Dear colleagues,

I have a question for chinese translators. We have two european computers with Windows 98 and Windows 2000 and they are not able to display chinese double byte characters properly. They just show some sort of square symbols every time we try to read any chinese page.
Can anyone tell me how to make these characters legible?. Is there a certain setting/font we need? If so, where can it be found?

Dear colleagues,

I have a question for chinese translators. We have two european computers with Windows 98 and Windows 2000 and they are not able to display chinese double byte characters properly. They just show some sort of square symbols every time we try to read any chinese page.
Can anyone tell me how to make these characters legible?. Is there a certain setting/font we need? If so, where can it be found?
Moreover, we would like to enter HTMS source code into a content management system (CMS). For this we will have to rename the file from *.html into *.TXT and to copy and paste the text of the source code into the CMS. Will there be any problem with the display of the characters? What does the source code usually look like? Here we get proper English text and strange symbols for the Chinese text. Does it matter in any way?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

Guadalupe.

Try installing the East Asian IMEs Sep 1, 2005

Windows 98 and Windows 2000 don't support the display of Chinese double-byte characters without add-ons. Try installing the Global IMEs from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ime/
This should install the necessary fonts.

Squares almost always means the characters in a desired font are not being accessed.

Have a look at:

If you want a web site to display both Chinese and Roman characters properly, it's probably best to use Unicode.

If the html code is in Unicode, there should be no problem pasting it into the html code of your CMS site if that is in Unicode too.

I am not sure with this, Sep 1, 2005

But I sugest you to search some Chinese Character processing software on the net and install it on your PC. It may works. And it should be easy to find this kind of free softwares on the internet.

Hope this helps.

Dear Guadalupe,

I posted a similar question in the forum. Maybe you can find some useful information here: http://www.proz.com/topic/31178.

Good luck,
Stefanie
