Dear all,
I have been asked to carry out a proofing job with PageMaker. I have now downloaded the software (version 7.01) but I am at a loss as what to do next. I have managed to open the file but I don't know how to edit stuff, the cursor has turned into an arrow and it won't let me overwrite anything. I am real newbie with this software, so I apologise for asking silly questions that may make the hair of an expert user stand on end!! Thanks for any tips you may be able to give me.... for proof-reading, insteading for lay-out. You can edit the text in the editor mode. Go to tab under options editor. You will have to open this everytime you have a new story in page maker. But if the text is a continuous or one document in one piece, you may not need to get into the editor mode. Best Brandis

Hi Frederica,
I am far from being a Pagemaker expert but have used it to make short presentations.
I guess you have to double clic on the part of the text you need to edit and then right clic and choose "change" to edit the text in a separate window.
Hope this will work!

The arrow tool is to select and move graphic elements, including text boxes.
The toolbar in Pagemaker looks like that:
You see the arrow is pressed. Simply click at the "T" beside the arrow, then click with the cursor within the text you want to edit. Pagemaker will now behave similar to Word.

I agree with Brandis. I have six years of experience with PageMaker due to my background in Journalism. In a press team, we'd usually take turns as page designer and text editor. Basically, whenever you're working with the text per se (not with the DTP aspect of it), you have to work on "editor mode". You'll see a continuous page with text only, as if you were working on Notepad, then you can edit it as you wish.

In my experience with PageMaker, it is easier to copy and paste the text onto MS Word to proofread and make changes. You can then choose to send it back on Word or PageMaker. PageMaker is a publishing program and it is difficult to work with specially if you don't have experience with the program

It's VERY DANGEROUS to copy and paste into Word... The formatting may be lost and you can really damage the whole design! If you really want to use Word because of the spell checker in a foreign language, do not edit the text into Word and then paste it back into PageMaker... Keep both windows open side by side and go changing the PageMaker text when you spot a mistake within Word.

Extracting text with Trados or other tool from PM to proofread it is not a good idea, as you may end with tons of TAGs, where reading the text will be very uncomfortable.
The best way is IMO to use the editor function in Pagemaker (even if I would prefer to stay in the layout modus) and the solution presented by Rafa Lombardino. If you take the text into Word, you can use the spellchecker in it. You can even paste text b... See more where it belongs, as Pagemaker is not a CAT tool.

Caution with the Text Editor (Story Editor, Editor brani in the Italian version), as you cannot readily see what impact any changes you make will have on the text flow and copyfitting.
I think that for this reason it is best to work in layout view instead.

You can run the spellchecker in PageMaker too, without having to copy/paste to Word, as long as the correct language had been applied to the text in the first place.
If corrections are minor and the layout is fairly simple, you shouldn't have any trouble. Otherwise you might experience text disappearing or ending up in unexpected places, due to the way the text flows.
