I am not sure what a technical term would be. I have always thought of it as a horse that was worked so hard, pushed so hard that it caused breathing problems (lung damage?). They always said it was permanent, that the symptoms would go away, but show up anytime the horse was worked.

: seriously, I disagreed with this earlier. Why would they be riding/using horses with serious respiratory conditions. This would give the equestrian centre/riders a terrible reputation for being cruel.

I don't think this means the horses have an illness "broken-winded", but rather they get out of breath

Thanks, Liz. I think you're closer to the right answer. This is not about horses on an equestrian center, though. I may have filled the question under a wrong categorie. It's a scene in an adventure novel set in Roman times. The horses are being chased by tribesmen and their dogs. The two heroes who ride them dismount at some point and hide. The horses keep running in terror, riderless, chased by the tribesmen. In their hiding place one of the heroes then says: "I can't stop thinking about those poor horses", and the other replies "they'll be OK, unless their wind is broken. These tribesmen don't kill horses." BUT he seems to imply that this "broken wind" will be their doom or will cause them to be permanently disabled. Earlier in the story when the heroes try to sell other horses, the man they're dealing with refuses to buy them because "their wind is broken". So, is it possible that after an excessive effort, an horse becomes in some way disabled, or chronically ill? |

I do not agree with you. This means the horses are out of breath. What would an equestrian centre be doing with horses with serious respiratory difficulties??
