Hi everybody!
I've just been sent several scanned documents to be translated from English into French. The agency estimated the number of source words. They asked me to estimate the number of target words (no word count possible because documents are scanned). Should I raise by ten per cent the number of words they estimated? Given the fact that I won't be able to use TRADOS, and that therefore, I will spend more time than usual on my translation, should I raise my rate? I just don'... See more
Hi everybody!
I've just been sent several scanned documents to be translated from English into French. The agency estimated the number of source words. Given the fact that I won't be able to use TRADOS, and that therefore, I will spend more time than usual on my translation, should I raise my rate? I just don't want to be too pushy. Thanks a lot in advance for your advice. ▲ Collapse

"Abby"?
You could transform the documents into Docs and count the words.
It's not perfect, but works.

Hi Alicia!
Actually, I knew I could do that but I just think it's not my job. I just thought there might exist an empiracal way of estimating rates. I told them I could do it if they accepted a higher rate but they did not. Never mind!

OCR it, or type it over

If the document contains a lot of repetition, it would be worthwhile to simply type it over, so you CAN use Trados. Depending on the volume, of course.
Others have mentioned OCR software, and that would do the trick too.

Hi!
There aren't many repetitions. The agency did not accept to raise my rate for this job anyway.
Thanks for your help.
