Nicole was a great contributor and I'm very sorry I missed meeting her in person in Berlin (I went off that afternoon to see the street and house where my SO's father had grown up).

Nicole's posts and following are a stirring example of what articulate writing can accomplish in reaching people and generating satisfying debate. I join many others who perceived her as a model, in my case I saw her as a model of the combination of specialization, collaboration, and creativity that is necessary for translation to paradoxically stand out and remain in the background, not perceived as "translation." Though it was a minor area for her, I will particularly remember her comments on "knowing your orthography," which came at a time when I felt as if I would go mad over German rules being applied to English. Nicole stiffened my resolve to resist "just going along," and I really appreciate it.

As fellow Oregonians, we did not take near enough time to
spend time on things other than work. I worked with Nicole
many times, and knew her on- and offline. I will always
remember her as a dear friend, colleague and professional
in the truest sense of the word.
Passion does not begin to describe it. She lived her work,
and she had standards and principles. Our profession has
lost one of its greats.

I opened ProZ after a few days and was shocked to hear this sad news!
Nicole's contributions were not always easy to read: she had a knack for pointing out one's mistakes and weaknesses, and that made her an excellent mentor.
I will remember her forever!

Was für ein Schock! Ich habe Nicole zwar nicht persönlich kennengelernt, aber all die Jahre war sie mir durchaus ein Begriff in der Übersetzerwelt.
Ich wünsche den Angehörigen ganz viel Kraft für die kommende Zeit. Sie war noch viel zu jung!

Dear Nicole, you will be sorely missed not only as a principled, passionate defender of translation quality and fairness in payment, or as a valued contributor to Proz, but as a human being who shared your deep knowledge and experience freely with your colleagues.
I had wondered why she hadn't been posting lately, now I learn the sad truth. What a great loss to our community. Best wishes and condolences to her family, friends and all who knew her.

Although I never got to meet her in person, I really enjoyed reading Nicole's witty, intelligent and informative forum and KudoZ posts. I learned so much from her, both when I was new to ProZ, but also in the years to follow.
