I wonder if any of you can advise me here. Although I used to translate (German-English), my work over the past few years has involved English-language copyediting. To date I've always charged either a per-word or a per-hour rate.
However, I've been asked recently by a prospective client (a publishing company) to provide a per-page rate. Do any of you work on this basis? And what is your system? Advantages? Disadvantages?

is about 1/3 of the rate for translating the same. However, before agreeing to this, I'd advise to take a look at the quality of text to be edited- happens it is easier to translate anew...

You don't indicate which country this client is in. Some countries have standard pages, defined in terms of a specific number of lines of a specific number of characters each. Some standard pages fit on multiple physical pages, depending on the type size, page size and margins. If they have a standard page, you should be able to do the arithmetic from your per-word rate.

The company is in India, and they work on the basis of 1600 characters to a page.
In any case, it's clear that I need to have more information from them, as well as to have a look at sample text.

Talking about definition of a “standard page” please bear in mind, some customers will say one page is 1600 characters without space-symbols (so they will use MS Word statistics and calculate the following: quantity of characters minus quantity of words (i.e. spaces) divided by 1600 equals one standard page). In this case you will get less. Quantity of standard pages very depends on language: there are some “long languages” (like Russian) and “short languages” (like English), so it is better to ask in advance what volume the customer wants to pay for – let us say for “long” original or for “short” translation et vice versa.

A lot of straight English copyeditors outside the world of translation charge by the page, but it's important to define what is meant by a page (in the English editing world, that's 250 words), and what is meant by editing (for which you can set out levels like light edit, medium edit, heavy edit, rewriting--I think the Editorial Freelance Association might have guidance on what those terms cover). If you do a lot of copyediting, you should have some rough idea what your editing pace is for diff... If you do a lot of copyediting, you should have some rough idea what your editing pace is for different degrees of difficulty, and you can calculate your per-page rate based on your target hourly rate.
There is a big range between the amount of time it takes to edit a page of well-written text by a native speaker and the amount of time it takes to edit a lousy translation, which is why I think some translators who also proofread/edit will always suggest an hourly rate for this type of work. But I think that may possibly be the result of not doing enough steady editing work to make a good time estimate for a particular class of editing. If you know that you can edit 12 pp/hr for a cleanish text and 3 pp/hr for a gastly one, it's not hard to set rates accordingly. ▲ Collapse
