Texto de origem - português VI. Sem a menor controvérsia ou contestação, pode muito bem ser feita uma pergunta, se esta doutrina concorda com a Confissão Belga e o Catecismo de Heidelberg como demonstrarei brevemente.
1. No 14 º artigo da Confissão Holandesa, temos estas expressões: “O homem consciente e voluntariamente sujeita-se o pecado, e, consequentemente, à morte e maldição, enquanto ele dá ouvidos às palavras enganadoras e impostoras do diabo”. A partir desta frase eu concluo que o homem não peca por conta de qualquer decreto ou Predestinação: cuja inferência é diametralmente oposta a doutrina da Predestinação, a qual eu contesto. Em seguida, no artigo l6, que trata de a Eleição Eterna de Deus, temos estas palavras: “Deus manifestou-se misericordioso, livrando da condenação, e salvando, aquelas pessoas que, em seu conselho eterno e imutável e segundo sua bondade desinteressada, ele escolheu em Cristo Jesus nosso Senhor, sem qualquer relação com as suas obras. E ele mostrou-se simplesmente, em deixar os outros em sua queda e perdição em que se haviam precipitado. "Não é claro para mim, como estas palavras são consistentes com esta doutrina da Predestinação.
2. Na questão 20 do Catecismo de Heidelberg, lemos:
"A salvação através de Cristo, não é dada [restaurada] para todos os que pereceram em Adão, mas apenas para aqueles que estão firmados em Cristo pela fé verdadeira, e que abraçam seus benefícios. “Desta frase deduzo que Deus não tem predestinou homem algum para a salvação; mas que ele tem em seu decreto considerado-os [ou encarado] como crentes. Esta dedução está abertamente em conflito com os primeiro e terceiro pontos deste Decreto. Na questão 54 do mesmo catecismo, diz: “Eu acredito que, desde o início até o fim do mundo, o Filho de Deus de toda a raça humana reúne por sua palavra e Espírito a obra escolhida para a vida eterna e acordar juntos na verdadeira fé.” Nesta frase “A eleição para a vida eterna”, e, “o acordo na fé”, ficam em justaposição mútua; e de tal maneira, que o último não se presta a subordinação ao primeiro que, o que de acordo com estes sentimentos sobre a Predestinação deveria ter sido feito. Nesse caso, as palavras deveriam ter sido colocadas na seguinte ordem: “O Filho de Deus chama e reúne para si mesmo, por sua palavra e Espírito Santo, a obra escolhida para a vida eterna, para que creiam e concordem juntos na verdadeira fé”.
Desde que tais são as declarações da nossa Confissão e Catecismo, não há razão para que, aqueles que abraçam e defendem estes sentimentos sobre predestinação, devam se esforçar para impô-los aos seus colegas ou à Igreja de Cristo; ou por que eles devam levar a mal, e colocar a pior interpretação sobre ela, quando nada é ensinado na Igreja ou universidade que não seja exatamente concordante com a sua doutrina, ou que se opõe a ela.
VII. Eu afirmo, que esta doutrina é repugnante para a natureza à Deus, mas especialmente para aqueles atributos de sua natureza através dos quais Ele atua e gerencia todas as coisas, a sua sabedoria, justiça e bondade.
1. É repugnante para a Sua sabedoria de três maneiras. (1) Porque apresenta um Deus que determina algo para um fim específico [ou propósito] que não é e nem pode ser bom: Que Deus criou algo para perdição eterna para o louvor de sua justiça. (2) Porque ela afirma, que o objeto que Deus propôs a si mesmo através dessa Predestinação, foi para demonstrar a glória da sua misericórdia e da sua justiça: Mas Ele não pode demonstrar tal glória a não ser por um ato que é ao mesmo tempo contrário à sua a misericórdia e à sua justiça, cuja descrição é o decreto de Deus, na qual ele determinou que o homem deve pecar e render-se miserável. (3) Porque ela muda e inverte a ordem da sabedoria dupla de Deus, como ela aparece nas Escrituras. Ela afirma, que Deus absolutamente predeterminou que os homens serão salvos pela misericórdia e sabedoria que estão inseridas na doutrina da Cruz de Cristo, sem prever esta circunstância, que era impossível para o homem (e isto na verdade, por sua própria culpa) para ser salvo pela sabedoria que a ele foi revelada na lei e que foi infundida nele no período de sua criação: Quando a Escritura afirma, pelo contrário, que “aprouve a Deus pela loucura da pregação salvar os crentes” , isto é, “pela doutrina da cruz, depois que, na sabedoria de Deus o mundo por sabedoria não conheceu a Deus.”(1 Coríntios. i, 21).
1. Ela é repugnante para a justiça de Deus, não só por referir-se a esse atributo que denota em Deus um amor de justiça e ódio de injustiça, mas também em referência a este desejo perpétuo e constante Nele para dar a cada um o que lhe é devido. (1) Ela está em desacordo com a primeira dessas ideias de justiça, da seguinte maneira : Porque ela afirma que Deus tem vontade de salvar certos indivíduos absolutamente, e decretou a sua salvação, sem fazer a menor relação com a justiça ou obediência: a inferência adequada a partir disso, é que Deus ama tais homens muito mais do que a sua própria justiça (2) ela se opõe à segunda ideia de sua justiça: Porque ela afirma, que Deus quer sujeitar a sua criatura à miséria de não poder ter qualquer existência, exceto pelo castigo do pecado, embora , ao mesmo tempo , Ele parece não considerar a criatura como um pecador, e, portanto, não obnóxio ou sujeito à ira ou a punição. Esta é a maneira pela qual ela estabelece a posição, de que Deus quis dar à criatura não somente algo que não pertence a ela, mas o que está relacionado com a sua maior lesão. O que é mais um ato diretamente oposto à sua justiça. De acordo, portanto, com esta doutrina, Deus, em primeiro lugar, retira de si mesmo algo que é seu, [ou seu direito] e , em seguida, dá à criatura algo que não pertence a ela , para sua miséria e infelicidade.
3. Também é repugnante para a Bondade de Deus. Bondade é uma afeição [ou disposição] em Deus para comunicar o seu próprio bem na medida em que a sua justiça considera e admite ser adequado e apropriado. Mas nesta doutrina o seguinte ato é atribuído a Deus, por si só, e nada do exterior o induz a isso, ele quer o maior mal para suas criaturas; e que desde toda a eternidade ele tem predeterminado o mal para eles, ou predeterminado para dar a eles, mesmo antes de resolver conceder-lhes qualquer parte do bem. Esta doutrina afirma que Deus quis condenar; e, para que pudesse ser capaz de fazer isso, ele quis criar; embora a criação é a primeira saída da bondade de Deus para com suas criaturas. Como é muito diferente o arco de tais declarações de que a bondade expansiva de Deus pela qual Ele confere benefícios não só sobre o indigno, mas também sobre o mau, a injustiça e sobre aqueles que são merecedores de punição, que traço de Beneficência Divina de nosso Pai QUE ESTÁ NO CÉU, somos conduzidos a imitar. (Mateus, V, 45).
VIII. Tal doutrina da Predestinação é contrária à natureza do homem, pelo ao fato do homem ter sido criado à imagem de Deus em conhecimento e na justiça - em relação ao fato de ter sido criado com a liberdade de escolha, e no que diz respeito a ter sido criado com uma disposição e aptidão para o gozo da vida eterna. Estas três circunstâncias, podem ser deduzidas a partir das breves expressões “Ora, Moisés escreveu que o homem que praticar a justiça decorrente da Lei viverá por ela” (Rom X, 5). “No dia em que tu comeres, certamente morrerás” (Gen II, 17). Se o homem pode ser privado de qualquer uma destas habilidades, essas advertências não podem, eventualmente, ser eficazes em tocá-lo à obediência.
1. Esta doutrina é inconsistente com a imagem divina, que consiste no conhecimento de Deus e da sua santidade. Pois de acordo conhecimento e sua justiça este homem foi qualificado e, ele também foi colocado sob a obrigação de conhecer a Deus, amar, adorar e servir a ele. Mas pela intervenção ou melhor por esta Predestinação, foi pré-ordenado que o homem deve ser perverso e deve cometer pecado, isto é, ele não deve nem conhecer a Deus, seu amor, sua adoração, nem servi-lo; e que ele não deve comportar-se por esta imagem de Deus, a qual ele estava bem qualificado e habilitado a fazer, e que ele estava prestes a realizar. Isto equivale a uma declaração como a seguinte, que qualquer um pode fazer: “Deus, sem dúvida, criou o homem a sua própria imagem, em verdadeira justiça e santidade; mas, não obstante disso, ele predeterminou e decretou que o homem deve tornar-se impuro e injusto, isto é, deve ser feito conforme a imagem de Satanás.”
Esta doutrina é incompatível com o livre arbítrio, no qual e com o qual o homem e foi criado por Deus. Porque ela prevê o exercício dessa liberdade, por ligação com a vontade absoluta a um objeto, isto é, para fazer uma coisa ou outra. Portanto Deus, de acordo com esta declaração, pode ser responsabilizado por uma ou outra dessas duas coisas, (as quais nenhum homem pode cobrar do seu Criador!) Ou para criar o homem com livre-arbítrio, ou para dificultar-lhe no uso de sua própria liberdade, depois de tê-lo criado livre. No primeiro destes dois casos, Deus é pode ser culpado por, no primeiro caso, consideração, neste último por mutabilidade e em ambos, com ser prejudicial ao homem, bem como a si mesmo.
3. Esta predestinação é prejudicial ao homem no que diz respeito à inclinação e capacidade para a fruição eterna da salvação, com a qual ele foi dotado no período de sua criação. Pois, uma vez que por esta predestinação, que a maior parte da humanidade não deve participar da salvação, mas sofrerá a condenação eterna, e uma vez que esta predeterminação ocorreu antes mesmo da criação do homem, tais pessoas são privadas de alguma coisa, pelo o desejo de que foram dotados por Deus como uma inclinação natural. Esta grande privação eles sofrem, não em consequência de qualquer pecado anterior ou demérito próprio, mas única e exclusivamente por causa deste tipo de predestinação.
IX. Esta predestinação é diametralmente oposta à do ato de criação.
1. A criação é uma comunicação de comum acordo com a propriedade intrínseca de sua natureza. Mas a criação dessa descrição, cuja intenção ou projeto é, para fazer um caminho próprio pelo qual a reprovação que havia sido determinado anteriormente poderá obter seu objeto, não é uma comunicação do bem. Por que devemos formar o nosso julgamento de todos os bens, da mente e da intenção Daquele que é o Doador, e desde o fim para o qual ou por conta de que algo é concedido. No presente caso, a intenção do doador teria sido, condenar que é um ato que não poderia afetar qualquer, exceto uma criatura; e o fim ou razão da criação teria sido a perdição eterna da criatura. Nessa fácil criação não teria havido uma transmissão de bem algum, mas uma preparação para o maior dos males, tanto de acordo com a própria intenção do Criador quanto a questão real da matéria; e de acordo com as palavras de Cristo: " Bom seria para esse homem, se ele nunca tivesse nascido! " (Mateus, XXVI, 24 ).
2. Reprovação é um ato de ódio e do ódio deriva a sua origem. Mas a criação não procede do ódio; não é, portanto, uma forma ou meio, a que pertence à execução do decreto da reprovação.
3. A criação é um ato perfeito de Deus, pelo qual ele tem manifestado sua sabedoria, bondade e da onipotência: Não é, portanto, subordinado ao final de qualquer outro trabalho anterior ou ação de Deus. Mas em vez de ser visto como o ato de Deus, que necessariamente precede e é antecedente a todos os demais atos que ele pode, eventualmente, decretar ou empreender. A menos que Deus tinha formado uma concepção anterior da obra da criação, ele não poderia ter decretado realmente ou do qualquer outro ato; e até que ele houvesse executado a obra da criação, ele não seria capaz de ter concluído qualquer outra operação.
4. Todas as ações de Deus, que tendem a condenação de suas criaturas, são o trabalho estranho a Ele; porque Deus consente a eles, por alguma outra causa que é bastante incomum. Mas a criação não é uma ação estranha a Deus, mas é adequada para ele. Ela é eminentemente uma ação mais apropriada para Ele, e para que Ele pudesse ser movido por nenhuma outra causa externa, porque é o primeiro de muitos dos atos divinos, e, até que fosse feito, nada poderia verdadeiramente existir, exceto o próprio Deus; por todos os demais que existem, passaram a existir através desta ação.
5. Se a criação é a forma através da qual Deus quis a execução do decreto de sua reprovação, ele estaria mais inclinado a querer o ato de reprovação do que o de criação; e ele, consequentemente, teria maior satisfação derivada do ato de condenar algumas de suas criaturas inocentes, do que no ato de sua criação.
6 . Por último. A criação não pode ser uma forma ou meio de reprovação de acordo com a finalidade absoluta de Deus, porque, depois da criação ser concluída, estava no poder do homem ainda permanecer obediente aos mandamentos divinos, e não cometer o pecado; para tornar isso possível, enquanto que Deus de uma lado concedeu-lhe força e poder suficiente, Ele também por outro lado colocou sobre os outros impedimentos suficientes; uma circunstância diametralmente oposta a predestinação aqui descrita.
X. Esta doutrina é a hostilmente contra a natureza da vida eterna, e os títulos pelos quais é simbolicamente distinta nas Escrituras. Por isso é chamado de “a herança dos filhos de Deus” (Tito III, 7), mas apenas aqueles são filhos de Deus, de acordo com a doutrina do Evangelho, “que acreditam no nome de Jesus Cristo.” (João I, 12) é também chamado de “a recompensa da obediência” (Mt, V, 12), e do “trabalho de amor”; (Hb VI, 10 ), “a recompensa daqueles que combatem o bom combate e que carregam corretamente a coroa da justiça”, & c. ( Rev. II , 10; . 2 Tim IV, 7, 8). Deus, portanto, não tem atribuiu a vida eterna, a partir de seu próprio decreto absoluto, por consideração ou respeito qualquer que seja a fé e obediência, nomeada para qualquer homem.
XI. Esta predestinação também se opõe à natureza da morte eterna, e aos denominações pelo qual é descrito nas Escrituras. Por isso é chamado de “o pagamento do pecado; (Rom. VI, 23, ) o castigo da destruição eterna , que será dado para os que não conhecem a Deus e que não obedecem ao Evangelho de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo; ( 2 Ts . 8, 9) o fogo eterno, preparado para o diabo e seus anjos, (Matt, XXV, 41 ), um fogo que consumirá os inimigos e adversários de Deus.”(Hb x , 27 ). Deus, portanto, não tem, por qualquer decreto absoluto, sem respeito ao pecado e desobediência, preparado a morte eterna para qualquer pessoa.
XII. Este Predestinação é incoerente com a natureza e propriedades do pecado, de duas maneiras: (1.) Porque o pecado é chamado de “desobediência” e “rebelião”, nenhum dos termos os quais podem possivelmente ser dos a qualquer pessoa que por um decreto divino anterior tenha sido colocado sob uma necessidade inevitável de pecar. (2.) Porque o pecado é a causa meritória de danação. Mas a causa meritória que move a vontade Divina para reprovar, está de acordo com a justiça; e induz a Deus, que tem aversão ao pecado, a querer a reprovação. O pecado, portanto, que é uma causa, não pode ser colocado entre os meios, pelos quais Deus executa o decreto ou vontade de reprovação.
XIII. Esta doutrina é igualmente repugnante à natureza da graça divina, e, tanto quanto o seu poder permitir, ela afeta a sua destruição. Sob qualquer pretexto especioso pode-se afirmar que “este tipo de predestinação é mais admiravelmente adaptada e muito necessário para o estabelecimento de da graça divina”, mas ela a destrói de três maneiras:
1. Porque a graça é abranda e mescla-se a natureza do homem, a não destruir dentro de si a liberdade da sua vontade, mas dá-lhe uma direção correta, para corrigir a sua depravação, e para permitir que o homem possua suas próprias noções adequadas. “Enquanto, pelo contrário, este Predestinação introduz uma tal espécie de graça, que tira o livre arbítrio e dificulta o seu exercício.
2. Porque as representações de graça que as Escrituras contêm, são descritas como “capaz de ser resisti-la, (Atos, VII, 51), e recebida em vão” (2 Coríntios. VI, 1) e que é possível para o homem, evitar ceder o seu assentimento a graça; e recusar toda a cooperação com ela. (Hb XII, 15; Matt, XXIII, 37; Lucas VII, 30) Embora, ao contrário, esta predestinação afirma, que a graça é uma força irresistível e operante.
3. Porque , de acordo com a principal intenção e projeto principal de Deus, a graça conduz ao bem das pessoas a quem é oferecida e por quem é recebida: enquanto, ao contrário, essa doutrina arrasta consigo a afirmação, que a graça é oferecida até mesmo para certos réprobos, e é até agora passada para eles para iluminar seu entendimento e para suscitar neles o gosto pelos dons celestiais, apenas para este fim e propósito, que, em proporção com a altura de que eles são elevados, o abismo em que eles são precipitados pode ser mais profundo, e sua queda mais pesada; e que eles podem tanto merecer quanto receber a maior perdição .
XIV. A doutrina da predestinação é prejudicial para a glória de Deus, porque não consiste em uma declaração de liberdade ou autoridade, nem de uma manifestação de raiva e de energia, a não ser a tal ponto que essa declaração e demonstração pode ser consistente com justiça, e com a perpetuação do nome, da honra e da bondade de Deus. Mas, de acordo com esta doutrina, segue-se que Deus é o autor do pecado, que pode ser provado por quatro argumentos:
1. Uma de suas posições é, que Deus absolutamente decretou a demonstrar a sua glória pela justiça punitiva e misericórdia, na salvação de alguns homens, e na condenação dos outros, o que não foi feito, nem poderia ter sido feito, a não ser que o pecado entrou no mundo.
2. Esta doutrina afirma que, a fim de obter seu objetivo, Deus ordenou que o homem deve cometer o pecado, para fazer uma justiça punitiva; e, a partir desta ordenação ou nomeação divina, se segue necessariamente queda do homem.
3. Ele afirma que Deus negou ao homem, ou retirou dele, tal parcela de graça suficiente e necessária para capacitá-lo a evitar o pecado, e que isso foi feito be ¬ tona homem pecou: o que é um ato que equivale à como se Deus tivesse prescrito um direito ao homem, que seria totalmente impossível para ele cumprir, se levássemos em consideração a natureza na qual ele havia sido criado.
4. E atribui a Deus certas obras no que diz respeito ao homem, tanto externa como internamente, tanto mediadas (por meio da intervenção de outras criaturas) e imediata – a obra divinas sendo uma vez admitida, o homem deve, necessariamente, cometer pecado, por que a necessidade que escolásticos chamam de “necessidade consequente que antecede a coisa em si”, e que destrói totalmente o livre arbítrio. Tal ato atribui a Deus, e representa-o como alguém que age intenção principal, sem qualquer conhecimento prévio de uma inclinação, vontade ou ação por parte do homem.
A partir dessas premissas, podemos deduzir, que Deus realmente peca. Porque, de acordo com esta doutrina, ele se move para o pecado por um ato que é inevitável, e segundo o seu próprio propósito e intenção primária, sem ter percebido qualquer indício anterior para tal ato da parte do homem.
A partir da mesma posição que pode também inferir que Deus é o único pecador. Para o homem, que é impelido por uma força irresistível de cometer o pecado, (isto é, para perpetrar algum ato que foi proibido), não pode ser dito para o pecado mesmo.
Como consequência legítima segue-se também, que o pecado não é pecado, pois qualquer que seja o que Deus faz, nem pode ser pecado, nem deveria qualquer de seus atos para receber essa denominação.
Além dos casos que já narrados, há um outra forma pela qual está doutrina inflige uma ferida profunda na honra de Deus - mas estes, é provável, que o que foi posto seja o suficiente.
XV. Esta doutrina é altamente desonrosa a Jesus Cristo, nosso Salvador. Pois, (1) O Exclui integralmente da doutrina da predestinação: e afirma que os homens foram predestinados para ser salvo, antes de Cristo foi predestinado para salvá-los; e, assim, ele argumenta, que ele não é o fundamento da escolha. (2 ). Nega, que Cristo é a causa meritória, que mais uma vez obtido para nós a salvação que tínhamos perdido, colocando-o como apenas uma causa secundária, pois a salvação que já tinha sido preordenada, e, portanto, só ele foi só um instrumento para nos dar a salvação. Este fato é evidente em congruência com o parecer que afirma: " que Deus tem absolutamente quis a salvação de certos homens, pelo primeiro e supremo decreto que ele passou, e em que todos os seus outros decretos dependem e são consequência. " Se isso for verdade, seria impossível a salvação de tais homens ter-se perdido, e, portanto, desnecessária para que possa ser reparado, e descobrir, que Jesus Cristo, que foi preordenado um Salvador para nós por si só.
XVI. Esta doutrina também é prejudicial para a salvação dos homens.
1. Porque ela impede a tristeza pelos pecados cometidos, o que não pode existir em quem não tem consciência do pecado. Mas é óbvio, que o homem que cometeu o pecado através da necessidade inevitável do decreto de Deus, não pode ter esse tipo de consciência do pecado. (2 Coríntios. VII, 10).
2. Porque ele remove toda a solicitude piedosa sobre ser convertidos do pecado para Deus. Pois ele não pode sentir nenhuma preocupação pois que é inteiramente passivo e se comporta como um homem morto, no que diz respeito não só ao seu discernimento e percepção da graça de Deus que é emocionante e o auxilia , mas também para o seu assentimento e obediência a ele; e que é convertida por um impulso tão irresistível , que ele não só não consegue evitar estar sensível da graça de Deus que bate dentro dele, mas também da necessidade deve ceder o seu assentimento a ele e, assim, converter-se a si mesmo. Tal pessoa, é evidente, não pode produzir dentro de seu coração ou conceber em sua mente esta solicitude, só que ela já sentiu o mesmo movimento irresistível. E se ela deve produzir dentro de seu coração qualquer preocupação, seria em vão e sem a menor vantagem. Porque não pode haver verdadeira solicitude, a qual não é produzida no coração por quaisquer outros meios, exceto por uma força irresistível de acordo com a finalidade absoluta e intenção de Deus para efetuar a sua salvação. (Rev. II, 3; III, 2)
3. Porque ele restringe, em pessoas que são convertidos, todo o zelo e respeito diligente para as boas obras, uma vez que declara “que o regenerado não pode executar mais ou menos bem do que eles fazem.” Pois aquele que é motivado ou impelido pela graça salvadora, tem que trabalhar e não pode interromper o seu trabalho; mas quem não é motivado pela mesma graça, não pode fazer nada, e considera que é necessário cessar todas as tentativas. (Tito III, 14).
4 . Porque ele extingue o zelo pela oração, que ainda é um meio eficaz instituído por Deus para pedir e obtenção de todos os tipos de bênçãos dele, mas, principalmente, a grande da salvação. (XI Lucas, 1-13). Mas a partir da circunstância de ter sido antes determinado por um decreto imutável e inevitável, que esta descrição de homens [os eleitos] deve obter a salvação, a oração não pode, por qualquer conta ser um meio para perguntar e obter a salvação. Só pode ser um modo de adorar a Deus; porque de acordo com o decreto absoluto de sua predestinação, ele determinou que esses homens devem ser salvos.
5 . Ele tira todo o medo mais salutar e tremor com que somos conduzidos a trabalhar a nossa própria salvação. (Phil, II, 12). Ele afirma “que quem é eleito e não pode pecar com a disposição plena e total com que o pecado é cometido por ímpios; e que não pode cair totalmente ou finalmente longe da fé ou da graça.”
6. Porque ele produz dentro de homens um tamanho desespero formado por aquilo que o seu dever exige e para o que seus desejos são direcionados. XVII. Esta predestinação é em abertamente contra o ministério do evangelho.

Tradução - inglês VI. Without the least contention or cavilling, it may very properly be made a question of doubt, whether this doctrine agrees with the Belgic Confession and the Heidelberg Cate¬chism; as I shall briefly demonstrate.
1. In the 14th Article of the Dutch Confession, these expressions occur: “Man knowingly and willingly subjected him¬self to sin, and, consequently, to death and cursing, while he lent an ear to the deceiving words and impostures of the devil,” &c. From this sentence I conclude, that man did not sin on account of any necessity through a preceding decree of Pre¬destination: which inference is diametrically opposed to that doctrine of Predestination against which I now contend Then, in the l6th Article, which treats of the eternal election of God, these words are contained: “God shewed himself MERCIFUL, by delivering from damnation, and by saving, those persons whom, in his eternal and immutable counsel and ac¬cording to his gratuitous goodness, he chose in Christ Jesus our Lord, without any regard to their works. And he shewed himself JUST, in leaving others in that their fall and perdition into which they had precipitated themselves.” It is not obvi¬ous to me, how these words are consistent with this doctrine of Predestination.
2. In the 20th question of the Heidelberg Catechism, we read:
“Salvation through Christ is not given [restored] to all them who had perished in Adam, but to those only who are engrafted into Christ by true faith, and who embrace his benefits.” From this sentence I infer, that God has not abso¬lutely predestinated any men to salvation; but that he has in his decree considered [or looked upon] them as believers. This deduction is at open conflict with the first and third points of this Predestination. In the 54th question of the same Cat¬echism, it is said: “I believe that, from the beginning to the end of the world, the Son of God out of the entire race of man¬kind doth by his word and Spirit gather or collect unto him¬self a company chosen unto eternal life and agreeing together in the true faith.” In this sentence “election to eternal life,” and, agreement in the faith,” stand in mutual juxtaposition; and in such a manner, that the latter is not rendered subordi¬nate to the former, which, according to these sentiments on Predestination ought to have been done. In that case the words should have been placed in the following order: “The Son of God calls and gathers to himself, by his word and Spirit, a company chosen to eternal life, that they may believe and agree together in the true faith”.
Since such are the statements of our Confession and Cate¬chism, no reason whatever exists, why those who embrace and defend these sentiments on Predestination, should either vio¬lently endeavor to obtrude them on their colleagues and on the Church of Christ; or why they should take it amiss, and put the worst construction upon it, when any thing is taught in the Church or University that is not exactly accordant with their doctrine, or that is opposed to it.
VII. I affirm, that this doctrine is repugnant to the NATURE or GOD, but particularly to those ATTRIBUTES of his nature by which he performs and manages all things, his wisdom, justice, and goodness.
1. It is repugnant to his WISDOM in three ways. (1.) Be¬ cause it represents God as decreeing something for a particu¬lar end [or purpose] which neither is nor can be good: Which is, that God created something for eternal perdition to the praise of his justice. (2.) Because it states, that the object which God proposed to himself by this Predestination, was, to demonstrate the glory of his mercy and justice: But this glory he cannot demonstrate, except by an act that is contrary at once to his mercy and his justice, of which description is that decree of God in which he determined that man should sin and be rendered miserable. (3.) Because it changes and inverts the order of the two-fold wisdom of God, as it is dis-played to us in the Scriptures. For it asserts, that God has absolutely predetermined to save men by the mercy and wis¬dom that are comprehended in the doctrine of the cross of Christ, without having foreseen this circumstance, that it was impossible for man (and that, truly, through his own fault,) to be saved by the wisdom which was revealed in the law and which was infused into him at the period of his creation: When the scripture asserts, on the contrary, that “it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe that is, “ by the doctrine of the cross, after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God.” (1 Cor. i, 21.)
1. It is repugnant to the JUSTICE of God, not only in refer¬ence to that attribute denoting in God a love of righteousness and a hatred of iniquity, but also in reference to its being a perpetual and constant desire in Him to render to every one that which is his due. (1.) It is at variance with the first of these ideas of justice in the following manner: Because it affirms, that God has absolutely willed to save certain indi¬vidual men, and has decreed their salvation without having the least regard to righteousness or obedience: The proper inference from which, is, that God loves such men far more than his own justice [or righteousness.] (2.) It is opposed to the second idea of his justice: Because it affirms, that God wishes to subject his creature to misery which cannot possibly have any existence except as the punishment of sin,) although, at the same time, he does not look upon [or consider] the creature as a sinner, and therefore as not obnoxious either to wrath or to punishment. This is the manner in which it lays down the position, that God has willed to give to the creature not only something which does not belong to it, but which is connected with its greatest injury. Which is another act directly opposed to his justice. In accordance, therefore, with this doctrine, God, in the first place, detracts from him¬self that which is his own, [or his right,] and then imparts to the creature what does not belong to it, to its great misery and unhappiness.
3. It is also repugnant to the GODNESS of God. Goodness is an affection [or disposition] in God to communicate his own good so far as his justice considers and admits to be fitting and proper. But in this doctrine the following act is attribu¬ted to God, that, of himself, and induced to it by nothing external, he wills the greatest evil to his creatures; and that from all eternity he has pre-ordained that evil for them, or pre-determined to impart it to them, even before he resolved to bestow upon them any portion of good. For this doctrine states, that God willed to damn; and, that he might be able to do this, he willed to create; although creation is the first egress [or going forth] of God’s goodness towards his creatures. How vastly different arc such statements as these from that expansive goodness of God by which he confers benefits not only on the unworthy, but also on the evil, the unjust and on those who are deserving of punishment, which trait of Divine Beneficence in OUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN, we are commanded to imitate. (Matt, v, 45.)
VIII. Such a doctrine of Predestination is contrary to the nature of man, in regard to his having been created after the Divine image in the knowledge of God and in righteousness ‒ in regard to his having been created with freedom of will, and in regard to his having been created with a disposition and aptitude for the enjoyment of life eternal. These three circumstances respecting him, may be deduced from the fol¬lowing brief expressions: “Do this, and lire:” (Rom. x, 5.) “In the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die.” (Gen. ii, 17.) If man be deprived of any of these qualifica¬tions, such admonitions as these cannot possibly be effective in exciting him to obedience.
1. This doctrine is inconsistent with the Divine image, which consists of the knowledge of God and holiness. For according to this knowledge and righteousness man was qualified and empowered, he was also laid under an obligation to know God, to love, worship, and serve him. But by the intervention, or rather by the prevention, of this Predestination, it was pre¬ordained that man should be formed vicious and should com¬mit sin, that is, that he should neither know God, love, worship, nor serve him; and that he should not perform that which by this image of God, he was well qualified and empowered to do, and which he was bound to perform. This is tantamount to such a declaration as the following, which any one might make: “God did undoubtedly create man after his own image, in righteousness and true holiness; but, notwithstand¬ing this, he fore-ordained and decreed, that man should become impure and unrighteous, that is, should be made conformable to the image of Satan.”
2. This doctrine is inconsistent with the freedom of the will, in which and with which man was created by God. For it prevents the exercise of this liberty, by binding or determin¬ing the will absolutely to one object, that is, to do this thing precisely, or to do that. God, therefore, according to this statement, may be blamed for the one or the other of these two things, (with which let no man charge his Maker !) either for creating man with freedom of will, or for hindering him in the use of his own liberty after he had formed him a free agent. In the former of these two cases, God is chargeable with a want of consideration, in the latter with mutability and in both, with being injurious to man as well as to himself.
3. This predestination is prejudicial to man in regard to the inclination and capacity for the eternal fruition of salvation, with which he was endowed at the period of his creation. For, since by this predestination it has been pre-determined, that the greater part of mankind shall not be made partakers of salvation, but shall full into everlasting condemnation, and since this predetermination took place even before the decree had passed for creating man, such persons are deprived of something, for the desire of which they have been endowed by God with a natural inclination. This great privation they suffer, not in consequence of any preceding sin or demerit of their own, but simply and solely through this sort of predes¬tination.
IX. This Predestination is diametrically opposed to THE ACT OF CREATION.
1. For creation is a communication of good according to the intrinsic property of its nature. But a creation of this description, whose intent or design is, to make a way through itself by which the reprobation that had been previously determined may obtain its object, is not a communication of good. For we ought to form our estimate and judgment of every good, from the mind and intention of Him who is the Donor, and from the end to which or on account of which it is bestowed. In the present instance, the intention of the Donor would have been, to condemn, which is an act that could not possibly affect any one except a creature; and the end or event of creation would have been the eternal perdition of the creature. In that ease creation would not have been a com¬munication of any good, but a preparation for the greatest evil both according to the very intention of the Creator and the actual issue of the matter; and according to the words of Christ, “It had been good for that man, if he had never been born!” (Matt, xxvi, 24.)
2. Reprobation is an act of hatred, and from hatred derives its origin. But creation does not proceed from hatred; it is not therefore a way or means, which belongs to the execution of the decree of reprobation.
3. Creation is a perfect act of God, by which he has mani¬fested his wisdom, goodness and omnipotence: It is not therefore subordinate to the end of any other preceding work or action of God. But it is rather to be viewed as that act of God, which necessarily precedes and is antecedent to all other acts that he can possibly either decree or undertake. Unless God had formed a previous conception of the work of crea¬tion, he could not have decreed actually to undertake any other act; and until he had executed the work of creation, he could by no means have completed any other operation.
4. All the actions of God which tend to the condemnation of his creatures, are strange work or foreign to him; because God consents to them, for some other cause that is quite ex¬traneous. But creation is not an action that is foreign to God, but it is proper to Him. It is eminently an action most appropriate to Him, and to which he could be moved by no other external cause, because it is the very first of the Divine acts, and, till it was done, nothing could have any actual existence, except God himself; for every thing else that has a being, came into existence through this action.
5. If creation be the way and means through which God willed the execution of the decree of his reprobation, he was more inclined to will the act of reprobation than that of crea¬tion; and he consequently derived greater satisfaction from the act of condemning certain of his innocent creatures, than in the act of their creation.
6. Lastly. Creation cannot be a way or means of reproba¬tion according to the absolute purpose of God: because, after the creation was completed, it was in the power of man still to have remained obedient to the Divine commands, and not to commit sin; to render this possible, while God had on one part bestowed on him sufficient strength and power, He had also on the other placed sufficient impediments; a circum¬stance most diametrically opposed to a predestination of this description.
X. This doctrine is at open hostility with THE NATURE OF ETERNAL LIFE, and the titles by which it is signally distin¬guished in the Scriptures. For it is called “the inheritance of the sons of God;” (Tit. iii, 7,) but those alone are the sons of God, according to the doctrine of the Gospel, “who believe in the name of Jesus Christ.” (John i, 12.) It is also called, “the reward of obedience,” (Matt, v, 12,) and of “the labor of love;” (Heb. vi, 10,) “the recompense of those who fight the good fight and who run well, a crown of righteous¬ness,” &c. (Rev. ii, 10; 2 Tim. iv, 7, 8.) God therefore has not, from his own absolute decree, without any consideration or regard whatever to faith and obedience, appointed to any man, or determined to appoint to him, life eternal.
XI. This Predestination is also opposed to THE NATURE OF ETERNAL DEATH, and to those appellations by which it is described in, Scripture. For it is called “the wages of sin; (Rom. vi, 23,) the punishment of everlasting destruction, which shall be recompensed to them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ; (2 Thess. 8, 9,) the everlasting fire prepared for the Devil and his angels, (Matt, xxv, 41,) a fire which shall devour the enemies and adversaries of God.” (Heb. x, 27.) God, therefore, has not, by any absolute decree without respect to sin and diso¬bedience, prepared eternal death for any person.
XII. This Predestination is inconsistent with THE NATURE AND PROPERTIES OF SIN, in two ways: (1.) Because sin is called “disobedience” and “rebellion,” neither of which terms can possibly apply to any person who by a preceding Divine decree is placed under an unavoidable necessity of sinning. (2.) Because sin is the meritorious cause of damna¬tion. But the meritorious cause which moves the Divine will to reprobate, is according to justice; and it induces God, who holds sin in abhorrence, to will reprobation. Sin, therefore, which is a cause, cannot be placed among the means, by which God executes the decree or will of reprobation.
XIII. This Doctrine is likewise repugnant to THE NATURE OF DIVINE GRACE, and, as far as its powers permit, it effects its destruction. Under whatever specious pretenses it may be asserted, that “this kind of predestination is most admirably adapted and quite necessary for the establishment of grace,” yet it destroys it in three ways:
1. Because grace is so attempered and commingled with the nature of man, as not to destroy within him the liberty of his will, but to give it a right direction, to correct its depravity, and to allow man to possess his own proper notions. 'While, on the contrary, this Predestination introduces such a species of grace, as takes away free will and hinders its exercise.
2. Because the representations of grace which the Scrip¬tures contain, are such as describe it capable of “being resist¬ed, (Acts, vii, 51,) and received in vain” (2 Cor. vi, 1,) and that it is possible for man to avoid yielding his assent to it; and to refuse all co-operation with it. (Heb. xii, 15; Matt, xxiii, 37; Luke vii, 30.) While, on the contrary, this predes-tination affirms, that grace is a certain irresistible force and operation.
3. Because, according to the primary intention and chief design of God, grace conduces to the good of those persons to whom it is offered and by whom it is received: While, on the contrary, this doctrine drags along with it the assertion, that grace is offered even to certain reprobates, and is so far com¬municated to them as to illuminate their understandings and to excite within them a taste for the heavenly gifts, only for this end and purpose, that, in proportion to the height to which they are elevated, the abyss into which they are pre¬cipitated may be the deeper, and their fall the heavier; and that they may both merit and receive the greater perdition.
XIV. The doctrine of this predestination is INJURIOUS TO THE GLORY OF GOD, which does not consist of a declaration of liberty or authority, nor of a demonstration of anger and power, except to such an extent as that declaration and dem¬onstration may be consistent with justice, and with a perpet¬ual reservation in behalf of the honor of God’s goodness. But, according to this doctrine, it follows that GOD IS THE AU¬THOR OF SIN, which may be proved by four arguments:
1. One of its positions is, that God has absolutely decreed to demonstrate his glory by punitive justice and mercy, in the salvation of some men, and in the damnation of others, which neither was done, nor could have possibly been done, unless sin had entered into the world.
2. This doctrine affirms, that, in order to obtain his object, God ordained that man should commit sin, and be rendered vitiated; and, from this Divine ordination or appointment, the fall of man necessarily followed.
3. It asserts that God has denied to man, or has withdrawn from him, such a portion of grace as is sufficient and neces¬sary to enable him to avoid sin, and that this was done be¬fore man had sinned: which is an act that amounts to the same as if God had prescribed a law to man, which it would be utterly impossible for him to fulfill, when the nature in which he had been created was taken into consideration.
4. It ascribes to God certain operations with regard to man, both external and internal, both mediate (by means of the intervention of other creatures) and immediate ‒ which divine operations being once admitted, man must necessarily commit sin, by that necessity which the schoolmen call “a consequen¬tial necessity antecedent to the thing itself,” and which totally destroys the freedom of the will. Such an act does this doc¬trine attribute to God, and represents it to proceed from his primary and chief intention, without any foreknowledge of an inclination, will, or action on the part of man.
From these premises, we deduce, as a further conclusion, that God really sins. Because, according to this doctrine, he moves to sin by an act that is unavoidable, and according to his own purpose and primary intention, without having re-ceived any previous inducement to such an act from any pre¬ceding sin or demerit in man.
From the same position we might also infer, that God is the only sinner. For man, who is impelled by an irresistible force to commit sin, (that is, to perpetrate some deed that has been prohibited,) cannot be said to sin himself.
As a legitimate consequence it also follows, that sin is not sin, since whatever that be which God does, it neither can be sin, nor ought any of his acts to receive that appellation.
Besides the instances which I have already recounted, there is another method by which this doctrine inflicts a deep wound on the honor of God ‒ but these, it is probable, will be con¬sidered at present to be amply sufficient.
XV. This doctrine is highly DISHONORABLE TO JESUS CHRIST our Savior. For, (1.) it entirely excludes him from that de¬cree of predestination which predestinates the end: and it affirms, that men were predestinated to be saved, before Christ was predestinated to save them; and thus it argues, that he is not the foundation of election. (2.) It denies, that Christ is the meritorious cause, that again obtained for us the salvation which we had lost, by placing him as only a subor¬dinate cause of that salvation which had been already fore-ordained, and thus only a minister and instrument to apply that salvation unto us. This indeed is in evident congruity with the opinion which states “that God has absolutely willed the salvation of certain men, by the first and supreme decree which he passed, and on which all his other decrees depend and are consequent.” If this be true, it was therefore impos¬sible for the salvation of such men to have been lost, and therefore unnecessary for it to be repaired and in some sort regained afresh, and discovered, by the merit of Christ, who was fore-ordained a Savior for them alone.
XVI. This doctrine is also HURTFUL TO THE SALVATION OF MEN.
1. Because it prevents that saving and godly sorrow for sins that have been committed, which cannot exist in those who have no consciousness of sin. But it is obvious, that the man who has committed sin through the unavoidable necessity of the decree of God, cannot possibly have this kind of conscious¬ness of sin. (2 Cor. vii, 10.)
2. Because it removes all pious solicitude about being con¬verted from sin unto God. For he can feel no such concern who is entirely passive and conducts himself like a dead man, with respect not only to his discernment and perception of the grace of God that is exciting and assisting, but also to his assent and obedience to it; and who is converted by such an irresistible impulse, that he not only cannot avoid being sen¬sible of the grace of God which knocks within him, but he must likewise of necessity yield his assent to it, and thus con¬vert himself, or rather be converted. Such a person it is evident, cannot produce within his heart or conceive in his mind this solicitude, except he have previously felt the same irresistible motion. And if he should produce within his heart any such concern, it would be in vain and without the least advantage. For that cannot be a true solicitude, which is not produced in the heart by any other means except by an irresistible force according to the absolute purpose and inten¬tion of God to effect his salvation. (Rev. ii, 3; iii, 2.)
3. Because it restrains, in persons that are converted, all zeal and studious regard for good works, since it declares “ that the regenerate cannot perform either more or less good than they do.” For he that is actuated or impelled by saving grace, must work, and cannot discontinue his labor; but he that is not actuated by the same grace, can do nothing, and finds it necessary to cease from all attempts. (Tit. iii, 14.)
4. Because it extinguishes the zeal for prayer, which yet is an efficacious means instituted by God for asking and obtain¬ing all kinds of blessings from him, but principally the great one of salvation. (Luke xi, 1-13.) But from the circum-stance of it having been before determined by an immutable and inevitable decree, that this description of men [the elect] should obtain salvation, prayer cannot on any account be a means for asking and obtaining that salvation. It can only be a mode of worshiping God; because according to the absolute decree of his predestination he has determined that such men shall be saved.
5. It takes away all that most salutary fear and trembling with which we are commanded to work out our own salvation. (Phil, ii, 12.) For it states “ that he who is elected and be¬lieves, cannot siu with that full and entire willingness with which sin is committed by the ungodly; and that they cannot either totally or finally fall away from faith or grace.”
6. Because it produces within men a despair both of per¬forming that which their duty requires and of obtaining that towards which their desires are directed. For when they are taught that the grace of God (which is really necessary to the performance of the least portion of good) is denied to the ma-jority of mankind, according to an absolute and peremptory decree of God ‒ and that such grace is denied because, by a preceding decree equally absolute, God has determined not to confer salvation on them but damnation; when they are thus taught, it is scarcely possible for any other result to ensue, than that the individual who cannot even with great difficulty work a persuasion within himself of his being elected, should soon consider himself included in the number of the reprobate. From such an apprehension as this, must arise a certain des¬pair of performing righteousness and obtaining salvation.
XVII. This doctrine INVERTS THE ORDER OF THE GOSPEL of Jesus Christ. For in the gospel God requires repentance and faith on the part of man, by promising to him life ever¬lasting, if he consent to become a convert and a believer. (Mark i, 15; xvi, 16.) But it is stated in this [Supralapsarian] decree of Predestination, that it is God’s absolute will, to bestow salvation on certain particular men, and that lie willed at the same time absolutely to give those very individuals repentance and faith, by means of an irresitible force, because it was his will and pleasure to save them. In the gospel, God denounces eternal death on the impenitent and unbelieving. (John iii. 36.) and those threats contribute to the purpose which he has in view, that he may by such means deter them from unbelief and thus may save them. But by this decree of Predestination it is taught, that God wills not to confer on cer¬tain individual men that grace which is necessary for conversion and faith because he has absolutely decreed their condemnation. The Gospel says, “God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believeth in him should have everlasting life.” (John iii, 10.) But this doctrine declares; “ that God so loved those whom he had absolutely elected to eternal life, as to give his Son to them alone, and by an irresistible force to produce within them faith on him.” To embrace the whole in few words, the gospel says, “Fulfill the command, and thou shalt obtain the promise; believe, and thou shalt live.” But this [Supralapsarian] doctrine says, “Since it is my will to give thee life, it is therefore my will to give thee faith which is a real and most manifest inversion of the gospel.
XVII. This Predestination is in open hostility to THE MINISTRY OF THE GOSPEL.
1. For if God by an irresistible power quicken him who is dead in trespasses and sins, no man can be a minister and “a laborer together with God,” (1 Cor. iii, 9,) nor can the word preached by man be the instrument of grace and of the Spirit, any more than a creature could have been an instrument of grace in the first creation, or a dispenser of that grace in the resurrection of the body from the dead.
2. Because by this Predestination the ministry of the gos¬pel is made “the savor of death unto death” in the case of the majority of those who hear it, (2 Cor. ii, 14-16,) as well as an instrument of condemnation, according to the primary design and absolute intention of God, without any considera¬tion of previous rebellion.
3. Because, according to this doctrine, Baptism, when administered to many reprobate children, (who yet are the offspring of parents that believe and are God’s covenant peo¬ple,) is evidently a seal [or ratification] of nothing, and thus becomes entirely useless, in accordance with the primary and absolute intention of God, without any fault [or culpability] on the part of the infants themselves, to whom it is administered in obedience to the divine command.
4. Because it hinders public prayers from being offered to God in a becoming and suitable manner, that is, with faith, and in confidence that they will be profitable to all the hearers of the word; when there are many among them, whom God is not only unwilling to save, but whom by his absolute, eternal, and immutable will, (which is antecedent to all things and causes whatever,) it is his will and pleasure to damn: In the mean time, when the Apostle commands PRAYERS and SUPPLICATIONS to be made FOR ALL MEN, he adds this reason, “for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; who will have ALL MEN to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim. ii, 1-4.)

I have bachelor and master degree in psychology but I've been working for about 9 years in HR management. I have a passion for technology so in the last 6 years I became IT Consultant for systems for HR management, which I like very much and gave me a lot of experience in project management. A lot experience of proactive recruitment and with management tools. As I had always worked in medium to big companies I'm used to work in a fast moving, developing environments. I have excellent written and spoken communication skills in English. I am a fast learner and very positive person and I'd really like an opportunity to have an interview at your company. During the years I have done some translations not professionaly but I 'd like to try this profession as I am becoming more fluent in English.
