Texto de origem - português O milho (Zea mays) é um dos principais cereais cultivados no mundo, fornecendo produtos para alimentação humana e animal e matéria-prima para a indústria. No Brasil, a cultura ocupa posição significativa na economia, em decorrência do valor da produção agropecuária, da área cultivada e do volume produzido, especialmente nas regiões Sul, Sudeste e Centro-Oeste (Glat, 2002). Mesmo apresentando altos índices de produtividade em algumas lavouras que adotam maior nível tecnológico, a cultura está sujeita a fatores bióticos e abióticos que interferem na sua produtividade final. Entre os fatores bióticos, destaca-se a interferência das plantas daninhas - reflexo tanto da ausência quanto da ineficiência do controle.
As perdas na produtividade do milho ocasionadas pela interferência das plantas daninhas podem atingir níveis elevados. Dependendo do tempo e da intensidade de convivência, os efeitos da interferência são irreversíveis, não havendo recuperação do desenvolvimento ou da produtividade da cultura após a retirada do estresse causado pela presença das plantas daninhas (Kozlowski, 2002). A redução da produtividade do milho devido à interferência estabelecida pelas plantas daninhas pode variar entre 10 e 90% (Wilson & Westra, 1991; Spader & Vidal, 2000b; Harrison et al., 2001; Massinga et al., 2001; Hellwig et al., 2002; Kozlowski, 2002; Cathcart & Swanton, 2004; Alford et al., 2005; Cox et al., 2006; Williams, 2006), dependendo do grau de interferência, que é dependente de fatores ligados à cultura, à comunidade infestante e ao ambiente, e da época e duração do período de convivência entre a planta daninha e a cultura (Pitelli, 1985).
Com relação à época e duração da convivência entre cultura e plantas daninhas, Pitelli & Durigan (1984) definiram o período anterior à interferência (PAI), o período total de prevenção da interferência (PTPI) e o período crítico de prevenção da interferência (PCPI). O PCPI caracteriza-se pelo período durante o qual é imprescindível realizar o controle das plantas daninhas. Dessa forma, em termos de manejo de plantas daninhas, o PAI torna-se o período de maior importância do ciclo cultural, a partir do qual a produtividade é significativamente prejudicada. Este período define o período ideal para o controle das plantas daninhas em pós-emergência, pois, além de não alterar a produtividade, as plantas daninhas teriam mobilizado uma quantidade de nutrientes que seriam gradativamente devolvidos ao sistema e colocados à disposição da cultura, além dos benefícios da cobertura morta (Pitelli, 1985). No entanto, o conhecimento deste período sempre teve uma conotação teórica, pois muitas vezes o seu final era posterior à época ideal de aplicação do herbicida em pós-emergência para controle das plantas daninhas ou da fase em que este não provocava efeitos de fitointoxicação na planta cultivada.
Recentemente, com a introdução das culturas geneticamente modificadas para tolerância aos herbicidas não seletivos e sem ação residual no solo, como o glyphosate, pela primeira vez no controle químico a extensão do PAI poderá ser explorada em áreas em que a comunidade infestante não apresente espécies de difícil controle para o produto utilizado em fase mais avançada do ciclo de desenvolvimento. Com as grandes infestações de plantas daninhas que ocorrem em algumas regiões do Brasil, os valores do PAI são baixos e o controle deve ser realizado numa fase bastante precoce do ciclo da cultura. Nesse sentido, o uso de herbicidas sem efeito residual permite que a comunidade infestante, após um novo fluxo de emergência, se reinstale imediatamente após o controle anterior. Dependendo da densidade do mato, da intensidade de crescimento das populações de plantas daninhas e das condições do sombreamento promovidas pela cultura, o crescimento da comunidade infestante poderá ser intenso a ponto de interferir na produtividade da cultura e produzir um segundo PAI, chamado de período anterior à interferência subsequente (PAI-S), sendo este o período desde o controle das plantas daninhas até o momento em que a nova comunidade infestante (reinfestação) passa a interferir na produtividade da cultura (Pitelli, 2006).
A definição das situações em que haverá o PAI-S e em quais delas este período será precoce ou tardio no restante do ciclo da cultura é fundamental para o planejamento do número e épocas de aplicação de herbicidas não seletivos à cultura e sem ação residual ou do estabelecimento de combinações de produtos ou estratégias de manejo. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de diferentes épocas e extensões dos períodos de convivência das plantas daninhas interferindo na produtividade da cultura do milho.
Tradução - inglês Maize (Zea mays) is one of the world’s most important cultivated cereal crops, providing food products for humans and animals, and raw materials for industry. Crop production occupies a significant position in the Brazilian economy, in terms of the value of agricultural production, the area of agricultural land cultivated and the crop volume produced, especially in the South, Southeast and Central-West regions (Glat, 2002). Despite there being high yield levels in some farms that use more advanced levels of technology, crop production is subject to biotic and abiotic factors that interfere with its final yield. The most notable biotic factor is weed interference, which is a reflection on both the absence and the inefficiency of weed control.
Losses of maize yield resulting from weed interference can reach high levels. Depending on the time and intensity of coexistence, the effects of weed interference are irreversible, as there is no recovery of crop development or yield after the stress caused by the presence of weeds has been removed (Kozlowski, 2002). Weed interference can cause reductions of maize yield that vary between 10 per cent and 90 per cent, depending on the degree of interference (Wilson & Westra, 1991; Spader & Vidal, 2000b; Harrison et al., 2001; Massinga et al., 2001; Hellwig et al., 2002; Kozlowski, 2002; Cathcart & Swanton, 2004; Alford et al., 2005; Cox et al., 2006; Williams, 2006). The degree of interference is determined by factors relating to the nature of the crop production system used, the weed community present, the environment and the time and duration of weed-crop coexistence at a particular site (Pitelli, 1985).
Pitelli and Durigan (1984) discussed the time and duration of weed-crop coexistence in terms of the ‘period prior to interference’ (PPI), the ‘total period of interference prevention’ (TPIP), and the ‘critical period of interference prevention’ (CPIP). CPIP refers to the period during which it is absolutely essential to carry out weed control. Thus, the PPI becomes the most important period in the crop cycle for weed management, as it is from this period onwards that the most significant damage to yield is caused. This is the ideal period for post-emergence weed control, because during this time, not only do weeds lack the capacity to alter the yield, but they will also have mobilised a quantity of nutrients, which will gradually be returned to the system and made available to the crop, adding to nutrition that has already been made available through mulching (Pitelli, 1985). However, knowledge of this period has always had theoretical connotations, because the PPI often ends after the ideal time for applying post-emergence herbicide for weed control, or after the phase in which it is safe to apply post-emergence herbicide without producing phytotoxic effects on the crop plant.
It has recently become possible, for the first time in the history of chemical weed control, to explore the extension of the PPI in sites where the weed community does not include species that are difficult for the product to control during the most advanced stage of the development cycle. This is due to the introduction of crops that have been genetically modified to be tolerant to non-selective herbicides with no soil residual activity, such as glyphosate. In some regions of Brazil, where large infestations of weeds occur, the PPI is short and weed control must be carried out in a relatively early stage of the crop cycle. This early usage of non-residual herbicides allows a new flush of weeds to emerge and become re-established immediately following the prior weed control. Given a certain intensity of weed population growth and certain weed density and crop shade conditions, the weed community growth can become so intense that it begins to interfere in the crop yield and produce a second PPI, known as the ‘period prior to subsequent interference’ (PPSI). This period begins with initial weed control and ends when the new weed community (reinfestation) begins to interfere with the crop yield (Pitelli, 2006).
Defining in which situations a PPSI will occur and whether it will occur early or late in terms of the rest of the crop cycle in a particular situation, is fundamental for planning the number and times of non-selective, non-residual herbicide application or for guiding decisions about the most appropriate product combinations or management strategies to use. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of different times and extensions of the coexistence periods of weeds interfering with maize crop yield.

Aprova o regime legal sobre poluição sonora, também designado "Regulamento Geral do Ruído”
A revisão do Regulamento Geral do Ruído aprovado pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 251/87, de 24 de Junho, com alterações introduzidas pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 292/89, de 2 de Setembro, constitui uma necessidade incontornável. O regime actualmente em vigor, ainda que pioneiro e de inegável importância na regulação da poluição sonora, mostra-se hoje claramente insuficiente para a salvaguarda da saúde e do bem-estar das pessoas, sendo certo que a poluição sonora constitui um dos principais factores de degradação da qualidade de vida das populações. A prová-lo está a conflitualidade social gerada por situações ligadas ao ruído, muitas delas não cobertas pelo âmbito de aplicação do diploma até agora em vigor, o qual apresenta visíveis deficiências ao nível do controlo preventivo e repressivo do ruído, e mesmo da efectividade geral do regime.
Por outro lado, a evolução ocorrida em face do tratamento da poluição sonora, nomeadamente as tendências apontadas no âmbito da proposta de directiva do Conselho da União Europeia sobre o ruído, bem como a complexidade crescente das questões que no decurso destes anos foram surgindo a propósito desta matéria, também exigiam a revisão deste regime, tal como, de resto, a impunham certas reformas legislativas entretanto ocorridas, designadamente o Código do Procedimento Administrativo. O presente diploma pretende, assim, enquadrar e dar resposta ao problema da poluição sonora, em desenvolvimento do regime jurídico estabelecido na Lei n.º 11/87, de 7 de Abril (Lei de Bases do Ambiente). Como orientações fundamentais, são de salientar o alargamento do âmbito de aplicação, a articulação com a restante disciplina jurídica, nomeadamente urbanística, o reforço do princípio da actuação preventiva, a adopção de figuras de planeamento específicas, a regulação de actividades temporárias geradoras de ruído e do ruído de vizinhança, o aperfeiçoamento do regime sancionatório e a previsão de medidas cautelares.
Importa salientar, ainda, na linha das orientações perfilhadas pelo Provedor de Justiça, a revogação dos preceitos da portaria n.º 326/95 (2.ª série), de 4 de Outubro, que estabelecem a cobrança de valores e a possibilidade de imposição de prestação de caução, pelas direcções regionais do ambiente e do ordenamento do território, em sede de ensaios acústicos realizados no âmbito de acções de fiscalização do cumprimento do Regulamento Geral do Ruído para avaliação do grau de incomodidade, na sequência de reclamações e a requerimento de entidades públicas ou privadas. Neste contexto, adopta-se, com o novo diploma, a possibilidade de imposição de prestação de caução aos agentes económicos que desenvolvam actividades potencialmente ruidosas, a qual poderá ser devolvida caso não surjam, num prazo razoável, reclamações por incomodidade imputada à actividade ou, surgindo, venha a concluir-se pela sua improcedência.
Ao nível da identificação do diploma e ainda que mantendo a designação utilizada em 1987 -
«Regulamento Geral do Ruído» - preconiza-se uma nova designação, com o intuito de salientar a força jurídica do normativo agora instituído, bem como a circunstância de estarmos perante uma verdadeira reforma do regime legal sobre a poluição sonora.

Approval of the legal regulations governing noise pollution, also known as the ‘General Noise Regulations’
The revision of the General Noise Regulations approved by Decree Law 251/87 of 24 June, with amendments introduced by Decree Law 292/89 of 2 September, constitutes an unavoidable necessity. The law currently in place, whilst pioneering and undeniably important for regulating noise pollution, is today clearly proving inadequate for safeguarding public health and well-being, especially considering that noise pollution is one of the principal factors responsible for lowering the population’s quality of life. The evidence of this is the social conflict caused by noise-related situations, many of which are not covered by the scope of enforcement of the current legislation, which displays visible shortcomings both in preventative and repressive noise control, and also in terms of general effectiveness.
Other factors that have made the revision of this law necessary include new developments in the treatment of noise pollution under the scope of the Council of the European Union’s proposed directive relating to noise, the growing complexity of issues that have arisen over the years in connection with the matter of noise pollution and, finally, the need to impose certain legislative reforms that have appeared since the current laws, in particular the Administrative Procedure Code, were put in place. The present law thus seeks to encompass and address the problem of noise pollution as a development of the law established by Act 11/87 of 7 April (the Environmental Act). The fundamental directives forming the basis for future law reform emphasize the extension of the field of application, establishing links with other legal disciplines, in particular urban planning, the reinforcement of the principle of preventative action, the adoption of specific planning policies, the regulation of temporary noise generating activities and neighbourhood noise and, finally, the improvement of the sanctions scheme and the planning of preventative measures.
In addition, in line with the guidelines proposed by the Ombudsman, it emphasizes the repeal of order 326/95 (2nd series) of 4 October that establishes that regional Spatial Planning and the Environment boards should collect fees and may command monetary instalment pledges. Instead, if complaints are made and public or private entities request them, noise level checks will be conducted to ensure that General Noise Regulations are not being broken, and to evaluate the degree of disturbance caused. In this context, within the new law, economic agencies developing potentially noisy activities may be ordered to deposit monetary instalment pledges to insure against any necessary future compensation. These deposits will be returned if no complaints about noise disturbance arise within a reasonable timescale, or, where complaints do arise, they are concluded to be without foundation.
Concerning the designation of the new law, even if the term ‘General Noise Regulations’, used in 1987 is maintained, it is proposed that the newly established law is given a new name, in order to emphasise its greater legal authority and the fact that it represents a true reform of the law on noise pollution.

As melhores receitas da região resultam da experiência dos pescadores, que ao longo do tempo aperfeiçoaram a confecção de tais produtos, de modo a conservar os sabores naturais.
Grelhar lentamente no carvão foi um dos métodos que implementaram, mas não o único. Cozinhar na cataplana, recipiente de cobre de origem islâmica, é especialmente eficaz na conservação dos aromas. Esta vasilha é uma das relíquias que o Algarve herdou devido à passagem de diferentes povos pelo seu território. O legado dos tempos e quotidianos longínquos - e das pessoas que lhes possam estar associados – é rico, podendo nos dias de hoje ser apreciado em restaurantes ou tasquinhas da região. A Cataplana de Peixes e Mariscos é um dos mais famosos pratos confeccionados no popular “tacho”.
O Xerém de Conquilhas é outro prato típico da região Sul do país. As papas de milho – xerém, em árabe – juntam-se a estes moluscos, existentes nas praias do Algarve e da Costa Alentejana, criando-se uma iguaria original com um toque árabe. Em Faro, é comum substituir-se as conquilhas por amêijoas.
A pesca do atum no Algarve é milenar, tendo este peixe uma forte relação com a cultura, tradição e hábitos de consumo da região. Bifes de Atum à Algarvia é uma receita de peso no seio desta cozinha.
Também o polvo marca uma importante presença no receituário algarvio, apresentando-se por exemplo em feijoadas, frito ou assado na brasa. O arroz de polvo é no entanto o prato mais célebre, especialmente a receita com origem em Santa Luzia.
Bife de Atum com Tomate
Ingredientes:
Para 4 pessoas
• 750 g de atum fresco
• 500 g de tomate maduro
• 2 dentes de alho
• 3 cebolas
• 2 cravinhos-da-índia
• 1 folha de louro
• 1 colher de sopa de banha
• 2 colheres de sopa de azeite
• sal e pimenta
Confecção:
Corta-se o atum em bifes, e o tomate, os alhos e as cebolas em rodelas.
Numa frigideira de barro dispõe-se metade da porção de cebola, depois metade da de tomate e dos alhos. Por cima colocam-se os bifes de atum que se temperam com sal, pimenta e o louro. Cobre-se com a restante cebola e restantes alho e tomate. Espalha-se por cima a banha e rega-se com o azeite. Introduzem-se os cravinhos, tapa-se a frigideira e levam-se os bifes a cozer em lume brando. A meio da cozedura levanta-se a tampa da frigideira e apoia-se sobre uma colher de pau para a manter levantada. Deixa-se apurar.
Servem-se acompanhados com batatas fritas e salada de tomate.
Tradução - inglês In the seaward-facing land of the Algarve, fish and seafood are central elements of local culinary traditions. The region’s best recipes are the result of years of experience on the part of local fishermen, who, over time, have perfected methods of cooking that best preserve the natural flavours of fish and seafood.
Perhaps the best-known of the methods used by the fishermen is slowly grilling the fish over charcoal. There are, however, other ways. Cooking the fish in a cataplana (a copper cooking vessel of Islamic origin) is especially effective for preserving the flavours of the fish. The cataplana is one of several objects brought into the Algarve during the time when many different peoples, races and cultures passed through its territory. The legacy of these distant times and ways of life - and of the people associated with them - is rich, and can still be tasted today in region’s restaurants and taverns. Cataplana de peixes e mariscos (fish and shellfish cooked in a cataplana) is one of the most famous dishes made in this traditional lidded copper pan.
Xerém de conquilhas (clams with baked maize flour meal and chorizo) is the other typical dish from the southern region of the country. The baked maize flour meal - xerém in Arabic - is cooked together with these shellfish, which are found on the beaches of the Algarve and the neighbouring Alentejo coast, to create a unique dish with an Arabic touch. In Faro, amêijoas (carpet shell clams) often substitute the more commonly used conquilhas (donax clams).
Tuna fishing is an ancient practice in the Algarve, and this fish is strongly linked to the region’s culture, traditions and eating habits. Bifes de Atum à Algarvia (Algarve tuna steaks) is an important recipe at the heart of the region’s cuisine.
Octopus also plays an important role in the Algarve’s repertoire of regional dishes, being served, for example, fried, grilled over charcoal, and in bean stews. Arroz de polvo (rice with octopus) - particularly the recipe originating in Santa Luzia - is, however, the region’s most famous octopus dish.
A taste of the Algarve: tuna steak with tomato
SERVES 4
READY IN 30 MINUTES
• 4 fresh tuna steaks (190g each)
• 500g ripe tomatoes
• 2 garlic cloves
• 3 onions
• 2 cloves
• 1 bay leaf
• 20g lard, at room temperature
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• salt and pepper
1 Slice the tomatoes, garlic and onions. Put half of the onion in a large frying pan, followed by half the tomatoes and half the garlic.
2 Season the tuna steaks with salt and pepper, and place them on top of the tomato, onion and garlic mixture. Add the bay leaf. Cover with the remaining onion, garlic and tomato. Spread the lard over the top of the mixture, and drizzle with olive oil.
3 Add the cloves, cover the frying pan, and place over a low heat. Cook for approximately 7 minutes, then prop open the lid slightly, by resting it on a wooden spoon. Cook for a further 3-8 minutes, until the steaks are cooked to your liking and the sauce has condensed a little (this relatively slow method of cooking brings out the full flavour of the fish and allows it to reach the perfect consistency). Allow to simmer.
Serve the traditional way, with chips and a tasty tomato salad.
