Texto de origem - português Tudo começou quando eu comprei um pacote de dez bonequinhos pedreiros por dezenove e noventa e nove. Coloquei os bonequinhos na maquete e fui embora. De noite, reparei que tinha um prédio novo lá. Não entendi muito bem o que tinha acontecido. Achei que eu devia estar ficando louco. Até que eu vi um tratorzinho remexendo na terra. Olhei, olhei... Dai eu resolvi voltar na loja para comprar mais bonequinhos. No dia seguinte, além de ter mais um predinho novo, tinham uns bonequinhos andando por ali. Então eu resolvi caprichar. Comprei mais dez pacotes com dez bonequinhos. Mas dessa vez comprei de tudo quanto era tipo. Homem, mulher, criança... Aproveitei e comprei uns carrinhos também. Coloquei eles na maquete e pronto. No dia seguinte lá estavam os bonequinhos e os carrinhos, andando de um lado pro outro. Daí eu fui me divertindo com aquilo. Comprei avião, trator, carreta, caminhão, barco. Tudo que eu achava que podia ser legal para os habitantes da minha pequena cidade eu comprava. E a cada dia que passava, os bonequinhos iam se multiplicando. Por conta própria mesmo, graças a Deus. Porque eu não ia agüentar pagar dezenove e noventa e nove em cada pacote com dez bonequinhos. Faz um tempão que eu não compro mais nada para eles. O mais curioso é pensar que tudo isso começou com um pacote de bonequinhos de dezenove e noventa e nove. Tem uma coisa que me intriga nessa história toda... por quê eles não vendem logo a merda dos pacotinhos de bonecos por vinte pratas? Texto de origem - português Conteúdos dos Áudioguias de Palmela POI #1 – Introdução – Voz Homem Bem-vindo a Palmela! Convidamos a visitar o centro histórico de Palmela e a conhecer a sua história, tradições e gentes. Habitada desde tempos pré-históricos, pela sua localização privilegiada e estratégica, Palmela apresenta vestígios das várias culturas que por aqui passaram. Palmela terá sido fundada pelos celtas 310 anos antes de Cristo embora se ignore o nome por que era então conhecida. No ano 106 da nossa era, os romanos reedificaram-na dando-lhe o nome da Palma Pequena, primeiro nome conhecido. Palco das lutas da conquista cristã aos Mouros, o seu primeiro Foral é atribuído por D. Afonso Henriques, em 1185. Contudo, a escolha do Castelo de Palmela, em 1443, como sede da Ordem Militar de Santiago de Espada durante quatro séculos é um marco fundamental da sua identidade. Não surpreende por isso que um dos elementos do brasão do município de Palmela seja uma cruz em forma de espada, um dos símbolos da Ordem de Santiago. Da importância adquirida ao longo dos tempos, o Castelo chega aos nossos dias, reabilitado e revitalizado arquitetonicamente. Descubra os contornos da paisagem e um conjunto de espaços que lhe sugerem prolongados passeios intemporais. Na sua visita, recomendamos a utilização do mapa como suporte à orientação na vila e o botão “HELP” do áudio guia, no caso de dificuldade na utilização do equipamento. Comecemos então a visita ao centro histórico de Palmela pelo local cimeiro: o seu Castelo! POI #2 – Castelo – Voz Mulher Datará do domínio árabe a construção do Castelo de Palmela. Palmela estava numa notável posição estratégica até porque o rio Sado estender-se-ia então até à base da encosta do castelo. Em tempo de guerra não havia inimigo que não fosse avistado, devido à sua posição altaneira. Em 1147, após a conquista de Lisboa, D. Afonso Henriques, primeiro rei de Portugal, conquistou Palmela. Mas para que o castelo não voltasse a cair em poder dos mouros, mandou-o reconstruir e ampliar, e doou a povoação aos cavaleiros de Santiago para que eles a povoassem e defendessem. O Castelo de Palmela foi sede da Ordem de Santiago de Espada até à sua extinção em 1834. Esta Ordem era constituída por grupos de frades-cavaleiros, os quais, em tempo de paz, eram frades e, em tempo de guerra, cavaleiros. Ao contrário dos frades das outras ordens militares, os espadatários, como eram conhecidos, na maioria podiam ser já casados ou contrair matrimónio. Os espadatários desempenharam uma ação de grande relevo nas reconquistas a sul do rio Tejo, em particular no Baixo Alentejo e Algarve. Após a conquista do Algarve, em 1249, esta ordem militar perdeu o seu grande objetivo inicial - a reconquista de território aos mouros. Dentro destas muralhas, sinta-se um verdadeiro Cavaleiro da Ordem de Santiago de Espada ou uma moura encantada e deixe-se conquistar pela História ouvindo em cada pedra murmúrios de outros tempos. Na Praça de Armas, percorra as galerias museológicas, sala a sala, e conheça os primeiros habitantes destas paragens. POI #3 – Praça de Armas – Voz Homem Este Castelo ou, pelo menos o local em que se encontra edificado, foi, desde sempre, um espaço que atraiu as populações que, ao longo da História de Portugal, se instalaram nesta região, tal como o atestam os vestígios aí encontrados pelos trabalhos de arqueologia nas escavações realizadas. A Praça de Armas é constituída por espaços arqueológicos divididos em diversas salas. Recorde a bravura de feitos heroicos na Praça de Armas, percorra as galerias museológicas e conheça os primeiros habitantes destas paragens. Estes espaços arqueológicos permitem que se perceba a evolução da ocupação do território, com um espólio que vai desde a presença neolítica, passando pelo período romano e visigótico e mais tarde pela presença árabe com mais de 500 anos. São seis as salas do Espaço Arqueológico do Museu; três das salas musealizadas, no lado norte, conservam restos de edifícios do período muçulmano e cristão medieval, postos a descoberto pela arqueologia. Os achados arqueológicos, expostos nestas salas, permitem reconstituir o quotidiano dos povos que habitaram o castelo na Idade Média: os governadores muçulmanos, os freires cavaleiros da Ordem de Santiago e as respetivas guarnições militares. Ao sair da sala 5-6 dirija-se ao espaço amplo à sua direita. Neste largo irá encontrar a cisterna maior, um miradouro, escavações e o heliógrafo. Comecemos pelo miradouro. POI #4 – Cisterna Maior e Miradouro – Voz Mulher O Castelo de Palmela está estrategicamente situado no cimo de uma colina, integrada no Parque Natural da Arrábida, oferecendo a quem o visita uma panorâmica deslumbrante. Hoje, o Castelo já não tem uma função militar e de defesa, mas mantém a sua importância como monumento. A abrangência da vista alcançada a partir do castelo de Palmela e a sua paisagem é um dos aspetos mais procurado pelos visitantes. Este Castelo tem uma vista magnífica sobre a vila de Palmela e a cidade de Setúbal, sobre a Reserva Nacional do Estuário do Sado e do Tejo e sobre o Parque Natural da Arrábida. Sugestão: Som de mar/ondas A sua posição é considerada estratégica do ponto de vista militar, pois situa-se entre dois rios, rio Sado e rio Tejo, num alto espigão rochoso. No centro deste largo encontra a cisterna que é designada por Cisterna Maior, uma vez que é a de maior capacidade Castelo e, que ainda hoje abastece de água a Vila de Palmela. Lançamos-lhe um desafio: Pare junto à cisterna e escute. Se ficar atento consegue ouvir o som da água da cisterna. Num dos cantos deste largo poderá encontrar mais escavações e uma das perolas deste castelo, o heliógrafo. POI #5 - Escavações – Voz Homem Sugestão: Sons das escavações, martelos e afins… As escavações arqueológicas realizadas neste espaço da alcáçova do Castelo de Palmela puseram a descoberto a face interna da muralha primitiva, com as sucessivas reparações e adaptações, desde os séculos IX-X até ao século XVII. Esta seria uma das áreas destinadas à vida da guarnição militar do castelo, onde a laboração do ferro teve particular destaque. Associados a abundantes escórias de ferro, a peças de armamento, a artefactos metálicos variados e a vasilhame cerâmico, registaram-se fornos de forja para afinação do metal e pré-aquecimento antes do trabalho final na forja. A atividade ter-se-á iniciado no período islâmico (cerca de finais do século X a inícios do XI) e perdurado ao longo do século XII. A segunda metade do século XII é o período arqueologicamente melhor documentado neste sector: objetos do quotidiano, marcas de edificação e destruição revelam momentos de guerra e de paz das primeiras instalações portuguesas e da curta permanência almóada, os últimos muçulmanos a habitar o castelo. Por trás das escavações, junto à muralha, poderá encontrar parte da estrutura de um heliógrafo. POI #6 – Heliógrafo – Voz Mulher Em 1885, instalou-se no castelo de Palmela um heliógrafo para o serviço militar de transmissões telegráficas óticas, ficando assim sediada no castelo a telegrafia militar, mais propriamente no atual núcleo museológico, conhecido como a “Casa dos Radiotelegrafistas”. Este foi o ultimo posto retransmissor que o Exército manteve em Palmela tendo em 1993 sido transferido para a Serra da Arrábida. Não percebeu o que era o heliógrafo nem como funcionava? Aqui apenas pode observar o seu suporte, mas suba as escadas ingremes à sua esquerda, por cima das salas 5-6 da Praça de Armas, e venha conhecer o Núcleo Museológico sobre Transmissões Militares, a funcionar das 10/12h30 e 14/18h. POI #7 – Núcleo Museológico sobre Transmissões Militares – Voz Homem O castelo de Palmela constitui desde o período islâmico um importante posto de controlo e defesa territorial, dada a sua situação geo-estratégica entre o rio Tejo e o rio Sado. Nesta sala altaneira, funciona o núcleo Museológico sobre Transmissões Militares. Este espaço, conhecido como Casa dos Radiotelegrafistas, foi criado em memória das instalações militares sediadas neste castelo, entre 1889 e 1990. Sugestão: Som de mensagens telegrafadas…. Aqui, a história dos meios de transmissão militar é apresentada. A coleção exposta - maioritariamente oriunda do Museu da Arma de Transmissões do Exército Português - inclui espólio representativo dos meios de transmissão físicos e sonoros, visuais e óticos (destaque para a telegrafia ótica), elétrico-eletrónicos (material telefónico e telegráfico), manuais de instrução, material de linhas e de medida e ensaio, entre outros. A faixa cronológica estende-se do período islâmico à Guerra Colonial portuguesa. Chamamos a atenção para o telefone centenário na parede e para a ilustração do funcionamento do heliógrafo. Saia do núcleo museológico e suba agora ao ponto mais alto deste Castelo, à sua direita, a Torre de Menagem, a cerca de 274 metros de altitude. POI #8 – Torre de Menagem – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem Neste local, privilegiado pela natureza, pode desfrutar na sua plenitude de todas as paisagens que irá deslumbrar ao longo deste percurso. Experimente agora fazer uma rotação de 360º, será uma experiência extraordinária. A torre de menagem tem cinco faces, é coroada com ameias e rasgada por seteiras. É o ponto mais alto da região e foi mandada construir por D. Dinis, 6.º rei de Portugal.. No interior desta imponente torre de menagem esteve encarcerado, no séc. XV, por conspiração contra a vida do rei D. João II, o Bispo de Évora, D. Garcia de Meneses. Aqui morreu de peçonha, envenenado, numa cisterna, mais conhecida por masmorra, localizada no piso inferior da torre de menagem. Também durante a crise de soberania de 1383/85 é bastante conhecido o episódio das almenaras, ou seja, grandes fogueiras que o Condestável D. Nuno Álvares Pereira mandou acender no Castelo de Palmela para avisar D. João I da sua presença e ajuda próxima, uma vez que este se encontrava cercado, em Lisboa, pelo exército castelhano. O exército castelhano era muito mais numeroso mas, mesmo assim, foi derrotado na batalha de Aljubarrota. Sugestão: Som de batalha e de espadas D. Nuno Álvares Pereira é considerado o maior guerreiro português de sempre e um génio militar. Comandou forças em número inferior ao inimigo e venceu todas as batalhas que travou. É o patrono da infantaria portuguesa. Volte ao piso térreo e dirija-se à entrada do castelo, junto a um poço. POI #9 – Cisterna – Voz Mulher Este largo, em frente da Igreja de Santa Maria, corresponde a uma cisterna sendo apenas visível um poço. Como antigamente não havia água canalizada, as cisternas eram muito importantes, daí existirem quatro cisternas neste Castelo. Eram reservatórios para as águas da chuva, necessárias aos habitantes do Castelo, sobretudo se este fosse sitiado, isto é, cercado por inimigos. Entre a cisterna e a torre de menagem, à sua direita, situam-se as ruínas da Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, mandada construir no séc. XII, pelo primeiro Rei de Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. Trata-se da primeira igreja paroquial que existiu em Palmela e uma das igrejas mais antigas da região. Pode aceder até ela pela plataforma de metal ou simplesmente visioná-la do cimo. POI #10 – Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo – Voz Homem/Voz Mulher A Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, que ostenta uma traça renascentista, foi possivelmente fundada sobre as ruínas da mesquita muçulmana, após a conquista do castelo por D. Afonso Henriques, e consagrada ao culto de Maria. Pouco resta na verdade, do templo primitivo e das obras, acrescentos e modificações que sofreu ao longo do século XVI e XVII. Em 1755, o chamado terramoto de Lisboa, que destruiu grande parte daquela cidade, também afetou Palmela, tendo destruído esta Igreja, da qual apenas restam ruínas, a sacristia e alguns azulejos do séc. XVII, em azul e amarelo, típicos dessa época. A antiga sacristia foi recuperada par a instalar o Gabinete de Estudos sobre a Ordem de Santiago, onde poderá consultar diversa documentação sobre a referida Ordem. Convidamos a visitar o espaço que funciona das 9/13h e das 14/17h. Esta zona do Castelo possui algumas árvores e arbustos típicos de países mediterrânicos, como os ciprestes, uma romãzeira e arbustos da Arrábida. Retome a visita pelo lado sul do castelo aonde encontrará a Casa do Comandante da Fortaleza. Nesta casa do Comandante nasceu a 4 de Fevereiro de 1841, Hermenegildo Brito Capelo, explorador, topógrafo e aventureiro em terras de África. Esta personalidade histórica ficou célebre porque realizou a primeira travessia terrestre entre Angola e Moçambique, numa altura em que muitos outros europeus se aventuravam no interior de África, numa tentativa de explorar esse continente até então inóspito e desconhecido. Suba agora as escadas, à esquerda da Casa do Comandante, e tire a típica fotografia dos noivos que casam em Palmela, na janela com vista para a cidade de Setúbal. Posteriormente, desça as escadas e siga até ao Terraço Sul. POI #11 – Terraço Sul – Voz Homem Entre as águas calmas e cristalinas, areias douradas, a companhia de uma das maiores comunidades de golfinhos da Europa e uma Serra abundante e repleta de vida, do terraço Sul ou Miradouro de Baixo, como era conhecido pelos frades da Ordem de Santiago, poderá observar a cidade de Setúbal, o estuário do rio Sado, a península de Troia, a cordilheira da Arrábida e o vasto oceano Atlântico. À primeira vista, Palmela impressiona pelas suas paisagens e pela sua extensão. Entre a serra e a planície, o seu olhar perde-se nos horizontes sem fim. Terra de contrastes, o concelho de Palmela estende-se ao longo de cerca de 460 quilómetros quadrados, entre o Parque Natural da Arrábida, paisagem protegida desde 1976, e a Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado, entre os hectares de vinha e as povoações hospitaleiras, entre a história milenar e a comodidade da vida metropolitana. Do Parque Natural da Arrábida extraía-se a brecha da Arrábida, que se pode observar na arca-ossário de D. Jorge da Igreja de Santiago. Essa é uma pedra característica desta serra e a sua exploração foi proibida para evitar o esgotamento desse bem natural. O terraço sul é ladeado a poente pelos Paços de D. Jorge, as instalações onde vivia este último mestre da Ordem de Santiago, entre 1481 e 1550. Neste terraço constitui ainda elemento de interesse, um relógio de sol que se pode observar na parede da Igreja. Será que o consegue encontrar? Após passar pela porta encontra à sua esquerda o acesso ao interior do Relógio da Igreja de Santiago e a Reserva visitável de “Esculturas S. Tiago”. Este espaço pode ser visitado das 10/12h30 e das 14/18h ou com marcação prévia. POI #12 – Relógio e Reserva Visitável das “Esculturas S. Tiago” – Voz Mulher A reserva visitável das Escultura S. Tiago integra obras de estatuária antiga - séculos XV, XVI e XVII - em pedra e madeira, de diferentes oficinas escultóricas. Aí encontramos diferentes formas de representar S. Tiago, santo patrono da Ordem Religiosa e Militar sediada no Castelo de Palmela entre os séculos XV e XIX. S. Tiago foi um dos primeiros discípulos de Jesus. Em todas as esculturas que o retratam, podem-se observar os atributos deste santo: o chapéu, o manto, a sacola, o bordão, o livro dos evangelhos, e a vieira, também o uso da cabaça e o facto de serem representados descalços são considerados atributos de S. Tiago. Propriedade do Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, de Lisboa, este espólio está depositado no Museu Municipal de Palmela e exposto numa sala dos chamados Paços de D. Jorge e no Côro-Alto da Igreja de Santiago. Do Coro-Alto da Igreja de Santiago tem uma visita privilegiada sobre a igreja, na qual por vezes a entrada é paga quando decorre determinadas exposições. Agora pare e escute o tic-tac de um relógio…Siga o som! Sugestão: Som tic-tac dos relógios antigos Esta é a sua oportunidade de ver o interior do relógio da Igreja de Santiago. O relógio da torre sineira da Igreja de Santiago, de ponteiro único, data de 1752 e foi fabricado em Liège, na Oficina Henri Rossius. Saia agora deste núcleo museológico e dirija-se para a entrada da Igreja de Santiago. POI #13 – Igreja de Santiago - Exterior – Voz Homem A Igreja de Santiago era o local de culto dos frades-cavaleiros da Ordem de Santiago, que aí rezavam e faziam os seus cânticos litúrgicos. As principais características arquitetónicas da Igreja de Santiago são a silhueta coroada por ameias, o óculo em cima do portal principal e a torre sineira. Na fachada da Igreja de Santiago pode observar-se o portal de entrada que apresenta um arco quebrado composto por quatro delgados colunelos sob a base dos quais sobressai discretamente uma vieira, atributo do patrono do monumento e da Ordem Militar de Santiago, que aqui teve a sua última sede. A Igreja de Santiago é atualmente utilizada como sala de exposições onde podem ser apreciadas exposições sobre diversas temáticas, concertos de música clássica, entre outros eventos de dinamização deste espaço. Convidamos a conhecer o seu interior normalmente gratuito exceto quando decorrem determinadas exposições. POI #14 – Igreja de Santiago - Interior – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem A Igreja de Santiago é um templo do gótico final, edifício de planta retangular dividido em três naves na qual se podem observar restos de decoração em azulejo dos séculos XVII e XVIII e os característicos arcos quebrados. Sobre a entrada da Igreja fica o coro-alto, local onde os frades cantavam durante o serviço religioso. Sugestão: Som de cantos gregorianos Encimando a porta lateral norte da Igreja, existe uma pequena abóbada estrelada, decorada com frescos, cujas pedras de fecho têm figuras esculpidas, relacionadas com a lenda e os atributos de S. Tiago. No chão da nave central existem várias lápides em pedra. Trata-se de túmulos de personalidades ilustres ligadas à Ordem de Santiago. Na nave esquerda, antes da capela-mor, encontra-se a arca-ossário de D. Jorge de Lencastre, que faleceu em 1550, filho bastardo do rei D. João II e último Mestre da Ordem de Santiago antes da incorporação desta na coroa Portuguesa, Na capela-mor poderá observar sobre o altar-mor uma réplica do Retábulo da Vida e da Obra de S. Tiago e, à direita, outra réplica de um alto-relevo gótico do séc. XIV intitulado de “Santiago combatendo os Mouros”. A iluminação natural da Igreja é feita pelo óculo e por frestas que lhe conferem uma luminosidade difusa e discreta, aprofundando o espaço e o seu sentido místico. Saia agora da igreja e dirija-se ao edifício que atualmente funciona como Pousada de Turismo, o último Convento da Ordem de Santiago. Esta é a melhor oportunidade para observar o mostrador do relógio, na face norte da Igreja de Santiago. POI #15 – Pousada de Palmela – Voz Mulher O antigo Convento da Ordem de Santiago, no qual os frades dormiam, rezavam, estudavam e tomavam as suas refeições, está hoje convertido em Pousada de Turismo. Esta conversão aconteceu em 1970. Sugestão: Som da liturgia em LATIM Os frades / cavaleiros de Santiago instalaram-se no Castelo de Palmela no séc. XII, mas foi no reinado de D. João I, no séc. XV que se inicia a construção do convento – sede desta importante Ordem religioso-militar. Até ao séc. XIX este edifício sofreu muitas reconstruções, ampliações e recuperações. Propomos a entrada na Pousada para visitar os claustros e o miradouro do Pátio do Pessegueiro ou simplesmente beber um moscatel de Setúbal no bar. Neste espaço requintado também poderá passar uma noite e apreciar um belo almoço ou jantar, no antigo refeitório dos frades da Ordem de Santiago, onde poderá apreciar o púlpito onde eram feitas as orações na altura das refeições. Após a sua visita, saia da Pousada mas antes de começar a descer para o centro histórico, aprecie a paisagem a norte do Castelo. POI #16 – Miradouro Norte junto ao estacionamento da Pousada – Voz Homem Deste miradouro pode ver, na margem norte da imensa bacia hidrográfica do rio Tejo, a cidade de Lisboa – capital portuguesa – e as duas pontes que a ligam à Península de Setúbal: a jusante a ponte 25 de Abril, assim designada para homenagear a Revolução de 1974 e, a montante (nordeste), a ponte Vasco da Gama; o nome desta ponte recorda-nos o navegador que descobriu o caminho marítimo para a Índia e que foi, também, cavaleiro da Ordem de Santiago. Aos seus pés fica a vila de Palmela. Por entre ruas e ruelas, de velhas e novas calçadas, perca-se na história de Palmela e descubra os recantos e encantos do centro histórico. Desça ou suba as escadinhas que levam aos miradouros e aos pequenos largos e admire os edifícios. Passeie por entre o casario branco, debruado a cinza e outros coloridos, a lembrar uma geografia do sul, mesclada por culturas doutras paragens, onde os gatos adotados pela vizinhança se espreguiçam e brincam livremente. Comece agora a descer a caminho do centro histórico e saia pela porta principal do Castelo, a chamada porta falsa. Visite o Parque Venâncio Ribeiro da Costa. Se trouxe piquenique, este é o local ideal para o fazer. Aceda ao parque através das escadas, junto à paragem do autocarro, número P5. POI #17 – Parque Venâncio Ribeiro da Costa – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem Desça as escadas e mergulho no verde e na tranquilidade… Feche os olhos e sinta os cheiros… De forma a contemplar todas as valências do jardim, siga as setas ao longo do jardim com o símbolo do “AudioTour”. Sugestão: Som de pássaros a chilrear O Parque Venâncio Ribeiro da Costa é o espaço de recreio, por excelência, das gentes de Palmela. Cada estação do ano traz cores, sons e aromas diferentes. Sitio de elevada beleza cénica, que liga o Castelo ao Centro Histórico, mantém as características românticas que o viram nascer desde a segunda década do séc. XX, e uma frondosa vegetação donde sobressaem algumas espécies autóctones, como o carvalho e o carvalho cerquinho e outras vindas de paragens diversas, como o plátano e o feto arbóreo. As espécies autóctones estão identificadas com grandes estacas de cor vermelha, mas se encontrar alguma estaca amarela, significa que essa espécie não é autóctone, isto é, não tem origem na região. Equipado com anfiteatro, jardim infantil, hortas comunitárias, circuito de manutenção, parque de merendas e equipamentos multifuncionais é um local de todos os dias e de todos os habitantes que o partilham com os visitantes e turistas. O antigo Moinho de Vento e outros edifícios agora recuperados, acolhem associações juvenis que também têm revitalizado pequenas hortas. Sugestão: Som de crianças a brincar no jardim ou em piquenique Desde que este parque foi criado muitas pessoas vêm aqui descansar e conviver. Antigamente, muitas famílias passavam aqui os seus domingos em animados piqueniques, tradição que está a ser revitalizada. Na primeira segunda-feira, a seguir ao Domingo de Páscoa é comemorado o Dia das Merendas e realiza-se aqui um grande piquenique anual. Saia agora do parque e entre no casario do Centro Histórico de Palmela. Desça a Rua Heliodoro Salgado até encontrar à sua direita umas escadas que permitem o acesso ao Largo da Boavista. Utilize o mapa como suporte à identificação do nome das ruas, sempre que necessário. Entretanto, faremos uma breve apresentação do Centro Histórico de Palmela. POI #18 – Centro Histórico de Palmela – Voz Mulher À medida que o Castelo se foi consolidando e expandindo desde o período Medieval Islâmico, mas sobretudo ao longo do Período Medieval Cristão e Moderno, o Centro Histórico foi assumindo a sua configuração sinuosa ao longo da encosta. As casas e as ruas existentes no Centro Histórico da Vila de Palmela cresceram ao longo do tempo. A geografia, o conhecimento e os materiais de construção de que se dispunha nas várias épocas, permitiram criar um espaço único que poderá agora descobrir: ruas, largos, becos, estradas, casas, varandas, janelas. Localizada na encosta norte do Castelo, a povoação orientou o seu crescimento para as zonas mais baixas, mas próximas da proteção deste monumento. Tudo o que pode observar fala-nos de tempos. De um tempo que, apesar de já ter passado, ficará tatuado nas pedras das casas, nas ruas e na memória das pessoas. À sua direita vai encontrar as escadas que permitem o acesso ao Largo da Boavista. À esquerda dessas escadas aprecie o painel de azulejos desenhado e pintado por Andreas Stocklein em 1989, alusivo às Quatro Estações. POI #19 – Largo da Boavista – Voz Homem/Voz Mulher Do Miradouro da Boavista poderá contemplar o tipo de telhados do casario de Palmela, os chamados ”telhados tesouro” que se caracterizam essencialmente por cada telhado, de quatro faces, corresponder a uma única divisão pelo que cada casa terá tantos telhados quantas divisões tiver. Neste miradouro pode ainda vislumbrar parte do Parque Natural da Arrábida. No Largo da Boavista, a Sociedade Filarmónica Palmelense “Loureiros” teve a sua primeira sede, criada em Outubro de 1852. Edifício com imponente fachada de dois andares e telhados de tesouro, provavelmente do séc. XVIII, com uma fila de varandas de sacada no andar superior, cujos gradeamentos de ferro forjados são já do séc. XIX, época em que foi acrescentada à fachada uma platibanda com balaustres de louça branca. Sugestão: Som de preparar cimento e rebocar paredes… obras Contrapondo este edifício de traça arquitetónica tradicional, no qual utilizaram materiais não tradicionais na reconstrução, existe um outro edifício que surpreende visualmente pela diferença arquitetónica com o casario, da cor do barro, em cuja construção se procurou recuperar os materiais outrora utlizados na construção do casario. Suba agora a Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque e lançamos um desafio… perca-se por poucos minutos nestas ruas… circule pelos quarteirões à sua direita, ou à sua esquerda, mas volte a esta rua, Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque, para prosseguirmos caminho. Utilize o mapa como suporte à identificação do nome das ruas, sempre que necessário. No final desta rua, Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque, encontrará o Terraço do Mercado. POI #20 – Terraço do Mercado – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem Neste largo pode observar-se o caracter pitoresco das fachadas das casas, algumas delas do século XIX. Aqui poderá encontrar pormenores como os telhados de tesouro; uma varanda de ferro forjado em forma de coração, nas portas número 2 a 4; uma fachada de duplo beirado e platibanda com círculos de massa em tons de branco e azul na porta número 62. No interior do Mercado Municipal de Palmela, as escavações arqueológicas realizadas no local pelo município em 2002, revela-nos o quotidiano medieval da vila nos séculos XIV-XV: foram aí encontradas cerâmicas importadas de Aragão e Castela, do reino muçulmano de Granada e de repúblicas italianas, bem como produções locais de influência muçulmana; pelos vestígios alimentares identificados, ficamos a saber que a população dos séculos XIV-XV consumia, entre outros, javali, veado, vaca, cabra, ovelha, coelho, galo, buzio, mexilhão, ostra, lamejinha, e usava peles de lince e gato bravo na produção artesanal. No Mercado Municipal, convidamos a comprar alguns produtos típicos com especial enfase para as frutas e os produtos hortícolas. Sugestão: Som do mercado em funcionamento A região de Palmela tem uma zona rural extensa com elevada produção e produtos de elevada qualidade. Experimente a maçã riscadinha, fruto característico da região de Palmela, cuja produção ocorre apenas nos meses de Verão, sobretudo em Julho e Agosto, da qual também poderá provar as suas deliciosas compotas. De referir ainda, as uvas, fruta de elevada qualidade que torna a região de Palmela uma zona vinícola de referência nacional. No Largo do Mercado ainda poderá encontrar algumas das lojas típicas, o chamado comércio tradicional, Retome a Rua Hermenegildo Capelo. No n.º 52 poderá conhecer uma taberna típica de Palmela. Peça um copo de 3 ou simplesmente refresque-se. POI #21 – Taberna Típica – Voz Mulher Já descobriu o que é um copo de 3?! Senão, aqui fica a dica: é um copo com 3 dedos de vinho tinto! Sugestão: Som fundo num café, loiça e animação de jogo de cartas, por exemplo Esperemos que ainda mantenha o sentido de orientação porque vamos necessitar de atenção para as próximas instruções. Retome a Rua Hermenegildo Capelo, vire à direita na Rua 31 de Janeiro, desça as escadas na Rua Coronel Galhardo, volte à direita na Rua do Passadiço e, finalmente, volte à esquerda para o Largo Marquês de Pombal. Perdido? Confuso? Não se preocupe! Siga o trajeto no mapa até encontrar o Largo Marques de Pombal. Vai achar este pequeno trajeto imperdível! POI #22 – Largo Marquês de Pombal – Voz Homem Apenas no início da República Portuguesa atribuiu-se a este largo o nome de Marquês de Pombal, pois antes de 1911 designava-se Largo de S. Sebastião. Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Conde de Oeiras e mais conhecido como Marquês de Pombal, foi secretário de Estado do Reino, o equivalente a primeiro-ministro, no reinado de D. José I, constituindo uma das figuras mais controversas e carismáticas da História Portuguesa. Controversas, por exemplo, por ter expulso os jesuítas de Portugal, carismático por ter sido o grande mentor da reconstrução da baixa de Lisboa, no período pós-terramoto de 1755. Sugestão: Som de água a escorrer numa fonte Ao centro do largo, encontra-se um chafariz. Este chafariz, de tipo Obelisco, sem data conhecida, é feito em pedra e de construção austera. Na base, apresenta duas torneiras e duas bacias para a água e no topo uma estrutura em ferro que sustenta quatro candeeiros. Este tipo de Chafariz, elemento isolado e implantado no centro das praças, generalizou-se no século XIX. Vire agora à esquerda para a Rua Almirante dos Reis e siga até ao miradouro, no Largo do Terreiro. POI #23 – Miradouro do Terreiro – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem Neste terreiro, virado para o parque natural da Arrábida, podemos observar o vale de Barris ladeado pela serra dos Gaiteiros, com a Serra da Arrábida e S. Luís atrás, e a Sudoeste as Serras do Louro e de S. Filipe. De realçar o relevo acidentado e a diversidade botânica que proporciona no Vale dos Barris, um efeito de mosaico, com zonas de prados, olivais, matos e florestas. Neste Vale Jurássico dos Barris predominam “barros” castanho-avermelhados calcários, explorados industrialmente no passado. Estas formações jurássicas, constituídas fundamentalmente por calcários, margas e grés, são das mais antigas unidades geológicas presentes no concelho. Sugestão: Som da mó de olaria a rodar e a mexer na água, como se estivessem a fazer 1 peça A azulejaria é por isso uma atividade artesanal que se mantém ativa na região. Propomos uma visita ao Espaço Fortuna, a dois passos de Palmela, o qual convida-o a um encontro com a tradição do barro, arte milenar que individualiza as raízes de um povo, testemunha o seu passado e dá expressão à sua cultura. Do Forno à pintura, em pequenas peças ou em grandes painéis de azulejo, cada objeto é único porque nasce do mistério e da força do artificie. Entretanto, prossiga caminho e volte à esquerda para a Rua de Santa Ana até ao Lavadouro de Santa Ana. Utilize o mapa como suporte à identificação do nome das ruas, sempre que necessário. POI #24 – Lavadouro de Santa Ana – Voz Mulher O lavadouro, datado do século XIX, é constituído por dois tanques em pedra, um de grande dimensão e outro menor, destinados à lavagem de roupa. Atualmente tem a mesma função sendo comum, no Verão, a lavagem de tapetes de grandes dimensões. Exibe uma tabela em pedra com inscrições em latim, datada de 1827. Apresenta também uma estrutura de proteção em alvenaria e madeira. Antes de existir água canalizada, as mulheres – aguadeiras – iam aos poços, às fontes e aos chafarizes buscar água para vender. Os burros ajudavam a carregar os cântaros. Sugestão: Som dos cânticos das lavadeiras, a mexer na água e a bater a roupa… Enquanto trabalhavam, as lavadeiras aproveitavam para conversar. No Verão, muitas crianças também se divertiam a tomar banho! E enquanto esperavam pela sua vez de encher o cântaro, rapazes e raparigas começavam a namorar. Volte atrás até à Rua Hermenegildo Capelo e prossiga caminho. Se estiver aberta, sugerimos a breve visita a uma pequena adega em atividade dentro do centro histórico: a Adega Xavier Santana. POI #25 – Adega Xavier Santana – Voz Homem Fundada em 1926 por Xavier Santana, a empresa permaneceu em seu nome próprio até à década de 70, quando foi constituída uma sociedade familiar com a designação atual de Xavier Santana Sucessores. A atividade comercial da empresa centrou-se inicialmente na produção e comercialização de vinho em barril e na preparação de azeitonas. Em 1990, a conjuntura de mercado proporcionou o investimento da empresa no engarrafamento dos vinhos como aposta na sua expansão a vários níveis, sustentada pela relação superior de qualidade e preço dos seus produtos. Atualmente, a adega dispõe de uma ampla sala de visitas que proporciona a realização de provas de vinhos e eventos únicos. As visitas guiadas à adega funcionam por reserva prévia. No decorrer do percurso, no Largo de S. João Baptista, irá visitar a Casa Mãe Rota dos Vinhos da Península de Setúbal onde poderá encontrar todos os vinhos produzidos nesta adega e na região. Retome a Rua Hermenegildo Capelo e desça até ao Largo do Chafariz D. Maria I. Dirija-se ao Chafariz D. Maria I, à sua direita. POI #26 – Chafariz D. Maria I – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem O primeiro chafariz aqui existente dataria de 1549, construído por ordem de D. Jorge de Lencastre, Mestre da Ordem de Santiago. Terá sido restaurado e remodelado no reinado de D. Maria I, conforme consta da inscrição do frontão, em 1792. Foi um importante local de encontro, onde gentes e animais saciavam a sede e onde os habitantes da vila se abasteciam para as tarefas do quotidiano, num sobe e desce permanente e fatigante. D. Maria I foi a primeira mulher a assumir a coroa portuguesa, entre 1777 e 1816, e ficou conhecida com o cognome de “A Piedosa”. Criou numerosas instituições de cultura e artes, a Lotaria, para proveito da Misericórdia de Lisboa e fundou a Real Casa Pia de Lisboa, que ainda hoje tem por missão integrar crianças e adolescentes, designadamente as desprovidas de meio familiar adequado, garantindo-lhes percursos educativos inclusivos. Sugestão: Som de recreio e de crianças a rir D. Maria I reconstruiu o chafariz ao gosto da época, de acordo com estética cenográfica barroca, com os fogaréus a encimar toda a monumentalidade do edifício, que também ostenta o brasão e as armas da vila. Em 1953, é criada a rede de água canalizada na vila de Palmela. No chafariz, as bicas foram substituídas por torneiras, benefício que, lentamente, chegou a todas as habitações. Se tem sede, este é o local ideal para a saciar. Sugestão: Som de água a verter na fonte Se preferir vinho, a Casa Mãe Rota dos Vinhos já está próxima. Passe em frente ao Chafariz D. Maria I e continue a caminhar ao longo da estrada até encontrar umas escadas ao seu lado direito. Suba as escadas e depois todo o Jardim Joaquim José Carvalho até ao Miradouro à sua esquerda, no Largo de S. João Baptista. Entretanto, descrevemos um dos doces típicos de Palmela: a Fogaça de Palmela! POI #27 – Fogaça de Palmela – Voz Mulher Pão em massa, açúcar amarelo, farinha, banha, ovos, laranjas, aguardente, canela e erva-doce são os ingredientes de um dos mais típicos doces de Palmela. Depois de juntar e amassar todos os ingredientes, moldam-se bonecos, decoram-se e pintam-se com ovo batido antes da cozedura no forno. Tradicionalmente, as fogaças eram feitas a seguir às principais festas e romarias, para se obterem fundos para cobrir as despesas da festa principal. A origem destes bolos designados por fogaças, surge por inicialmente tais bolos serem cozidos diretamente ao fogo ou, mais exatamente, em cima do borralho da lareira ou do forno. Sugestão: Som de bater bolos A data mais marcada era a de 15 de Janeiro, em que se festeja Santo Amaro. Nesse dia, na igreja paroquial, eram benzidas as fogaças que correspondiam a promessas formuladas àquele santo e que, em harmonia com o problema que havia originado a promessa, se revestiam de formas diferentes mas, em qualquer caso, evocativas da aflição: um pé, um braço, um animal, um cacho de uvas, etc. O produto da venda das fogaças revertia para o culto de Santo Amaro. Se já subiu o Jardim Joaquim José Carvalho vire à esquerda e encontrará o miradouro. Utilize o mapa como suporte à identificação do nome das ruas, sempre que necessário. POI #28 – Miradouro – Voz Homem No Parque Natural da Serra da Arrábida, à sua frente, pode observar as serras dos Gaiteiros, S. Luís, Arrábida, S. Francisco, do Louro com os seus moinhos de vento. Sugestão: Som da vela dos Moinhos de Vento e da mó a desfazer o cereal Vigilantes no alto da Serra do Louro, os moinhos são testemunhas atentas do tempo e da história, habitam o olhar e enriquecem a imaginação. Por vezes, ainda ouvimos o som do vento trespassado pelas velas, entrando fugaz pelas cabaças. Os moinhos de vento do Concelho de Palmela localizam-se maioritariamente na Serra do Louro, nomeadamente nas localidades de Palmela e Quinta do Anjo. São engrenagens extraordinárias que marcam a história do cereal, do pão e da região ao longo de séculos da sua existência. Para oeste, consegue ainda avistar a freguesia de Quinta do Anjo, terra de pastores e queijeiros. Sugestão: Som de chocalhos das ovelhas Deixe que o olhar se perca por entre montanhas, vales e perfis imponentes, ao som dos chocalhos que anunciam, ao longe, os típicos rebanhos a pastar; é da “Serra Mãe”, outrora candidata a Património Mundial, que nos chega um dos principais emblemas da região: o inigualável Queijo de Azeitão, cuja maioria das queijarias tradicionais laboram na aldeia de Quinta do Anjo. Neste preciso local aonde se encontra, situava-se a ocupação humana mais antiga da vila, com o povoado do Casal da Cerca datado do final do VI milénio e inícios do V milénio a.c Talvez por isso tenha chegado a um dos Largos mais importantes da vila de Palmela: o Largo de S. João Baptista. POI #29 – Largo de S. João Baptista – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem O Largo de S. João Baptista é considerado o Centro da vila de Palmela. Neste local encontra diversas infraestruturas carismáticas. Sente-se num dos bancos que aqui encontra para lhe descrevermos o que avista. - O primeiro edifício à sua esquerda é a Biblioteca Municipal que aqui foi instalada em 2002 e na qual também se realizam exposições permanentes de artes plásticas. Este edifício, construído na primeira metade do século XX, foi a antiga Escola Primária de S. João para a qual a população ajudou a comprar os materiais de construção e as mobílias. - Ao centro encontra o Coreto que confere romantismo ao largo. Da autoria de Salvador Augusto Camolas, foi construído em 1924 pela Sociedade Filarmónica Humanitária e destinava-se ao uso da Banda evidenciando a importância que a música sempre teve na vila de Palmela. Sugestão: Som de banda filarmónica - O elemento religioso deste largo é a Capela de S. João Baptista, templo da Ordem de Malta, que foi construído na segunda metade do século XVII. Tem uma arquitetura simples mas está protegida com a classificação de Monumento de Valor Concelhio desde 1997. Aqui já não são realizadas cerimónias religiosas desde 1910. - No Verão costuma ter uma esplanada pertencente à Casa Mãe da Rota dos Vinhos da Península de Setúbal, que descreveremos de seguida e cuja visita recomendamos. - Em frente da Casa Mãe Rota dos Vinhos encontra o Cineteatro S. João, edifício de grande beleza arquitetónica dos anos 50, que lhe descreveremos posteriormente. Sugestão: Som de festa seguido de foguetes Em Setembro, no Largo de S. João Baptista, realizam-se as Festas das Vindimas, conhecidas em todo o país aonde o Vinho é rei e que marca uma das etapas mais importantes para a Industria Vinícola, as Vindimas. POI #30 – Casa Mãe da Rota dos Vinhos – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem A Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos da Península de Setúbal é a adaptação de uma antiga adega dos anos 40, tendo-se procurado manter as suas características vinícolas. Este edifício surpreende o visitante pela beleza interior. A sua inauguração ocorreu no dia 1 de Junho de 2000, sendo assinalado também neste dia, o Dia do Concelho de Palmela. Atualmente reconvertida em ponto de informação enoturística, a Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos assume-se como central de reservas para visitas guiadas nas adegas e a outros locais como os centros de artesanato, queijarias, património edificado ou atividades como observação de golfinhos ou passeios de barco pelo Sado. A Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos funciona também como loja dos vinhos da Península de Setúbal que, além de praticar preços de adega, é possível adquirir e degustar o melhor desta região vinícola. Sugestão: Som do encher de copos de vinho A Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos tem também para oferecer uma diversidade de produtos regionais de qualidade, como uma variedade de pastéis e bolos deliciosos, compotas e geleias de frutas, manteiga de ovelha e queijo de Azeitão, mel e chás biológicos. Este é o local ideal para saborear uma Fogaça de Palmela e deliciar-se com um Moscatel de Setúbal, mas não lhe falta alternativas como os gelados artesanais com os sabores típicos da região: da fogaça à maçã riscadinha. Quando terminar de provar as iguarias da região, retome o passeio com a visita ao edifício em frente, o Cineteatro S. João. POI #31 – Cineteatro S. João – Exterior – Voz Mulher O Cineteatro S. João foi mandado construir por Humberto da Silva Cardoso, antigo Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Palmela e importante lavrador desta região. Desenhado pelo arquiteto Willy Braun e pelo engenheiro Pedro Cavallieri Rodrigues Martinho, inaugurou no dia 26 de Julho de 1952 e foi considerada uma das melhores casas de espetáculos fora de Lisboa e do Porto. Este ex-libris de Palmela foi inaugurado a 26 de Julho de 1952, com o filme “As Aventuras de D. Juan” e a revista alemã “Que pernas ela tem”. Para além do cinema, o público podia assistir também a teatro, espetáculos de música e bailes. Fechou em 1981, mas foi reaberto em 1991 pela Câmara Municipal de Palmela, assegurando que aqui continuam a acontecer variadas iniciativas de âmbito cultural. Não deixe de assistir a um dos muitos espetáculos de dança, música, teatro ou outra forma de arte que aqui sobem ao palco. Convidamos a conhecer o interior do Cineteatro S. João. POI #32 – Cineteatro S. João - Interior – Voz Homem O Cineteatro é um edifício harmonioso e espaçoso que se desenvolve em dois pisos e um terraço. É constituído por uma sala de espetáculos com 480 lugares, bar, camarins, zona de exposições e uma sala de projeção dos anos 50. Nos pormenores decorativos identificam-se velhas facetas do artesanato local, desde os portais, gradeamentos e lustres em ferro forjado à mão, aos azulejos hidráulicos até aos estuques dos tetos. Propomos a visita à sala de espetáculos que poderá ver exceto se estiverem a decorrer ensaios ou eventos. Peça aos funcionários do cineteatro para lhe fazer um pequeno circuito quer pelo andar inferior quer pelo andar superior no qual poderá visitar a exposição em vigor e a antiga sala de projeção. Sugestão: Som da bobine a passar nos filmes antigos… A visita à sala de projeção é imperdível uma vez que ainda hoje contempla as máquinas de projeção originais dos anos 50 com bobines, ex-libris deste cineteatro, que funcionavam inicialmente a carvão. Quando terminar a visita ao edifício, saia e suba a Rua Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral. POI #33 – Rua Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral – Voz Mulher/Voz Homem A Rua Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral também é conhecida pela Rua dos Aviadores. Estes aviadores realizaram a primeira travessia área do Atlântico Sul, ligando Lisboa ao Rio de Janeiro, ato que lhes valeu notoriedade internacional. Sugestão: Som das hélices dos aviões Volte à direita na Travessa Olivença e repare nas casas que encontra à sua esquerda, com painéis azulejares no topo com motivos agrícolas. Circunde o quarteirão e retome à Rua dos Aviadores. Utilize o mapa como suporte à identificação do nome das ruas, sempre que necessário. Na primeira metade do século XX, Palmela produziu bastantes uvas e vinho, ganhando importância económica. Há mais gente, mais dinheiro e a vila transforma-se. Os lavradores mais importantes constroem as suas casas e adegas no centro da vila normalmente edifícios bastantes vistosos, quer em dimensão quer nos pormenores. Em terras abandonadas crescem novas casas e ruas, assim como adegas. Enquanto sobe a rua, repare nas grandes casas que encontra todas elas com uma característica comum: um grande portão. Sugestão: Som das carroças a passar na calçada Estas casas, pertença de famílias com quintas agrícolas fora da vila, tinham uma adega privada pelo que o portão servia para entrarem as carroças com as colheitas. Se encontrar algum portão aberto pode ainda hoje deslumbrar grandes pipas de vinho. Não entre, trata-se de propriedade privada. Continue a subir a rua até à porta N.º 78, na qual encontrará a Adega Assis Lobo. As visitas guiadas à adega funcionam por reserva prévia, podendo fazer provas de vinhos ou adquirir vinho a preços de produtor. POI #34 – Casa Agrícola Assis Lobo – Voz Mulher A viticultura desde sempre foi sustento na família e em 1951 foi construída a adega na vila de Palmela. Nessa altura, a produção estava orientada para o negócio a granel, assentando essencialmente na casta Castelão. Contudo, nas últimas décadas e face às novas tendências de consumo, tanto a nível nacional como a nível internacional, um novo ciclo se iniciou na Casa Agrícola Assis Lobo. Numa primeira fase, a vinha foi reestruturada com as castas adequadas, atendendo às características dos solos e clima da Península de Setúbal, de forma a obter um estilo de vinho que associa a preferência dos consumidores com a tipicidade da região. Ao nível da transformação foi concluído em Fernando Pó um novo centro de vinificação adaptado às exigências tecnológicas atuais. Sugestão: Som dos cânticos e sons da pisa do vinho Atualmente a Casa Agrícola Assis Lobo tem 60 hectares de vinha, compostos pelas mais diversas castas nacionais e internacionais e plantadas nas zonas mais nobres da região de Palmela. Continue a subir a rua até ao Largo 5 de Outubro. Aproxime-se do miradouro. POI #35 – Miradouro - Largo 5 de Outubro – Voz Homem/Voz Mulher No foral atribuído a Palmela por D. Afonso Henriques em, em 1185, há já referências a vinhas, terras de cultivo que ainda hoje marcam a paisagem. A vinha e o vinho são para Palmela um relevante fator económico – atualmente existem 10 mil hectares de vinha no concelho, repartidos por mais de mil viticultores -, mas também constituem uma permanência cultural, pois os seus cuidados impõem-se há séculos no quotidiano das gentes que trabalham a terra. É na freguesia do Poceirão, que daqui pode avistar, que as vinhas se apresentam em toda a sua plenitude; aí o horizonte é marcado pelo toque entre o verde da vinha e os tons do céu. Sugestão: Som da “foice” a cortar a cortiça e a retirar a cortiça do sobreiro A mancha de montado de sobreiros da freguesia de S. Pedro de Marateca também daqui se avista. A proteção de sobreiros deve-se a razões económicas, ambientais e patrimoniais. Portugal é o maior produtor mundial de cortiça e os montados de sobreiros constituem ecossistemas florestais mediterrânicos muito ricos em biodiversidade. Neste Largo encontra a sede de uma das coletividades centenárias de Palmela, a Sociedade Filarmónica Palmelense – Os Loureiros, a outra encontra-se um pouco mais abaixo, a Sociedade Filarmónica Humanitária. Em ambas as coletividades existem várias atividades de âmbito cultural, com o seu ponto forte na área do ensino da música, e desportivo. Siga agora até à Praça Duque de Palmela. Desça inicialmente a Rua Serpa Pinto e depois através da Rua Elias Garcia aceda à Praça Duque de Palmela através de umas escadas, aonde encontrará o Pelourinho e a Igreja da Misericórdia. Utilize o mapa como suporte à identificação do nome das ruas, sempre que necessário. POI #36 – Pelourinho – Voz Homem Na Praça Duque de Palmela, de traça medieval, ergue-se o Pelourinho, datado de 1645 com as Armas Reais de D. João IV, encimados pela Coroa Real, sendo esta a marca do período pós-Restauração da Independência de Castela. Construído em calcário, possui uma plataforma octogonal com três degraus, sendo o fuste cilíndrico e liso com um capitel decorado com folhas acânticas, encimadas por óvulos, do qual saem quatro ganchos de ferro com motivos zoomórficos. O Pelourinho era essencialmente um símbolo do poder e da autonomia municipal que simboliza a justiça local, que muitas vezes aí era ministrada. Sugestão: Som de comunicações/sentenças num pelourinho na idade média Era aqui colocada informação importante para a população e era onde eram feitos anúncios. Era também aqui que alguém que cometesse um crime era castigado publicamente. A revolução Liberal considerou os pelourinhos um símbolo de opressão e muitos foram destruídos, não tendo escapado o de Palmela. O monumento atual foi depois reconstruído em Fevereiro de 1907, aquando da restauração de Palmela a concelho. Na Praça Duque de Palmela podemos ainda encontrar a Igreja da Misericórdia. POI #37 – Igreja da Misericórdia – Voz Mulher A Igreja da Misericórdia de fachada caiada com barra amarela, portal emoldurado a cantaria e encimado por um janelão retangular, é um edifício setecentista de uma nave única com azulejos do século XVII, e apresenta teto de três planos de madeira pintada. Esta igreja normalmente encontra-se encerrada ao público. Ao lado da Igreja, encontra-se o antigo Hospital do Espírito Santo, integrado na Misericórdia e provavelmente seu antecedente, cujo atual edifício data do século XVIII. A Misericórdia foi instituída em Palmela no ano de 1512 “para auxilio no corpo e no espírito dos necessitados” tendo a sua igreja sido construída. Nesta Praça, assim como em todo o Centro Histórico, o movimento era grande. Aqui existia uma importante zona comercial. Sugestão: Som de mercado/vendas Todos os dias era necessário abastecer a casa de produtos que eram comprados no comércio local: drogarias, carvoarias, mercearias, talhos, padarias e oficinas dos mais variados ofícios (latoarias, ferradores, sapateiros, costureiras). Siga agora para o Largo do Município aonde encontrará os Paços do Município e a Igreja Matriz. POI #38 – Paços do Concelho – Voz Homem Este edifício de 2 pisos, data do século XVII. Desde que foi construído são-lhe conhecidas diversas utilizações. Aqui já funcionou um tribunal, uma prisão e até um talho, antes de deter funções de caracter político-administrativo. Atualmente é a sede do Município de Palmela, denominado por Paços do Concelho. O atual Salão Nobre foi usado como tribunal no séc. XVIII, atesta esta função as pinturas no teto de masseira, nomeadamente a Balança – símbolo de justiça -, e o Espelho, símbolo da verdade nas declarações. No salão nobre com o teto e as paredes pintados, pode encontrar ainda os retratos dos reis portugueses, desde o Conde D. Henrique (pai do primeiro Rei de Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques) até D. Manuel I, 14º rei português. D. Manuel I, cognominado O Bem-Aventurado, pois prosseguiu as explorações portuguesas iniciadas pelos seus antecessores, o que levou à descoberta do caminho marítimo para a Índia, do Brasil e das ambicionadas "ilhas das especiarias", as Molucas, determinantes para a expansão do império português. Foi o primeiro rei a assumir o título de Senhor do Comércio, da Conquista e da Navegação da Arábia, Pérsia e Índia. Ainda no Largo do Município, encontra a Igreja de S. Pedro, igreja matriz de Palmela. POI #39 – Igreja Matriz de S. Pedro – Voz Mulher/Som Homem A origem da fundação da Igreja Matriz de S. Pedro é desconhecida, embora existam algumas referências documentais que referem o ano de 1320, pensa-se no entanto que a Igreja seja mais antiga. A campanha de obras do reinado de D João V foi motivada pela destruição do interior da igreja devido ao incêndio do dia 17 de Abril de 1713. Também o terramoto de 1755 destruiu a fachada principal, tendo-se prolongado a sua reconstrução até finais do século XVIII. Sugestão: Som da liturgia O interior da igreja é de três naves com colunas toscanas. Nas paredes, datado de século XVIII, existe um conjunto de notáveis azulejos historiados com cenas da vida de São Pedro. Na capela-mor, também revestida com azulejos, existe um admirável conjunto de telas setecentistas. No exterior, encontra-se uma fonte adossada a um muro lateral da igreja sendo construída em alvenaria e pedra. De construção simples e reduzida dimensão, apresenta uma bica e uma bacia recetora de água. As igrejas antigas eram construídas em locais altos para que pudessem estar bem sinalizadas e visíveis. Tinham torres, também estas altas para que o toque dos sinos se ouvisse ao longe. Os sinos tocavam por diferentes motivos: Assinalavam as horas, convidavam a rezar e informavam sobre o nascimento, casamento ou morte de alguém. Convidamos à entrada na igreja, na qual solicitamos que mantenha o silêncio. Finalmente, visite o Miradouro da Alameda D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, última paragem antes de voltar ao Castelo e terminar a sua visita. POI #40 – Miradouro da Alameda D. Nuno Álvares Pereira – Voz Mulher Deste ponto, virado para o Alentejo, ainda pode ver parte da mancha de vinha e de montado que faz parte do concelho de Palmela, junto ao estuário do rio Sado. Apreciar as vastas extensões de campos é contactar de perto com a identidade cultural de Palmela, profundamente ligada ao trabalho da terra. We invite you to visit Palmela’s historic centre and learn about its history, traditions and people. Inhabited since Prehistoric times due to its privileged and strategic location, Palmela holds remnants of the many cultures that resided here in the past. Palmela was founded by the Celts in 310 BC; however the name they gave it has long been lost in history. In 106 AD, the Romans rebuilt the city and called it ‘Little Palma’, its first known name. It was the battlefield for Christian conquest taking the town from the Moors, and King Afonso Henriques (Afonso I) granted Palmela’s first charter in 1185. However, the fact that Palmela Castle was chosen as the headquarters for the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword in 1443 which lasted for four centuries, has significantly shaped the town’s identity. It’s therefore not surprising that Palmela Municipality’s coat of arms features a cross in the shape of a sword, a symbol of the Order of Santiago (Saint James). Due to the great importance the Castle acquired over the years, it stands today rehabilitated and renovated in architectural terms. Discover the surrounding landscape and a collection of spaces that inspire long, timeless strolls. Let’s begin our visit through Palmela’s historic centre at its highest point: the Castle! POI #2 – Castle – Female Voice Construction of Palmela Castle dates back to the time of Arab rule. Palmela held an important strategic position as the Sado River used to run right up to the base of the hillside on which the Castle stands. In times of war, there wasn’t an enemy that went unseen, due to its towering position. In 1147, after the conquest of Lisbon, King D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, occupied Palmela. In order to prevent the Castle falling back under Moorish control, he ordered that it be rebuilt and extended and he gave the settlement to the knights of Santiago so that they could settle there and defend it. Palmela Castle was the headquarters of the Order of Saint James of the Sword until this ceased to exist in 1834. This Order consisted of groups of warrior monks, who in times of peace, were monks and in times of war, warriors. The espadatários, as they were known, were different to monks from other military orders, as in most cases, they could already be married or get married. The espadatários played an important role in the reconquests south of the Tagus River, most notably in the Baixa Alentejo and the Algarve. After taking over the Algarve in 1249, this military order lost their most important and initial goal – winning back the land/Palmela? from the Moors. Once inside the castle walls, let yourself embrace what it was like to be a true Knight of the Order of Saint James of the Sword or an enchanted Moorish maiden giving yourself to the call of History where you can hear whispers of another time in each stone… In the Praça de Armas, you can walk through the Museum’s galleries, room by room, and learn about the first inhabitants of these lands. POI #3 – Praça de Armas – Male Voice This Castle, or at least the site where it has been built, has drawn countless people throughout Portuguese history, to settle in this region. Artefacts discovered in archaeological excavations carried out in the area, testify to this fact. The Praça de Armas is made up of various archaelogical sites separated into different rooms. Remember the bravery of historic feats that took place at the Praça de Armas, walk through the Museum’s galleries and learn about the first inhabitants of these lands. These archaeological sites enable us to understand how occupation of the territory evolved, with remains ranging from Neolithic times, through to the Roman and Visigoth era and later Arab rule, which lasted for over 500 years. The Museum’s Archaeological Space is made up of six rooms; three of which are located on the northern side and are ‘musealized’. They hold the remains of medieval Muslim and Christian buildings, discovered in archaelogical digs. Archaeological finds, displayed in these rooms, allow us to reconstruct the everyday life of those that lived in the Castle in the Middle Ages: Muslim governors, the warrior monks of the Order of Santiago (Saint James) and their respective garrisons. When you leave room 5-6, head towards the great space on your right. In this square, you will find the great cistern, a viewpoint, an excavation site and a heliograph. Let’s start at the viewpoint. POI #4 – The Great Cistern and Viewpoint – Female Voice Palmela Castle is strategically situated on top of a hill, forming part of the Arrábida Natural Park, it offers stunning panoramic views to its visitors. Nowadays, the Castle no longer has a military and defence function, however, it still holds great importance as a monument. The far-reaching views that can be seen from Palmela Castle and its beautiful landscape are what draw visitors to this site. Palmela Castle commands magnificent views of the ancient town of Palmela and the city of Setúbal, of the Tagus and Sado Estuary Nature Reserves and the Arrábida Natural Park. Sugestion: Sound of the sea/waves From a military perspective, its location is deemed exceptionally strategic, as it is found between two rivers, the Sado and Tagus rivers, on a high, rocky escarpment. In the middle of this square, you can find a cistern also referred to as the ‘Great Cistern’, as out of all the cisterns in the Castle this one has the greatest capacity, and it still supplies water to the town of Palmela up until this very day. We’d like to set you a small challenge: Stop next to the cistern and listen. If you pay close attention you can actually hear the sound of water in the cistern. You can also find, in a corner of this square, more excavations and one of the Castle’s true treasures, the heliograph. POI #5 – Excavation Site – Male Voice Suggestion: Sounds of digging, hammers and similar objects Archaeological excavations carried out in Palmela Castle’s fortified ‘alcáçova’ or fortress have led to the discovery of the inside face of its early walls, and the successive repairs and modifications made to them from the 9th-10th century to the 17th century. This was one of the areas in the Castle that was dedicated to garrison life, where the ironwork particularly stands out. Associated with numerous iron slags, weapons, various metal artefacts and ceramic vessels, forging furnaces were recorded to exist in order to tune and preheat the metal before the final forging process. This activity appears to have started under Islamic rule (near the end of the 10th century, beginning of the 11th century) and continued throughout the 12th century. The time period that is best documented archaeologically in this section is the second half of the 12th century: everyday objects, indications of building and destruction give an insight to moments of peace and times of war of the first Portuguese settlements and of the brief Almohad settlement, the last Muslim clan to reside in the Castle. Behind the excavation sites, attached to the wall, you can see part of the old heliograph structure. POI #6 – Heliograph – Female Voice In 1885, a heliograph was installed at Palmela Castle for military use of optical telegraph transmissions, thereby establishing the military’s telegraph base at the Castle, where today’s museum stands to be exact, known as the “Radiotelegrapher House”. This was the last retransmitter post that the Armed Forces held in Palmela before moving it to the Arrábida mountain range in 1993. Didn’t quite catch what a heliograph was or how it worked? Here you can only see its support, but if you go up the steep steps on your left, over rooms 5-6 in the Praça de Armas, you can learn more at the Museum of Military Transmissions, open from 10:00-12:30 and from 14:00-18:00. POI #7 – Museum of Military Transmissions – Male Voice Since the Islamic period, Palmela Castle has always been an important territorial control and defence post, due to its geo-strategic location nestled between the Tagus and Sado rivers. In this towering room is the Museum of Military Transmissions. This space, known as the “Radiotelegrapher House”, was founded in memory of the military installations that were based at the Castle, between 1889 and 1990. Sugestão: Sound of messages being telegraphed…. The history of military transmission methods is outlined here. The exhibition – coming mainly from the Portuguese Armed Forces’ Weapon of Transmission Museum – includes a collection of replicas portraying physical and audio means of transmission, as well as visual and optical transmission (highlighting optical telegraphy), electrical and electronic means (telephone and telegraph material), instruction manuals, lines and measurements and trial material etc. The timeline ranges from the Islamic period to the Portuguese Colonial War. Look at the hundred year old telephone on the wall and there’s also a drawing that illustrates how the heliograph worked. Leave the Museum and go up now to the Castle’s highest point, on your right, the Keep-Tower, at an altitude of almost 274m. POI #8 – The Keep-Tower – Female / Male Voice This place is blessed by its natural surroundings and it is here that you can fully enjoy all of the landscapes that will astound you one by one on this journey. Try doing a 360º spin, it’s a truly extraordinary experience. The keep-tower has five sides and is crowned with battlements and torn by embrasures. It is the region’s highest point and was built on the orders of King Dinis, Portugal’s 6th king. Inside this formidable keep-tower, the Bishop of Évora, D. Garcia de Meneses, was imprisoned in the 15th century for conspiring against King João II. Here he died of venom, poisoned, in a cistern, better known as the dungeon, located on the lower floor of the keep-tower. Furthermore, during the crisis of sovereignty of 1383/85, the relatively well known ‘beacon incident’ took place, where great bonfires were lit at Palmela Castle on Constable D. Nuno Álvares Pereira’s orders in order to inform King João I of his presence and nearby support, when the King found himself surrounded, in Lisbon, by the Castilian army. The Castilian army was greater in number, but even so, they were still defeated at the Battle of Aljubarrota. Suggestion: Battle sounds with swords D. Nuno Álvares Pereira is considered to be the greatest Portuguese warrior of all time and a military genius. He commanded forces with fewer men than those of his opponents and he still won every battle he waged. He is the patron saint of Portugal’s Infantry. Return to the ground floor and head towards the Castle’s entrance, next to a well. POI #9 – Cistern – Female Voice The square, in front of St. Mary’s Church, corresponds to a cistern although you can only see a well here. Back in the old days, there was no running water so cisterns were very important, and for that reason, Palmela Castle has four. They acted as reservoirs collecting rain water, and all of the Castle’s inhabitants depended on them, especially if the Castle was besieged, that is to say, surrounded by enemies. Between the cistern and the keep-tower, on your right, are the ruins of St. Mary of the Castle/ St. Mary-in-the-Castle Church, which was ordered to be built in the 12th century by King Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king. It was the first parochial church to exist in Palmela and is one of the region’s oldest churches. You can access the ruins by using the metal platform or you can simply look at them from above. POI #10 – St. Mary of the Castle/ St. Mary-in-the-Castle Church – Male / Female Voice St. Mary of the Castle/ St. Mary-in-the-Castle Church, showing off its Renaissance style, was most probably built upon the ruins of the Muslim mosque that once stood here, after King Afonso Henriques took over the Castle, and consecrated it to the cult of the Virgin Mary. To be honest, there isn’t much left of the original church and you now see the works, additions and modifications made during the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1755, the so-called ‘Great Lisbon Earthquake’ that destroyed most of Lisbon, also affected Palmela, destroying this Church, only leaving its ruins, the vestry and some blue and yellow tiles from the 18th century that were typical of this time. The old vestry was restored in order to establish the Order of Santiago (St. James) Research Centre, where you can consult a wide range of documents about this Order. We invite you to visit this centre that is open from 9:00-13:00 and from 14:00-17:00. This part of the Castle has some trees and shrubs that are typical of Mediterranean countries, such as the cypress tree, pomegranate tree and Arrábida shrub. Continue on your visit along the Castle’s south side where you can find the Fort Commander’s House. Hermenegildo Brito Capelo, explorer, topographer and adventurer of African lands, was born at this Commander’s house on 4th February 1841. This historic figure became famous as he undertook the first land-crossing between Angola and Mozambique, at a time when many other Europeans were also adventuring on African soil, in an attempt to explore this continent that up until then had remained unknown and inhospitable. Now go up the stairs, to the left of the Commander’s House, and take the classic picture that newly-weds take when they get married in Palmela, at the window with a view of the city of Setúbal. After you’ve done that, go down the steps and carry on walking until you reach the South Terrace. POI #11 – South Patio – Male Voice Amongst the still and clear waters, golden sand, one of the largest dolphin pods in Europe and a bountiful Sierra full of life, the South patio or Low Viewpoint, as it was known by the monks of the Order of Santiago, offers views of the city of Setúbal, the Sado River estuary, the Troia peninsula, the Arrábida mountain range and the vast expanse of the Atlantic ocean. Palmela strikes its visitors at first sight with its beautiful landscapes and its far-reaching views. Between the mountains and the plain, your gaze loses itself in the never-ending horizon. A land of stark contrasts, the municipality of Palmela extends over nearly 460 km2, from the Arrábida Natural Park, a protected landscape since 1976, to the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, among hectares of grapevines and their hospitable peoples, between its millennial history and the comforts of metropolitan life. Arrábida breccia is extracted from the Arrábida Natural Park, and can be seen in D. Jorge’s mortuary chest in St. James’ Church. This rock is unique to the Arrábida mountains and prospecting was forbidden in order to avoid depletion of this natural resource. The south patio is bordered by D. Jorge’s Palace, where the last Grand Master of the Order of Santiago lived, between 1481 and 1550. This patio holds yet another object of interest, a sundial that can be seen on the Church’s wall. Can you find it? After going through the door, you will find on your left access to the inside of the Clock of St James’ Church and to the Reserve of “St. James’ Sculptures” which you can visit from 10:00-12:30 and from 14:00-18:00 by prior appointment only. POI #12 – Clock and Reserve of “St. James’ Sculptures” – Female Voice The Reserve of St. James’ Sculptures, which is open to the public, includes works from the old statuary - 15th, 16th and 17th centuries – in stone and wood, from different sculpture workshops. Here we can see the many ways of portraying St. James, the patron saint of the religious and military Order that was based at Palmela Castle from the 15th to 19th century. St. James was one of Jesus’ first disciples. You can see the saint’s traits in all of the sculptures that represent him: the hat, the cloak, the bag, the staff, the Book of the Gospels and the scallop, as well as a water container made of a calabash shell and the fact that he is always represented with bare feet. These are all considered to be attributes of St. James. Belonging to Lisbon’s National Museum of Ancient Art, this display is now found in Palmela’s Municipal Museum and is exhibited in one of the rooms of the so-called D. Jorge Palace and in the ‘Côro-Alto’ or upper choir of St. James’ Church. From the upper choir in St. James’ Church you have a spectacular view over the church, and sometimes you have to pay an entrance fee when there are certain exhibitions on. Now stand still for a moment and listen to the tick-tock of the clock… Follow the sound! Suggestion: Sound of tick-tock of old clocks This is your chance to see inside the clock at St. James’ Church. The bell tower’s clock has only one hand and dates back to 1752. It was made in Liège, in Henri Rossius’ workshop. Leave this museum now and head towards the entrance of St. James’ Church. POI #13 – St. James’ Church - Exterior – Male Voice St. James’ Church was the place of worship for the warrior monks of the Order of Santiago. It was here that they prayed and sang their hymns. The main architectural features of St. James’ Church are its silhouette crowned by battlements, the round window above the main entrance door and its bell tower. At the front of St. James’ Church, you can see the main entrance door that presents an ogee arch made up of four slim archivolts and on their base, a scallop is discreetly positioned, a symbol of the monument’s and the Military Order of Santiago’s patron saint, as its last headquarters were centred here. Today, St. James’ Church is used as an exhibition hall and you can appreciate a wide range of exhibitions of a varied nature, classical music concerts, to name but a few of the dynamic events that are held within this space. We would like to invite you to see the inside of the Church, which is normally free except for when there are specific exhibitions being held. POI #14 – St. James’ Church - Interior – Female / Male Voice St. James’ Church is a place of worship which was built at the end of the Gothic era. The building has a rectangular base and is divided into three naves, where you can see the remains of decorative blue and white tiles from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as the characteristic ogee arches. The upper choir stands above the Church entrance and it was from here that the monks used to sing during religious services. Suggestion: Sound of Gregorian hymns Above the side door to the north of the Church, there is a small starry vault, decorated with frescoes, whose bolt stones have sculpted figures relating to the legend of St. James and his attributes. On the ground of the central nave, there are many tombstones made of stone. There lie the tombs of the most distinguished noblemen connected to the Order of Santiago. In the left nave, before you reach the chancel, you can see D. Jorge de Lencastre’s mortuary chest, who died in 1550, the bastard son of King João II and the last Grand Master of the Order of Santiago before it was integrated into the Portuguese crown. In the chancel, above the high altar, you can see a replica of the Altarpiece depicting the life and work of St. James and, on your right, another replica of a Gothic high relief from the 14th century entitled “Santiago fighting the Moors”. The round window and Gothic openings provide the Church with natural light, a soft light that deepens the space and its mystery. Leave the church now and head towards the building that now acts as a Tourist ‘Pousada’ or Hotel, the Order of Santiago’s last convent. This is your best chance to see the clock’s hand, on the north front of St. James’ Church. POI #15 – Palmela Pousada (exclusive historic hotel) – Female Voice The old Convent of the Order of Santiago, where the monks used to sleep, pray, study and eat, has now been converted into a Tourist Pousada. This conversion took place in 1970. Suggestion: Sound of liturgy given in LATIN The monk warriors of Santiago moved into Palmela Castle in the 12th century, but it was during the rule of King João I, in the 15th century, that the convent was built – the headquarters of this important religious-military Order. This building was reconstructed, extended and restored up until the 19th century. We recommend going into the Pousada to visit the cloisters and the Pátio do Pessegueiro viewpoint or to simply drink a glass of moscatel de Setúbal at its bar. You can also spend a night at this fascinating and classy place and enjoy a beautiful lunch or dinner in what used to be the old refectory of the monks of the Order of Santiago. In this original refectory, you can marvel at the pulpit from where prayers were made at the beginning of every meal. After your visit, leave the Pousada but before you start your descent down the hill to the historic centre, take a moment to admire the landscape north of the Castle. POI #16 – North Viewpoint next to the Pousada’s car park – Male Voice From this viewpoint, on the north border of the Tagus river’s immense basin, you can see Lisbon – Portugal’s capital city – and the two bridges that connect it to the Setúbal Peninsula: upstream you have the 25 de Abril bridge, named in honour of the Revolution in 1974 and downstream (to the northeast) you have the Vasco da Gama bridge; this bridge was named after the famous maritime explorer who discovered the sea route to India and was also a knight of the Order of Santiago. The town of Palmela lies at your feet. Lose yourself in the history of Palmela, among its old and newly paved streets and alleyways, and discover every corner and hidden treasure that the historic centre has to offer you. Go up or down the steps that take you to the viewpoints, to small squares and admire the buildings here. Walk between the white houses, outlined in grey and other colours, reminiscent of the geography in the South, mixed with cultures from different lands, where the local cats adopted by the neighbourhood stretch themselves out on the pavement and play freely. Start your descent down towards the historic centre by leaving through the Castle’s main entrance, the so-called ‘false gate’. Make a stop at the Venâncio Ribeiro da Costa Park. If you brought a picnic with you, this is the perfect spot for it! You can access the park via the stairs, right next to the number P5 bus stop. POI #17 – Venâncio Ribeiro da Costa Park – Female / Male Voice Go down the steps and immerse yourself in the green and tranquility… Close your eyes and take in the smells… in order to contemplate each and every one of the garden’s beauties. Follow the arrows with the “AudioTour” symbol throughout the park. Suggestion: Sound of birds chirping The Venâncio Ribeiro da Costa Park is a place of leisure par excellence for the inhabitants of Palmela. Every season brings different colours, sounds and smells. A place of great scenic beauty, the park links the Castle to the Historic Centre and still maintains its romantic features that once gave it life in the second half of the 20th century, as well as its bushy vegetation where some autochthonous species particularly stand out, such as the oak tree and the Portuguese oak as well as others that come from a wide range of lands, such as the sycamore and tree fern. The autochthonous species are marked with big red stakes, but if you find a yellow one, this means that the plant is not autochthonous, that is to say, it is not native to the region. The park has an amphitheatre, children’s playground, communal garden with plots for growing vegetables, a jogging track, picnic area and multifunctional equipment. It is where Palmela’s residents come daily and share the space with visitors and tourists that pass by. The old Windmill and other buildings are now restored and receive youth groups that have also revitalised small vegetable-gardens. Suggestion: Sound of children playing in the park or in the picnic area Since the park was opened, many people come here to relax and to share moments of peace. In the old days, many families spent their Sundays here setting up lively picnics, a tradition that is coming back to life. On the first Monday following Easter Sunday, Picnic Day is celebrated and a huge annual picnic is held. Please leave the park now and enter the labyrinth of houses in Palmela’s Historic Centre. Go down Rua Heliodoro Salgado until you find some stairs on your right which give access to Largo da Boavista. Use the map as a support tool to identify street names, whenever necessary. In the meantime, we’re going to give you a short presentation on Palmela’s Historic Centre. POI #18 – Palmela’s Historic Centre – Female Voice As the Castle became more and more consolidated and as it expanded from Islamic medieval times, but mostly during the Christian medieval and Modern eras, the Historic Centre has evolved its twisted shape along the hillside. The houses and streets of Palmela’s Historic Centre have grown over time. It’s geographical location and the town’s use of the construction materials that became available over the years, have created a truly unique space where you can now discover: streets, squares, alleyways, roads, houses, porches and windows., Situated on the Castle’s northern slope, the people of Palmela concentrated urban growth in the lower areas, yet still close enough to be protected by this monument. Everything you see tells us about time. About a time that, although it’s already passed by, will forever remain imprinted on every stone of every house, street and in the memory of the town’s people. On your right, you’ll find some steps which give access to Largo da Boavista. To the left of these steps, you can admire a sequence of tiles designed and painted by Andreas Stocklein in 1989, representing the Four Seasons. POI #19 – Largo da Boavista – Male / Female Voice From the viewpoint at Boavista, behold the kind of roof that the houses in Palmela have, the so-called “hipped roofs” which are fundamentally characterised by the fact that each roof, with four sides, corresponds to each partition, and therefore each house has the same number of roofs as they do partitions. From this viewpoint, you can also catch a glimpse of the Arrábida Natural Park. The Palmela Philharmonic Society “Loureiros” had its first base on Largo da Boavista, founded in October 1852. The building has an imposing façade, two floors and hipped roofs, most probably from the 18th century, as well as a row of balconies on the top floor; however their wrought iron grilles only date back to the 19th century, when the façade was extended to include a plat-band with white porcelain balustrades. Suggestion: Sound of preparing cement and plastering walls… construction work In contrast with this building, which follows the traditional architectural style, although they used non-traditional building materials when rebuilding it, is another building that is visually striking to the eye as it is very different to the houses of Palmela in architectural terms, a muddy colour, and in whose construction they sought to reuse the materials formerly used when constructing the town’s houses. Now go up Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque and we’re going to give you a small challenge… lose yourself in these streets for a few minutes… go around the blocks on your right, or your left, but make sure you come back to this street, Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque, so we can carry on our journey. Use the map as a support tool to identify street names, whenever necessary. At the end of this street, Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque, you will find the Terraço do Mercado or Market Terrace. POI #20 – Terraço do Mercado – Female / Male Voice In this square, you can see the houses’ picturesque façades, some of which date back to the 19th century. Here you can find details such as the hipped roofs; a wrought iron porch in the shape of a heart, at house number 2 and 4; a façade with double eaves and a plat-band with white and blue mortar circles at house number 62. Inside Palmela’s Municipal Market, archaeological excavations undertaken here by the Town Council in 2002, have revealed to us what it was like to live in the medieval town of Palmela in the 14th and 15th centuries: imported ceramic objects were found from Aragon and Castilla, from the Muslim kingdom of Granada and the Italian Republics, as well as local products with Muslim influence; from the food remains that were found and identified, we now know that people of the 14th and 15th centuries used to eat boar, deer, cow, goat, sheep, rabbit, rooster, whelks, mussels, oysters, some kind of clam and they used lynx and wildcat fur when making handmade goods and crafts. Whilst you’re here at the Municipal Market, we invite to buy some of the region’s typical produce, especially its fruit and horticultural products. Suggestion: Sound of the market in action The region of Palmela is made up of vast expanses of farmland with high levels of production and high quality products. Try the ‘riscadinha’ apple, Palmela’s most typical fruit. It is harvested throughout the summer months, especially in July and August, and you can also try the delicious jams that are made from it. Palmela’s high quality grapes are also worth a special mention, as they make the region’s reputation in wine-growing nationwide. In the Largo do Mercado or Market Square you can still find some of the town’s classic shops, what is called ‘traditional trade’. Go back to Rua Hermenegildo Capelo. At no. 52 you can experience what a true Palmela bar is like. Ask for a ‘copo de 3’ (cup of three) or just sit back, relax and take in the atmosphere. POI #21 – Typical Bar – Female Voice Have you discovered what a cup of three is yet?! If you haven’t, we’ll let you in on the secret: it’s a glass with 3 fingers worth of red wine! Suggestion: Background sounds at a café, dishes and a lively card game, for example We hope that you still have your sense of direction about you as we’re going to need your close attention for the next set of instructions. Go back onto Rua Hermenegildo Capelo, turn right onto Rua 31 de Janeiro, go down the steps on Rua Coronel Galhardo, turn right onto Rua do Passadiço and, finally, turn left to reach Largo Marquês de Pombal. Lost? Confused? Not to worry! Follow the route on your map until you find Largo Marques de Pombal. You’ll find this small must-see square we promise! POI #22 – Largo Marquês de Pombal – Male Voice It was only at the beginning of the Portuguese Republic that this square was given the name ‘Marquês de Pombal’, up until 1911, it had always been called Largo de S. Sebastião Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Count of Oeiras and better known as the ‘Marquês de Pombal’, was the Kingdom’s Secretary of State, the equivalent to today’s prime minister, during the reign of King José I. He was one of the most controversial and charismatic figures in Portuguese History. Controversial, for example, for expelling the Jesuits from Portugal, and charismatic for having been a great influence in the reconstruction of downtown Lisbon, after the Great Earthquake of 1755. Suggestion: Sound of water flowing at a fountain In the middle of the square, you can see a fountain. This fountain, obelisk-like, its date of construction unknown, is made of stone and has a robust form. Its base has two water faucets and two basins while at the top, there is an iron structure that holds up four lamps. This type of Fountain, standing alone and placed in the centre of squares, became commonplace in the 19th century. Now turn to your left and walk along Rua Almirante dos Reis until you reach the viewpoint at Largo do Terreiro. POI #23 – Terreiro Viewpoint – Female / Male Voice From this courtyard, facing the Arrábida Natural Park, we can see the Vale dos Barris surrounded by the Gaiteiros mountain range, with the Arrábida and S. Luís mountain ranges behind you, and the Louro and S. Filipe mountain ranges in the southwest. It’s worth highlighting the rugged landscape and rich plant diversity that the Vale dos Barris provides, creating a mosaic effect of plains, olive groves, woods and forests. In the jurassic Vale dos Barris, a reddish-brown chalky “earth” is predominant and was industrially exploited in the past. These jurassic shapes, essentially made up of limestone, loam and sandstone, are some of the region’s oldest geological formations. Suggestion: Sound of a millstone spinning and stirring in water, as if it were going to make 1 piece Therefore, making tiles is a popular craft and is still practiced in the region. Why don’t you visit the Espaço Fortuna? It’s only a stone’s throw away from Palmela and invites you to experience the tradition of clay work, an ancient art form that gives shape to the history of its people, a testimony to their past, giving expression to their culture. From the kiln to painting, as small pieces or as great sequences, every tile is unique because it’s born out of the craftsman’s mystery and strength. Meanwhile, carry on your journey and turn left onto Rua de Santa Ana until you reach the Lavadouro de Santa Ana (public wash-house). Use the map as a support tool to identify street names, whenever necessary. POI #24 – Lavadouro de Santa Ana – Female Voice This wash-house, dating back to the 19th century, is made up of two stone tanks, one big one and another smaller one, used for washing clothes. Today, it still serves the same purpose and, in the summer, it’s common for people to come and wash their large rugs. There is a stone table on display with Latin inscriptions, dated 1827. There is also a protective structure made of brick and wood. Before there was running water, women – aguadeiras – would go to wells and fountains to fetch water to sell. Donkeys were used to help them carry the water pitchers. Suggestion: Sound of washerwomen singing, whilst they work in the water and beat clothes on stone… Whilst working, the washerwomen would take advantage and talk. In the summer, lots of children came here too to have fun and bathe! And while they waited for their turn to fill the pitchers, boys and girls began to date. Go back to Rua Hermenegildo Capelo and continue on your journey. If it’s open, we recommend that you make a quick stop at the small functioning adega or wine-cellar in the town’s historic centre: the Adega Xavier Santana. POI #25 – Adega Xavier Santana – Male Voice Established in 1926 by Xavier Santana, the company kept his name until the 1970s when it became a family business and was renamed Xavier Santana Sucessores. The business’ commercial activity was originally centred around bulk wine production and commercialisation as well as the preparation of olives. In 1990, a niche in the market led the company to invest in bottling wine, in an attempt to increase company growth on different levels, supported by an exceedingly high relationship between its products’ quality and price. Today, the wine-cellar has a large hall where wine-tasting and other unique events are held. Guided tours of the cellar must be pre-booked. On your way down Largo de S. João Baptista, you will visit the Casa Mãe Rota dos Vinhos of Setúbal’s Peninsula where you can find every different bottle of wine that has been produced at this adega and within the region. Go back onto Rua Hermenegildo Capelo and walk down until you reach Largo do Chafariz D. Maria I. Head towards the Fountain of D. Maria I, on your right. POI #26 – Fountain of Queen Maria I – Female / Male Voice The first fountain to stand here dates back to 1549, built by order of D. Jorge de Lencastre, Grand Master of the Order of Santiago. According to the front inscription, it was restored and remodelled in 1792, during the reign of Queen Maria I. It was an important meeting point, where both people and animals came to quench their thirst and where the town’s inhabitants filled up on their supply of water for everyday needs, in a constant and tiring to and fro. Queen Maria I was the first woman to wear the Portuguese crown, between 1777 and 1816, and was nicknamed “The Piedosa” or pious one. She created a number of cultural and art institutions and gave approval for the Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa (Lisbon Holy House of Mercy) to conduct a Lottery to benefit the royal hospital and the poor and also founded the Real Casa Pia de Lisboa, which upholds its mission of integrating children and teenagers, namely those that lack an appropriate family nucleus, and providing them with inclusive education courses. Suggestion: Sound of break time and children laughing Queen Maria I rebuilt the fountain in line with the fashion aesthetic at that time, Baroque scenography, with fogaréus on top of the whole building, that also displays the town’s coat of arms and weapons. In 1953, Palmela’s piped water network was created. The fountain’s spouts were substituted by faucets, an advantage that slowly came into every household. If you’re thirsty, this is the best place to quench your thirst. Suggestion: Sound of water spouting out of a fountain If you prefer wine, we are almost at the Casa Mãe Rota dos Vinhos. Walk in front of the Fountain of Queen Maria I and continue walking along the road until you come across some steps on your right-hand side. Go up these steps and then walk through the Joaquim José Carvalho Garden until you reach the Viewpoint on your left, in Largo de S. João Baptista. Meanwhile, we’re going to tell you a little bit about one of Palmela’s most typical sweets: the Fogaça de Palmela! POI #27 – Fogaça de Palmela – Female Voice Bread dough, Portuguese yellow soft sugar, flour, lard, eggs, oranges, aguardente, cinnamon and fennel seeds: these are the ingredients used to make one of Palmela’s trademark sweets. After mixing and kneading all of the ingredients together, it’s time to cut the mixture into doll-like shapes, they are then decorated and covered with beaten egg before putting them in the oven to cook. Traditionally, the fogaças were made just after the town’s main festival and pilgrimage, in order to raise the funds necessary to cover the expenses of the main festival. The origin of these cakes called fogaças, initially arose because these cakes were cooked directly on the fire or, to be more exact, on top of the embers of a fireplace or oven. Suggestion: Sound of beating the cake mixture The most important date is the 15th January, when the town celebrates the Festival of Santo Amaro. On this day, the fogaças are blessed at the parochial church and each one corresponds to a promise made to this Saint. Depending on the problem faced by the person making the promise, the fogaças are cut in different forms but, whatever the case might have been, they all related to pain: a foot, an arm, an animal, a bunch of grapes etc. The money made on the sale of the fogaças goes back to the cult of Santo Amaro. If you already went up to the Joaquim José Carvalho Garden, then turn left and you’ll find the viewpoint. Use the map as a support tool to identify street names, whenever necessary. POI #28 – Viewpoint – Male Voice You’re standing in the Arrábida Natural Park, in front of you, you can see the Gaiteiros, S. Luís, Arrábida, S. Francisco, do Louro mountain ranges with their windmills. Suggestion: Sound of wind engine and of a millstone grinding grains Located high up on the Louro mountains, the windmills are observant witnesses of both history and time, they linger in your gaze and enrich your imagination. You can still sometimes hear the sound of wind passing through the engines, entering momentarily through their blades. The windmills found in the Palmela Municipality are mostly found in the Louro mountains, namely in the towns of Palmela and Quinta do Anjo. They have had a significant impact on the history of grain, and bread within the region over the many centuries of their existence. To the west, you can still see the parish of Quinta do Anjo, a land of shepherds and cheesemakers. Suggestion: Sound of sheep bells Let your gaze wander among the mountains, valleys and dramatic outlines, to the sounds of bells that announce, in the distance, herds of sheep, typical of the region, that come to graze here. Baptised the “Serra Mãe” (a name given to the Arrábida mountains by the Azeitão poet, Sebastião Da Gama), it was once a candidate for World Heritage Status and it holds one of the region’s greatest emblems: the unrivalled Azeitão cheese, which the majority of traditional cheesemakers produce in the village of Quinta do Anjo. You are now standing on top of the exact spot where the town’s oldest human settlement once stood, and the town of Casal da Cerca dates back to the end of the 6th century and the beginning of the 5th century B.C. Maybe it’s because of this that you’ve now arrived at one of Palmela’s most important Squares: the Largo de S. João Baptista. POI #29 – Largo de S. João Baptista – Female / Male Voice The Largo de S. João Baptista is considered to be the centre of Palmela’s town. Here you can find many different and charismatic pieces of infrastructure. Why don’t you sit down on a bench and we will describe to you what you are looking at. - The first building on your left is the Municipal Library which was opened here in 2002 and permanent art exhibitions are also located here. This building, which was originally built in the first half the 20th century, used to be the old S. João Primary School, and the residents of Palmela contributed to buying its construction materials and furniture. - In its centre, you can see a bandstand that gives the square a certain romantic charm. Designed by Salvador Augusto Camolas, it was built by the Humanitarian Philharmonic Society in 1924 so that the Band could play here, thereby revealing the great importance music has always had for the town of Palmela. Suggestion: Sounds of a philharmonic orchestra playing - The Chapel of S. João Baptista is the square’s religious component, a temple of the Order of Malta, which was built in the second half of the 17th century. Its architecture is simple, however, it is a protected landmark and was classified as a Monument of Municipal Value in 1997. Religious services have not been held here since 1910. - In the summer, the winery Casa Mãe da Rota dos Vinhos of Setúbal’s Peninsula usually sets up a terrace here, which we will shortly tell you about and is definitely worth a visit. - In front of the Casa Mãe Rota dos Vinhos is the S. João Cine-Theatre, a building from the ‘50s and of great architectural beauty, which we will tell you about later. Suggestion: Sounds of a party followed by fireworks In September, the Festas das Vindimas (or Grape Harvest Festival) are held here at Largo de S. João Baptista, renowned throughout the country where Wine is king and it marks one of the most importante times for the Wine Industry, the Grape Harvest. POI #30 – Casa Mãe da Rota dos Vinhos – Female / Male Voice The Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos of Setúbal’s Peninsula is an adaptation of a 1940s wine-cellar, seeking to maintain its more traditional adega characterics. This building strikes visitors with its beautiful interior. It was opened on the 1st June 2000, the same day that o Dia do Concelho de Palmela or ‘Palmela Municipality Day’ is celebrated. It’s now been reconverted into a tourist information centre. Nowadays, the Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos acts as a booking centre for cellar tours and for guided visits of other places of interest such as its handicraft centres, cheese factories, built heritage sites and other activities such as dolphin watching boat trips or cruises along the Sado river. The Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos also serves as the Setúbal Peninsula’s official wine shop where you can not only buy wine at its wholesale price, but you can also purchase and try some of the best wines in the region. Suggestion: Sound of pouring wine into glasses The Casa Mãe da Rota de Vinhos also has a wide selection of high quality products from the region on offer, such as a variety of delicious pastries and cakes, fruit compotes and jams, sheep milk butter and Azeitão cheese, as well as honey and organic teas. Try one of their tasting menus and enjoy the best of what the region has to offer gastronomically in their outdoor space, the wine lounge terrace, that is a wonderful place to sit back and enjoy yourself. There isn’t a better place to try a Fogaça de Palmela with a glass of Moscatel de Setúbal than right here, although you’re really spoilt for choice as they also have handmade ice creams with some of the region’s most celebrated flavours: from fogaça to ‘riscadinha’ apple. When you’ve finished trying these wonderful regional delicacies, continue on with your tour and visit the building in front, the S. João Cine-theatre. POI #31 –S. João Cine-Theatre – Exterior – Voz Mulher The S. João Cine-theatre was built on the orders of Humberto da Silva Cardoso, former President of Palmela’s Town Hall and an important farmer in the region. Designed by the architect Willy Braun and engineer Pedro Cavallieri Rodrigues Martinho, it was inaugurated on the 26th July 1952 and was considered to be one of the best venues outside of Lisbon and Porto. Palmela’s trademark was opened to the public on the 26th July 1952, with the film “The Adventures of D.Juan” and the German magazine “Que pernas ela tem”. In addition to cinema, audiences can see theatre shows, concerts and dance shows. It closed its doors in 1981, but was then reopened in 1991 by Palmela’s Town Hall, thereby ensuring that various cultural initiatives continue to perform here. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see one of the many dance, music or theatre shows put on stage. Now let’s go and see the inside of the S. João Cine-theatre. POI #32 –S. João Cine-Theatre- Interior – Male Voice The Cine-theatre is a beautifully-proportioned and spacious building that spans across two floors and a terrace. It has an auditorium which seats up to 480 people, a bar, dressing rooms, exhibition hall and a 1950s projection room. You can see old remnants of local craftsmanship in decorative details on doorways, grilles and hand-wrought iron chandeliers, on handmade tiles and even on the stuccos on the roof. , We recommend that you visit the auditorium that can usually be seen unless there are rehearsals or events taking place. Please ask one of the cine-theatre’s employees to give you a small tour around the lower and upper floors where you will also be able to see the current exhibition on and the old projection room. Suggestion: Sound of film reels spinning and playing old films… Do not miss out on the opportunity to visit the old projection room as you can still see the original projectors used in the 1950s with reels of film, a trademark of this cine-theatre, that originally operated on coal. When you have finished visiting this building, please leave it behind and go up Rua Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral. POI #33 – Rua Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral – Female / Male Rua Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral is also known as “Rua dos Aviadores” or ‘Pilot Street’. These two pilots were the first to ever cross the South Atlantic, connecting Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, a successful endeavour that immediately gave them worldwide fame. Suggestion: Sound of aeroplane propellers Turn to your right onto Travessa Olivença and look at the houses on your left, with tile panels at the top of them with agricultural motifs. Walk around the block and go back onto Rua dos Aviadores. Use the map as a support tool to identify street names, whenever necessary. In the first half of the 20th century, Palmela produced a vast quantity of grapes and wine, gaining significant economic importance. There were more people, more money and the town radically transformed itself. Palmela’s most important farmers, built their houses and adegas (wine-cellars) in the town centre. These houses were generally quite ostentatious, both in size and their details. New houses and streets, as well as adegas, were built on previously abandoned land. As you go up the street, notice how all of these big houses share the same feature: a great entrance. Suggestion: Sound of carriages driving down the street These houses belonged to families with agricultural farms outside of town, however they had a private cellar and therefore, the entrance had to be big enough to allow a carriage to enter through the gate and drop off the harvest. If you pass by an open gate, you can still see big wine barrels shining in the sunlight. But remember, this is private property so please don’t go in. Continue walking up the street until you get to house number 78, where you will find the Adega Assis Lobo. Guided tours to the adega are by prior appointment only, and you can experience a wine-tasting or buy wine at producer prices. POI #34 –Assis Lobo Farmhouse – Female Voice Viticulture has always been a family affair and in 1951, this adega was built in the town of Palmela. At this time, production was geared towards bulk sales, focussing especially on the Periquita grape variety. However, in the last few decades and in face of new national and international consumer trends, a new cycle began at Assis Lobo Farmhouse. As part of phase one, the vineyards were restructured with the right grape varieties, according to the soil type and climate of the Setúbal Peninsula, in order to create a style of wine that combines consumer tastes with regional authenticity. Its transformation also led to the creation of Fernando Pó, a new wine-cellar that is adapted to the technological demands of today. Suggestion: Sound of chants and of wine being pressed Nowadays, the Assis Lobo Farmhouse extends over 60 hectares of vineyards, made up of the most diverse national and international varieties that are planted in Palmela’s most exclusive areas. Keep going up the street until you reach the Largo 5 de Outubro. Go to the viewpoint. POI #35 – Viewpoint - Largo 5 de Outubro – Male / Female Voice In the Charter of Palmela, granted by King Afonso Henriques in 1185, there are already references made to the grapevines and farmland that still mark the region’s landscape even today. The grapevine and wine are Palmela’s important economic players – there are currently 10,000 hectares of vineyards in the municipality, spread out among more than 1000 winegrowers -, but they are also a permanent cultural element, as their care has been imposed on the everyday reality of those that work the land for centuries. You can see the grapevines in their full glory in the parish of Poceirão; the horizon there is marked by the touch of grapevine green with the colours of the sky. Suggestion: Sound of a “sickle” cutting cork and removing it from the tree (stripping) You can also see spots of cork oaks on the hills of the parish of S. Pedro de Marateca. Protection of the cork oak is tied to economic, environmental and heritage issues. Portugal is the world’s largest producer of cork and the hills of cork oaks make up Mediterranean forest ecosystems rich in biodiversity. In this Square, you can see the headquarters of one of Palmela’s centenarian communities, Palmela’s Philharmonic Society – The Loureiros – and another community can be found a little lower down, the Humanitarian Philharmonic Society. Both societies offer various activities in the cultural sphere, their strength being music teaching and sports. Carry on your way now until you reach the Praça Duque de Palmela. Start by going down Rua Serpa Pinto and then by walking along Rua Elias Garcia where you then go up the stairs giving you access to the Praça Duque de Palmela,where you will find the Pillory and the Church of Misericórdia. Use the map as a support tool to identify street names, whenever necessary. POI #36 – The Pillory – Male Voice In the Praça Duque de Palmela, in true medieval style, stands the Pillory, dating back to 1645 along with King João IV’s royal weapons, topped by the Royal Crown, a symbol of Castile’s restoration of Independence. Built out of limestone, it has an octagonal platform with three steps, and a plain cylindrical shaft with a column decorated with acântica leaves, topped with eggs, out of which four iron hooks protrude with animal motifs. The Pillory was essentially a symbol of power and of the municipality’s independence which in turn symbolised local justice, which was administered here on many occasions. Suggestion: Sound of announcements/ sentences at the pillory in the Middle Ages Important information was placed here so that the people of Palmela could read it and announcements were also made from this spot. Those who committed crimes were also publicly punished here. The Liberal revolution considered the pillory to be a symbol of oppression and so many were destroyed, and the pillory here at Palmera was no exception. The monument you see today was later reconstructed in February 1907, when Palmela was returned to the municipality. Here at the Praça Duque de Palmela, you can still find the Church of Misericórdia. POI #37 – Church of Misericórdia – Female Voice The Church of Misericórdia, with its whitewashed front and yellow bar, entrance with a stonework frame and topped by a great big rectangular window, is a 17th century building with a single nave decorated with tiles also from the 17th century, and a roof with three layers of painted wood. This Church is normally closed to the public. Next to the Church, you can see the old Hospital do Espírito Santo, adjoined to the Misericórdia and probably its predecessor, although the actual building dates back to the 18th century. The Misericórdia was established in Palmela in 1512 “in order to help the body and spirit of those in need” and so its church was built. In this Square, just like in the rest of the Historic Centre, there was a lot of hustle and bustle as an important trade market used to be held here. Suggestion: Sound of market / sales It was necessary to stock up your house everyday with products that were bought from local businesses: the pharmacy, coal-pit, grocery store, butchers, bakery and other shops of the most diverse trades (tinsmiths, blacksmiths, cobbler, seamstress). Keep walking towards the Largo do Município where you will find the Town Hall and the main Church. POI #38 – Town Hall – Voz Homem This two-storey building dates back to the 17th century. Since its construction, it has served an array of different purposes. It used to be a Courthouse, a prison and even a butchers, before it gave up its political-administrative functions. Nowadays, it’s the headquarters of the Municipality of Palmela, called the Town Hall. Today’s Grand Hall was used as a courtroom in the 18th century and the paintings on its trough ceiling testify this; namely the Scales – symbol of justice -, and the Mirror, symbol of truth in testimonies. In the Grand Hall, you can still find portraits of the Portuguese kings on the painted walls and ceiling, from Count Henrique (father of Portugal’s first king, King Afonso Henriques) to D. Manuel I, Portugal’s 14th king. King Manuel I, nicknamed the Good-Adventurer, resumed Portuguese expeditions initiated by his predecessor, which led to the discovery of the sea route to India, from Brazil to the ambitious "Spice Islands", the Moluccas, all conducive to the expansion of the Portuguese Empire. He was the first king to hold the title ‘Head of Trade, Conquest and Navigation of Arabia, Persia and India’. You can still see the Church of S. Pedro in Largo do Município, Palmela’s main church. POI #39 – Main Church of S. Pedro (St. Peter’s Church) – Female / Male Voice The origins of Palmela’s main Church of S. Pedro are unknown, despite there being written references to it in 1320, however, it is still believed to be the oldest Church in the region. King João V’s campaign for construction was driven by the destruction of the church’s interior in the fire of 17th April 1713. The Great Earthquake of 1755 also destroyed its main façade, and reconstruction works lasted until the end of the 18th century. Suggestion: Sound of lithurgy The Church’s interior is separated into three naves with Tuscan columns. On their walls, you can see a set of rare elaborate tiles dating back to the 18th century depicting scenes from the life of São Pedro. The chancel is also decorated with tiles and there is a beautiful selection of 17th century fabrics. On its exterior, you can find a fountain attached to the church’s side wall, built of bricks and stone. It’s simple in construction and quite small, and has a tap and water collecting basin. Old churches were normally built in high places so that they could be easily found and clearly seen. They had towere, also very tal so that the sound of the bells could be heard in the distance. The bells were rung for different reasons: they marked the time, invited people to pray and announced births, deaths and marriages. We invite you to go inside the church but please be quiet. Last but not least, visit the Alameda D. Nuno Álvares Pereira viewpoint, our last stop before we return to the Castle and end our journey. POI #40 – Alameda D. Nuno Álvares Pereira Viewpoint – Female Voice From this point, facing the Alentejo, you can still see parto of the vineyards and hills that make up the municipality of Palmela, next to the Sado River’s estuary. Take in the vast expanses of farmland and get in touch with Palmela’s cultural identity, deeply connected to farming. Great estates and family business’ today combine ancient wisdom with innovative techniques, bringing tradition and modernity together in high quality products. Here, Palmela’s wine especially stand out having won numerous international prizes: from full-bodied red wines to fresh and fruity whites. And don’t forget to enjoy Setúbal’s unrivalled Moscatel whenever you can! Give into temptation and satiate your curiosity: follow the tracks that Dionysos once made and discover the old and renovated adegas, where the magic comes to life and you can try one of these irresistible nectars for yourself! I'm a native English translator and I have been translating texts from Portuguese (European and Brazilian) to English and Spanish to English professionally for two years now. I specialise in media and marketing translation but I also have experience translating corporate documents, literary texts, screenplays, tour guides and pamphlets, instruction manuals and websites.

I studied Modern Iberian and Latin American Regional Studies at University College London which included Spanish and Portuguese language as well as translation theory. I have lived and worked in both Spain, Portugal and Brazil and have travelled quite extensively which has given me a much greater understanding of the Spanish and Portuguese languages, their dialects and uses.
