Quantity related gains
There might be a better English expresssion to describe "ganhos de escala", but it doesn't occur to me at the moment. However, the concept is as follows: if you buy 10,000 units you'll pay less than if you buy 100. The same applies to production. A prototype will cost you an amount uncomparable to what the same product will cost in mass production. And what you gain is called "ganhos de escala".

Jane is right. This is a standard term in Economics. Even though "ganhos" isn't the same as "economias", the term, as applied here, means the same thing.
