A client asks me to do a translation in ASCII format...
Can anyone tell me what it is, and whether it is difficult to learn this?

Simple Nov 8, 2006

This is actually the most simple format: It's plain text. Look here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII

Actually, it's not so much a format as a way of encoding text. More interesting would be the file format, but this probably is what the client means (in Windows, it often is *.txt).

So, you will most certainly be technically able to handle it. No need to learn

To save Word file in ASCII format Nov 8, 2006

You can still use all advantages of MS Word (or other text processors). To save Word file in ASCII format just click "File->Save as" and select "Text MS-DOS with formatting" in the dialog "Save as"

Short answer: plain text Nov 8, 2006

Most probably the client meant he wanted it in plain text with no formatting.

He could also possibly mean that he wants the file to have a TXT file extension and/or that he doesn't want it contained in some wordprocessing or markup format.

There is a tiny chance that he actually meant it literally, namely that he wants the file in to have no more than the first 128 different characters of the ASCII table...

Plaintext is a format in which there is no bold/underline/italics, a single font types, font faces, and font size, and no positioning relative to the page margin (eg justified text, centred text, etc).

Better ask your customer Nov 8, 2006

You should make sure that your customer really meant "ASCII" and not "plain text".

If he really meant "ASCII", you will able to use only a restricted character set, which means that you will have to leave out and use replacement characters for special characters like ë. As I think that ë is the only special character in the Dutch language, this should not be too difficult for you...

I agree... unless the client means "ASCII Extended", which has more than just 128 characters, and can handle most Western European languages' characters.
