My system is slow and the virtual memory is low, so I have been looking at reviews of registry cleaners and I am confused by all the different options and conflicting opinions (some reviews even suggest that some cleaners, such as RegCure or RegistryEasy, are just scams, whilst others put the latter in their top three). I would be grateful, therefore, to hear about your experiences and for your advice and recommendations.

My experience with multiple free ones never was good- and then most of the "free ones" just show you statistics (you have umpteen hundred errors, at a go you can repair first ten for free- if you want a working version, please pay up).
So you have to pay up at any case and then I have to say that Registry Mechanic is one of the best- performance vs price.

Don't be scared off becase it's free--it's the best I've found, after having paid ones screw up my computer.
And, they'll take a donations if you feel better paying

CCleaner is great and JKDefrag once a fortnight to keep everything running just nicely...

It is reliable.
Have you checked how much space is left on your computer, Nikki? If it is close to half full, or worse, maybe you could consider spending a weekend deleting some files? For example, even if you have to save the source document and the final translation, you could delete all the intermediary versions and also leave only the final version of the .bak document.

From personal experience, it is very worthwhile, because, if you delete files that add up to a certain number of megabytes, it nevertheless seems to have the effect of clearing a few gigabytes of space on your computer.
Afterwards you should empty the recycle bin, and then run PC Pitstop Optimize2, PC Pitstop Erase and PC Pitsop Disk MD. That should do the trick.

The registery is a huge database that store all thr data of the Windows OS. This is one of the major weakness of the Windows OS.

If you will post your computer specification, mainly your amount of RAM, HD size *and how it is partitioned), what version of windows you are using, what other softwares you are using(Anti virus, Firewall, and more), does the slowness is more noticeable after the launch of specific software? is it noticeable straight after booting your system? aall of this it will help to try and find a better solution.
I recommend that you will download the software CCLEANER that was recommended her, and clean your computer from junk files from your system (temporary internet files, temporary OS files, and more).
Also use the above mention JKDefrag to defrag your HD.
When you will post some more details we might be able to suggest some potential solutions that will have a more effective effect on your system. ▲ Collapse

My computer started to become really slow after installing Norton 360, which includes antivirus, firewall, back-up, etc. I have only used up 13.3 GB on the C drive and have 127 GB left. I have 504 MB of RAM. The system details are: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00 GHz 2.99 Ghz. The operating system is Windows XP. Bit rot. All Windows OS get it.
First use the the Disk Clean up and Disk Defragmenter - via: All programs - Accessories - System Tools.
If this doesn't work, make a back up (I use MozyHome online backup, free up to 2 MB) and reinstall Windows. Put your backup back.
That will most likely fix it.

A translator's computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM, and 2 GB is even better. Consider getting some more RAM, and that should speed up your PC.

Hi Nikki,
Given the vital statistics of your PC and what you said (highlighted above), I'd seriously consider uninstalling Norton. It is the equivalent of pouring treacle into your RAM, in my opinion.
Having done that, consider one of the free registry cleaners mentioned in this thread, install it and follow the instructions. Only delete registry entries that it says are safe to delete. You will be very surprised how many ones you find marked Symantec or Norton. Wipe them.
Then look for an alternative to Norton here: http://www.proz.com/forum/poll_discussion/80294-poll:_which_antivirus_software_do_you_find_best.html
and install it (AVG is my favourite).
Also, as Astrid says, buy some more RAM (although I believe there are recommended limitations under certain conditions). Best Google for things like "Increasing RAM" etc. and see what the world has to say, or just ask someone at a retailer like PCWorld or Maplins, giving them full details of your current rig.
Good luck - it'll be interesting to hear how well you get on.

I have run a free registry cleaner and yes, you are right, lots of Symantec and Norton stuff was deleted. I'm not sure I want to uninstall Norton though. I'll try more memory first. To that end I have contacted Dell (where my computer came from) and 2 GB of RAM is now on its way. The only problem is they expect me to install it myself... (very easy apparently), but I am not tech-minded.
