- "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

It's [supposedly] funny because on the surface both propositions can't be true. If nobody goes there anymore, it wouldn't be crowded. Of course it isn't meant literally.

A classic example of irony, attempting to demonstrate that, although the restaurant is more popular than ever, the few original and regular customers (read: the ones who matter, and were patrons long before its popularity) no longer bother.

It means that the regular customs are not going there anymore because a lot of new ones are going there.

On why he no longer went to Ruggeri's, a St. Louis restaurant.

The point here seems to be that nobody *deliberately* goes there any more, because the place is too crowded. People going there nowadays are only newcomers who wait in line to be able to say "been there, done that" later.

One could assume that the person who is saying "nobody" is referring to people like him/her which might belong to a particular segment of society, such as upper class or intellectuals or artists, instead it is full of the wrong type of people for him/her
+2
Other point of view could be: If we know a restaurant is always crowded and we would have to wait for a long time for a table, we could decide not go. This happens in real life...!

Nice one! Of course, it can't be true! The truth appears when you substitute "None of the people I know go" for "nobody goes".
Nimeni nu mai merge acolo, este prea aglomerat. Adica oamenilor nu le place aglomeratia.
