I answered that it varies, but as a general rule I look at my emails. For me, that's the first step in organizing my day.

..check my e-mail but if I have a deadline and need to focus, I get straight into the work. In a former corporate life, I often responded to a call asking me if I had recieved an e-mail was "No, my mail box isn't open; I'm getting some work done instead".

I check my bank accounts daily, apart from Sundays and Mondays when nothing will have changed, to see how much has come in and how much has gone out.
It doesn't alter how much I work, but I do like to know how things stand.

but I got a good chuckle out of "check the quick poll, of course" and "stare blankly at the screen while the coffee kicks in." I actually stare blankly at a newspaper while I'm drinking my coffee, but after dropping my daughter off at school, I will read (more) of my email. These days, I check my phone for urgent emails before I even get to my computer.

1) have breakfast in front of the news online, then after 10 mins my day can start...
2) chek my email
3) work on the project I left the day before (or a new one)

I always check my e-mail first to see what's going on and if there are any new jobs, etc. Then I check Facebook to see what my friends/colleagues are up to. Then I usually check ProZ and the new poll!
After that, I settle down to work.

You really switch it on and then sit and wait for it to load?
Maybe your computer loads a lot faster than mine!
I switch it on, go away and do other things, then come back and get stuck in .... check my various webmail accounts as well as downloading the post which contains the REAL work, maybe look at the news.
Then I have to resign myself to getting some work done.

While the caffeine kicks in, I make moves in my online tournament games of Backgammon and Go-Moku (checkers variation). Gets my mind going whilst occasional mistakes don't have dire consequences. : )

I check my email first thing since that's how I find out about any work related stuff...i have three accounts, two of which are for work.
Then i get to work after breakfast with my big coffee.

I have a MacBook Pro and hardly ever turn it off. I just close the lid and it goes to sleep ... just like me.
