Marlene Curtis Nov 12, 2010:
Concordo Silvia Os sistema americano é diferente do brasileiro.
Silvia Aquino Nov 12, 2010:

Marlene, se você colocar no Google Federal Congressman você encontrará o link. Tentei ir direto e realmente não vai.

Selected

The father was a Congressman and the son was a State legislator

The father was a three-term Congressman and the son ran for the State Legislature several times but never got elected.

House of Representatives) e do Senado (U.S. Senate).

The father was a senator and the son a (state) representative.

The corresponding terms in the USA.

A congresssman can be a senator or a house representative.

In the United States, the term Congress refers jointly to both chambers or "houses" of that country's national bicameral legislature; the term Member of Congress there applies to members of both the upper house Senate and the lower House of Representatives. Rather than "Member of Congress", the more typical honorifics and terms of address are "Senator" (or "U.S. Senator") and "Representative" (or "U.S. Representative"). In the United States, U.S. Representatives are sometimes referred to by the terms Congressman, Congresswoman and Congressperson; the terms have fallen into disfavor because of their ambiguity.

If you are talking about the USA, the term Federal Congressman does not exist. Google it./It would be incomprehensible in English.

The father had been a member of the national legislature (or "congress"), and his son a member of the state legislature (or "state assembly").
ProZ says my full entry would be too long.

There is a "time" question here. You may need the past perfect (had been), at least for the father. If the father was in the national legislature and then _later_ his son was in the state assembly, the first should be in past perfect (event completed before a specified or understood past time). If they were both in those places at the same time, you can use the simple past (was /followed by the parallel structure). The other suggestions are fine if the simple past is all that is called for, but I notice Brazilian writers frequently omit use of the perfect tenses even when they are plainly intended.
