I posted here recently about CAT tools and looking for one that allows predictive text input. Well, it seemed somewhat difficult to find that, but I have just begun using OmegaT for a new project I am working on. It is my first time using this software, and I can see how it does help to a certain degree when the segments are nearly identical. It is my first time using this software, and I can see how it does help to a certain degree when the segments are nearly identical. But I am a little bit frustrated with the sensitivity of fuzzy matches. I would like the software to suggest matches for 5 or 6 word phrases within a sentence that are identical. For example, in certain sentence segements, there may be a 5,6, or 7 word phrase that I previously translated, but nothing shows up in the match box. So I find myself having to look over the document to double check that I translated this phrase in the exact same way. And in OmegaT, I cannot find any function that allows searching within the translation window.
So I am wondering, is that just how CAT tools work? If most of the segment is not the same, will it not suggest anything? Or is this just how OmegaT works? Is there anything I can do to adjust the sensitivity or something? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am certainly a newcomer to translation tools, so hopefully this question isn't completely basic knowledge! ▲ Collapse

I am not sure about all CAT tools, but the one I use lets to set a percentage of matches during project creation. For example I can set it up for 50%, or 70% or 30% (min. value allowed).
I haven't been using OmegaT for quite some time now, so am not sure if this option isn't somewhere available. But other CATs (at least mine) do have such feature.

I don't think you can change the match sensitivity in OmegaT in the current version, although you can probably do so by changing the source code and recompiling.
The problem though is that if you reduce the sensitivity too far, you will have a huge number of vague matches, which is counter-productive.
In OmegaT, as in any other self-respecting CAT tool, you can search for a string (Ctrl-F) to obtain a list of segments containing it, which you can then check and if nece... If your 5 or 6-word phrases are very common, you might also consider entering them in OmegaT's glossary, so that you will see them there when they occur. Some CAT tools (notably Deja Vu) have quite advanced functions for doing this. Wordfast users in particular will probably point to their app's "QA" function.

Very few CAT tools do this. Older versions of Wordfast did it. The problem is that there's no way the computer can tell which words in the source text correspond to which words in the target text.
Here's my translation of your sentence. Both source and target has 20 words. Can you say that words X, Y and Z in the source is necessarily the translation of X, Y and Z in the target?

WF's QA features check if the text conforms to a glossary or some similar list of things. It doesn't to phrase matching.

Thank you to everyone for your replies. I realize now that I can search within OmegaT, and at least that will help me once I run across something in the source that I know I have translated before. But I find it somewhat frustrating when I feel like I am translating large sections within a sentence that I have already translated, but no matches are coming up.
