Hello, I have Avast Antivirous pro 4.8 and I recently installed Google desktop search utility. I don't have any problem using either of them, except that I keep getting the screen message "Google Desktop is trying to modify Avast INI files. This modification might disable real time protection. Would you like to allow the modification?"
No matter how many times I have answered NO, I keep getting the message, let's say 10 times a day. Has it happened to anyone else? I really need Google des

1. Avast should have something like an "ignore list", where you should be able to include Google Desktop, so it doesn't bother it anymore.

2. I don't see particular harm in letting Google Desktop modify the Avast INI file. Just click "yes" the next time it comes up and forget about it.

As a precaution, you may want to save the original (unmodified) version of the INI file - find it using the search feature in Windows Explorer and copy it (not move) to a safe location.

If there is a problem, you will simply copy the original file back to its location and overwite the modified file.

YES doesn't fix it... May 14, 2008

Thank you very much for your answer. Actually, I have answered YES several times already, but the pop-up message appears just the same. It's not that big a problem, because it only appears when I'm not using the computer, but I was worried about what it could mean about my system.
Is it anything worrying?

2 Possible solutions May 15, 2008

Hi,

I have 2 possible solutions

1) It seems that the problem that you are describing is related only to a certain build of Avast 4.8. From some very unclear reason the problem does not get solved when you use the auto-updater. So you will have to download the latest version of Avast pro from the website, uninstall your current version, and then install the new version that you have just downloaded. Hopefully this will solve the problem,

3) If you need Googl

3) If you need Google Desktop only as a search utility and for this reason every similar software will do (I don't use Google Desktop so I'm not sure if it has any unique features), maybe you can use another Desktop search software e.g http://www.copernic.com/

*Edited

I forgot to mention that it is netter to use the Avast uninstall tool for this- http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html
