Looks like two camps might be forming - one who wants to get drunk and one who wants to swap tips on translation!!!
I'm in the first camp myself, after 9 months of pregnancy-induced abstinence
How about having a more formal do first (including lunch for those who want/can afford) followed by general get together to which people can pitch up to as and when?

Surely it doesn't have to be 'two camps'? I was just trying to voice a more flexible approach to cater to all needs. Attendees who are travelling some distance (Germany, The Cotswolds) will probably have to stay over, and may well choose to bunch together later on.

Well, Lucy, I wouldn't differ that hard between the two. But is is indeed a fact that the REAL useful information (i.e. how to avoid taxes instead of paying less, or how to get Trados second hand for nothing - don't ask me, I don't know...) come up late night. Well, a few pints always contribute to REAL answers instead of stereotypes.

Well, welcome to our newbies (I noticed quite a few among the attendees), I would strongly recommend to you to stay longer that night and listen closely to the more experienced folks on how to handle this job.
This was what helped me most, when I started this job 16 years ago...

Personally I favour the informal chat approach as proposed by Herbert . Not lectures on "How to use "WidgetTrans" but a chat about who we all are, how we do this, dot hat etc. It's amazing how useful (and indeed pleasant) that can be. And don't misunderstand Jerrie. I know for a fact Jerrie is a thunderingly decent chap who ir prepared to go out of his way to help and to bond with peers.

Having spent the weekend pub crawling (hic) for the greater good, I stumbled across a nice little pub which I think would make an excellent place to meet. The Lord Nelson Inn is a friendly, unpretentious pub with a great selection of real ales and some decent wines as well. Despite being within 5 minutes’ walk from Brighton station and very easy to find, it’s just off the tourist track but welcoming nonetheless. AND they have a roomy conservatory at the back (‘Nelson’s Gallery’) which... As everyone seems to be keen on informality and flexibility, this seems an ideal venue for meeting like-minded linguists and sharing experiences over a drink or five, without the need for a set programme, agenda or indeed menu.
We can always book a table at a restaurant for when hunger strikes towards the evening (I can do this nearer the time when I have a clearer idea of numbers).
