Imperatriz Perfeitíssima

Isabel é nome de rainha. Houve várias na Europa, mas nenhuma outra Isabel, nascida em Portugal e casada com um rei estrangeiro, foi mais amada, mais respeitada e mais chorada que a mulher do imperador Carlos V, no século XVI.
Filha do rei D. Manuel I e da rainha D. Maria, sua segunda mulher, Isabel nasceu em Lisboa, no dia 25 de Outubro de 1503. Imperatriz perfeitíssima lhe chamaram mais tarde os cronistas espanhóis. Numa Europa repleta de grandes convulsões politicas, religiosas e sociais, ela soube ser a mulher e a colaboradora do poderoso Carlos V. A sua beleza não foi um mito - basta olhá-la, serena e majestosa, pintada por Ticiano.
As primeiras negociações sobre o enlace entre D. Isabel e o imperador Carlos V (hoje as revistas diriam "o casamento do século"!) começaram no Outono de 1522, entre D. João III, seu irmão, e a corte espanhola. Ficaram acordados dois casamentos, o de D. João III com Catarina, irmã de Carlos e o de Isabel de Portugal com o imperador. O rei português casou primeiro e os trâmites para o casamento de Isabel demoraram mais uns tempos. Nestas coisas de casamentos, não há nada como uma "fada madrinha", e a recém- rainha de Portugal escreveu ao irmão a falar-lhe das muitas virtudes e beleza de Isabel, sua cunhada. Na Primavera de 1525, veio a Portugal o embaixador espanhol para tratar dos dois esponsais, tendo as primeiras negociações sido firmadas em 17 de Outubro de 1525.Almeinim foi o local escolhido. E aqui foi também celebrada a cerimónia do casamento, por procuração, em 23 de Outubro de 1525. Presidiu à cerimónia o bispo de Lamego, D. Fernando de Vasconcelos.
A partir daquele dia, Isabel de Portugal era já imperatriz. Houve festas e bailes e foi representada, pela primeira vez, a comédia Dom Duardos, de Gil Vicente. O dote da imperatriz foi de 900 mil dobras de ouro castelhanas, o que era uma enorme fortuna. Em Janeiro de 1526, começaram os preparativos da partida da imperatriz Isabel de Portugal para Espanha.
Com 22 anos, D Isabel parte rumo a Badajoz com uma grande comitiva. A comodidade da época não ia além de uma liteira, sendo o destino Sevilha. De Toledo, onde Carlos V tinha a corte, veio "um luzido acompanhamento", para fazer as honras à futura imperatriz. Carlos V mandou três emissários da mais alta honorabilidade. D. Isabel chegou a Elvas no dia 6 de Janeiro, acompanhada dos irmãos, D Luís e D. Fernando. Ao chegarem à fronteira, deram-lhe por montada uma linda "faca" branca, termo que significa cavalo pequeno, leve e magro, para maior comodidade na viagem.
Entrou em Espanha no dia 7. A cerimónia de troca de séquito ocorreu na fronteira, perto do rio Caia. A lindíssima D. Isabel, serena e sem mostrar o mínimo cansaço, ouviu o irmão Luís dizer as palavras do protocolo ao duque de Calábria: "Senhor, entrego a Vossa Alteza a imperatriz minha Senhora, em nome do rei de Portugal, meu senhor e irmão, como esposa que é da cesárea majestade do imperador." No final, em vez do protocolar beija-mão, D. Isabel quis abraçar os seus irmãos.
A viagem demorou dois meses. No dia 10 ou 11 de Março de 1526, realizou -se o casamento com os noivos lado a lado, e a cidade de Sevilha engalanou as ruas e viveu dias de grande alegria. Quem esteve presente nas bodas dos imperadores observou os recém-casados e comentou: "(...) Entre os noivos há muito contentamento, pelo menos é o que parece (...), e quando estão juntos, embora esteja muita gente presente não reparam em mais ninguém, ambos falam e riem, e nunca outra coisa os distrai". Como alguém disse, Carlos e Isabel casaram sem se conhecer e amaram-se depois de se conhecerem.
Os noivos imperiais ficaram uns dias em Sevilha mas, para fugir ao calor, seguiram para Córdova, com destino a Granada, onde chegaram nos primeiros dias de Junho. Ficaram no Palácio do Alhambra, onde era notória a influência árabe. Os mouros de Granada ofereceram, como prenda de casamento a Carlos e Isabel, 80 mil ducados.
Carlos, atencioso e meigo, deu a Isabel, por divisa, "as três graças, tendo uma delas uma rosa, símbolo da sua formosura, um ramo de murta como símbolo do amor e a terceira uma coroa de carvalho simbolizando a fecundidade". D. Isabel, além de ter um rosto de um perfeito oval, "olhos de garça", cabelos longos e loiros, com uma figura "esbelta e harmoniosa", terá percebido na lua-de-mel que a sorte a bafejara. Os noivos ficaram no Palácio do Alhambra, mas as comitivas eram tão numerosas que os familiares do lado de D. Isabel ficaram hospedados em São Jerónimo, magnífico edifício renascentista. Depois da passagem de Carlos V por Granada (onde nunca estivera), o Palácio do Alhambra sofreu beneficiações. Nestes dias de felicidade, Carlos ofereceu um cravo a Isabel, flor que na altura não era muito vulgar. E diz-se que foi por este gesto que um dos símbolos da Andaluzia e de Espanha é o "clavel".
Em Dezembro, os imperadores partiram para Valladolid, onde chegaram no início do ano seguinte. Aqui, a imperatriz deu à luz, no dia 21 de Maio de 1527, o herdeiro do trono - Filipe (depois rei Filipe II de Espanha, Filipe I de Portugal). Sabe-se que o parto foi difícil e Isabel de Portugal sofreu muito. Como rainha, quis mostrar-se corajosa quando as dores eram quase insuportáveis. Num momento de maior sofrimento, estampado no rosto, a parteira pediu-lhe que gritasse, porque ajudava a descontrair-se, mas a imperatriz respondeu em português: "Não me faleis tal, minha comadre, que eu morrerei, mas não gritarei."
Isabel de Portugal tinha residência própria, independente da do marido, onde viviam quarenta damas e açafatas e mais de setenta jovens, rapazes e raparigas, alguns filhos do pessoal que lidava de perto com D. Isabel. Além da morada do imperador, havia as casas dos infantes e infantas (quando já tinham idade para serem independentes), e ainda o palácio da rainha Joana, mãe de Carlos, que vivia em Tordesilhas.
Foram contemporâneos de Carlos V e de Isabel de Portugal, umas vezes inimigos e outras vezes aliados, Francisco I de França, Henrique VIII de Inglaterra - que na sua sucessão de esposas contou também com uma tia de Carlos V - Catarina de Aragão e o poderosíssimo Soleimão, o Magnífico, senhor do império otomano no seu período de apogeu.
Enquanto Carlos V estava em guerra ou a negociar tratados de paz com países ou regiões da Europa, Isabel tinha as responsabilidades de regente. O seu cargo era, como ficou escrito, "lugarteniente dcl reino de Castilla". Foi regente entre 1529 e 1532 centre 1535 e 1539. Nessa qualidade, viajou bastante. Para amenizar as saudades e para tratar de assuntos importantes do império, Carlos e Isabel escreviam-se com regularidade. Por vezes, o imperador não escrevia durante meses, a ponto de preocupar a imperatriz, que numa carta lhe "ralhou", dizendo que ao menos lhe escrevesse "todos os vinte dias".
Devido ao clima demasiado quente de Toledo e de Sevilha, a imperatriz Isabel passava os Verões em Ávila, por ser mais ameno, pois sofreu diversas vezes de paludismo. Viajava no Outono, com regularidade, entre Toledo, Valladolid, Sevilha, Barcelona e Maiorca. Quando tinha notícia de que o marido ia regressar, mandava preparar uma recepção, com grande comitiva, mas durante o tempo em que estava sozinha com os filhos, as damas e conselheiros da corte, Isabel de Portugal fazia uma vida muito ascética.
Em 1529, nasceu a filha Maria e, mais uma vez, foi um parto doloroso e complicado. Durante os 16 anos de casamento, Carlos não procurou outra mulher, mesmo nos períodos de ausência de casa. Isabel de Portugal foi novamente mãe, em 1535. Esta filha, Joana, viria a casar com o príncipe João Manuel, filho de D. João III de Portugal e de D. Catarina. Ficou viúva e à espera de um filho, que viria a ser o malogrado rei D. Sebastião, morto em Alcácer-Quibir.
Quando Isabel de Portugal morreu de pós-parto, em 1539, o imperador estava ausente em Madrid e ficou muitíssimo amargurado. Refugiou-se no Mosteiro de Sisla, vestido de negro, cor que usou até ao fim dos seus dias. Rezava. E frequentemente os seus vassalos lhe viram lágrimas nos olhos. Temeu-se pela sua saúde, tal era o seu sofrimento pela ausência de Isabel. Para ter perto de si a imagem daquela que ele tanto amara, encomendou um retrato a Ticiano. Era costume fazerem-se as máscaras mortuárias dos falecidos ilustres e terá sido a partir dessa máscara de cera com as feições da imperatriz que Ticiano concebeu o retrato. Quando o imperador o viu, não o achou perfeito e quis que o mestre pintor retocasse o nariz de Isabel. E assim fez Ticiano. Aliás, pintou dois quadros quase iguais. Um desapareceu, anos mais tarde, num incêndio. Resta apenas aquele que acompanhou Carlos V quando se retirou para o Mosteiro deYuste, em 1556, e que esteve na grande exposição de Toledo, de Outubro de 2000 a Janeiro de 2001.
A vida de Francisco de Borja está indissoluvelmente marcada pela de Isabel de Portugal, porque este fidalgo viria a protagonizar uma história verídica, devido à morte da imperatriz.
Francisco de Borja serviu na corte de Carlos V, onde conheceu a sua futura mulher, dama que foi no séquito de Isabel de Portugal. Deste casamento, nasceram li filhos, tendo sobrevivido oito. Em Maio de 1539, quando morreu Isabel de Portugal, o imperador pediu-lhe que tratasse das exéquias. A imperatriz morreu em Toledo, mas foi a enterrar em Granada. Acompanhou-a também o filho Filipe, que estivera sempre muito próximo da mãe. Entre a morte e o dia "da tumulação", mediaram 16 dias. O calor era tal que, quando Francisco de Borja viu, ao abrirem a tampa do caixão, a face daquela que fora a mulher mais bela do seu tempo, completamente irreconhecível, ficou tão impressionado que terá dato que, a partir daquela data, não mais ser viria nenhum senhor na Terra. Iria dedicar-se, de alma e coração ao serviço de Deus. Ficou viúvo em 1546 e entrou para a Companhia de Jesus, tendo feito votos solenes em Fevereiro de 1548. Foi ordenado sacerdote em 1551 e viria a ser impulsionador da cristianização das colónias espanholas e do Brasil. Foi canonizado em Abril de 1671.
Isabel de Portugal, por desejo do filho Filipe, seria trasladada, em 1574, para o Mosteiro do Escorial,
Depois da morte de Isabel, Carlos V passou mais tempo isolado. Deixou pouco a pouco os negócios políticos e abdicou, em 1556, a favor do seu filho Filipe, que subiu ao trono como Filipe II de Espanha, enquanto que o seu irmão Fernando lhe sucedeu como imperador da Alemanha.
Nos seus tempos de juventude, Carlos teve uma filha, fruto dos amores por uma flamenga, Margarida Van der Gheist. Esta filha casará com um Médicis e depois, já viúva, com o duque de Parma. Já viúvo de Isabel de Portugal, aos quarenta e cinco anos, o imperador Carlos V teve uma relação amorosa com uma jovem, que lhe deu um filho - , João de Áustria. No recolhimento de Yuste, Carlos V não se afastou completamente da vida política, mas levou uma vida simples. Olhando para o retrato de Isabel, terá então recordado os anos de felicidade com a imperatriz perfeitíssima.
Carlos V da Alemanha, Carlos I de Espanha morreu a 21 de Setembro de 1558. Isabel e Carlos estiveram algum tempo separados, também na morte. Mas depois passaram a repousar lado a lado, no Mosteiro de São Lourenço do Escorial, panteão dos monarcas espanhóis, mandado construir por Filipe II.

Isabel is the name of the queen. There were various in Europe, but no other Isabel, born in Portugal in the sixteenth century and married to a foreign king, was more loved, more respected, and cried for than the spouse of emperor Charles V.
Daughter of king D. Manuel I and of the queen D. Maria, his second spouse. Isabel was born in Lisbon, on the 25th of October in 1503. The most perfect Empress was how she would be referred to by the Spanish chronologists. In a Europe filled with great political, religious, and social convulsions she knew how to be the spouse and the collaborator of the all-powerful Charles V. Her beauty was not great - it suffices to see her serene and majestic - painted by Ticiano.
The first negotiations over the marriage between D. Isabel and the emperor Charles V( today the magazines would say "the wedding of the century!") began in the autumn of 1522, between D. John III, her brother, and the Spanish court. Two marriages were agreed upon, that of D. John III with Cathrine, the sister of Charles, and that of Isabel of Portugal with the emperor. The King of Portugal married first and the protocols for the marriage of Isabel delayed for a little longer. In the matters of marriage, there is nothing better than having a "fairy godmother", and the new queen of Portugal wrote to her brother to tell him of the many virtues and beauty of Isabel, her sister-in-law. In the spring of 1525, there came to Portugal the ambassador of Spain to treat about the marriage contract, having signed the first negotiations on the 17th of October of 1525. Almeninm was chosen as the place. And here too was celebrated the wedding ceremony, by power of attorney, on the 23rd of October of 1525. Presiding over the ceremony was the bishop of Lamego, Don. Fernando de Vasconcelos.
From that day, Isabel of Portugal was already empress. There were feasts and dances and was presented for the first time, the comedy Dom Duardos by Gil Vicente. The dowry of the empress was 900 thousand doubloons of Castilian gold, which was an enormous fortune. In January of 1526, began the preparations for the departure of the Empress Isabel of Portugal for Spain.
At 22 years of age, D. Isabel departed in the direction of Badajoz with a grand entourage. The convenience of the time was no more than a litter, the destination being Sevilha. From Toledo, where Charles V had his court, came "a brilliant accompaniment", to give honors to the future empress. Three emissaries of the highest honor were sent by Charles V. On the 6th of January, D. Isabel reached Elvas accompanied by her brothers, D. Luis and D. Fernando. On reaching the border, there was given to her a beautiful white "knife", a term which refers to a small horse, light and thin, for the best comfort during the journey.
She entered Spain on the 7th. The change of entourage ceremony took place at the frontier close to the river Caia. The beautiful D. Isabel, serene and without the least show of tiredness, listened to her brother Luis speak the words of protocol to the duke of Calábria: "My Lord, I deliver to your Highness the Empress my Lady as the wife that she is of his Majesty the Emperor, in the name of the king of Portugal, my lord, and brother". In the end, instead of the protocol of kissing the hand, D. Isabel wanted to embrace her brothers.
The journey took two months. On the 10th or the 11th of March of 1526, was solemnized the marriage of the bride and the groom, and the city of Sevilha decorated the roads and enjoyed days of great joy. Those who were present at the wedding celebration of the emperors observed the newly wedded and commented: "(...) Between the couple, there is a lot of contentment, at least that's what appears (...), and when they are together, even though there are a lot of people around them they take notice of none, both converse and laugh, and no other thing distracts them". As someone said, Charles and Isabel married without knowing each other and loved each other after having met.
The imperial bride and groom remained for a few days in Sevilha, but to escape the heat, they headed to Cordova, with the destination being Granada, where they reached during the first days of June. They stayed in the Palace of Alhambra, where the Arab influence was very noticeable. The Moors of Granada offered as a wedding gift to Charles and Isabel, 80 thousand ducats.
Charles, gentle and attentive as he was, gave to Isabel "the three graces, one of them being a rose, symbol of her beauty, a branch of myrtle as a symbol of love and thirdly a crown of oak symbolizing fecundity". D. Isabel, even though having a perfectly oval face, "graceful eyes", long and black hair, with a figure "slender and harmonious" perceived on her honeymoon that luck was with her. The bride and groom remained in the Alhambra Place, but the retinues were so numerous that the relatives from the side of Lady. Isabel were hosted in the magnificent edifice of St. Jeronimo. After the passage of Charles V through Granada (where he never stayed), the Alhambra Palace began to be renovated. In these days of happiness, Charles offered Isabel a carnation, a flower which at that time was not very common. It is said that for this reason one of the symbols of Andalusia and Spain is the "Carnation".
In December, the emperor and empress left for Valladolid, where they arrived at the beginning of the following year. Here, the empress gave birth, to the heir of the throne - Philip (afterward called as Philip II of Spain and Philip I of Portugal) on the 21st of May 1527. It is known that the delivery was difficult and Isabel of Portugal suffered a lot. As a queen, she wanted to show her courage when the pains were almost unbearable. In a moment when great suffering was on her face, the midwife asked her to scream so as to help relieve the pain but the empress responded in Portuguese: "Don't ask me to do like that my lady, I prefer to die, but I will not scream."
Isabel of Portugal had her proper residence, independent of her husband's, where forty ladies and maidens lived and more than seventy young men and women, some them children of the staff who dealt closely with D. Isabel. Apart from the emperor's residence, there were also the houses of the prince and princess (when they were old enough to be independent), and then furthermore the palace of Queen Joana, Charles' mother, who lived in Tordesillas.
The contemporaries of Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, who were sometimes enemies and sometimes allies, were Francis I of France, Henry VIII of England - who in his succession of wives had an aunt of Charles V - Catherine of Aragon, and the very powerful Sulaiman the Magnificent, lord of the Ottoman Empire in its apogee.
Whenever Charles V was at war or was in peace treaty negotiations with countries or regions of Europe, Isabel had the responsibilities of regent. Her position was, as it was written, "lieutenant of the kingdom of Castile". She became the regent between the years 1529 and 1532 and between 1535 and 1539. In this position she traveled a lot. To soothe their homesickness and to address important matters of the empire, Charles and Isabel wrote to each other regularly. There were times when the emperor did not write for months, to the point of alarming the empress, who in a letter "scolded" him, saying that he should at least write to her "every twenty days".
Because the climate was excessively hot in Toledo and Seville, Empress Isabella spent her summers in Avila because it was milder, as she suffered several times from malaria. During autumn she traveled with regularity between Toledo, Valladolid, Seville, Barcelona, and Maiorca. When she would receive news that her husband was returning, she would command that a reception be prepared with a large committee, but during the time when she would be alone with her children, the ladies, and the court advisors, Isabel of Portugal would lead a very ascetic life.
In 1529, she gave birth to her daughter Maria and once again she went through a painful and complicated delivery. During their 16 years of marriage, Charles did not live with any other women, even in the periods when he was not with her. Isabel of Portugal once again became a mother in 1535. This daughter, Joana, would one day marry the prince John Manuel, son of Don. John III of Portugal and D. Catarina. He became a widower while awaiting a son, who would be the ill-fated king Don. Sebastian, killed in Alcacer-Quibir.
When Isabel of Portugal died of postpartum in 1539, the emperor was away in Madrid and became very bitter. He took refuge in the Monastery of Sisla, dressed in black, a color he wore till the end of his days. He prayed a lot. And frequently his subjects would see tears in his eyes. There were fears for his health, such was his suffering in losing Isabel. To have before him the image of the one he had loved so much, he commissioned a portrait of Isabel to be made by Ticiano. It was the custom in that era to make the mortuary masks of illustrious men and women who died and it was from this wax mask with the features of the empress that Ticiano produced the portrait. When the emperor saw it, he felt it was not perfect and wanted the master painter to retouch Isabel's nose. And Ticiano did as he was commanded to. In fact, he painted two almost identical paintings. Years later one painting disappeared in a fire. There survives only the one that accompanied Charles V when he retired to the Monastery of Yuste in 1556, and which was on display at the great exhibition in Toledo from October 2000 to January 2001.
The life of Francisco of Borgia is indissolubly marked by that of Isabel of Portugal, because this nobleman would become the protagonist of a true story, due to the death of the empress.
Francisco of Borgia served at the court of Charles V, where he met his future wife, a lady in the entourage of Isabella of Portugal. From this marriage were born eight children. In May of 1539, when Isabel of Portugal died, the emperor asked him to take care of the obsequies. The empress died in Toledo but was buried in Granada. Also accompanying her was her son Philip, who had always been very close to his mother. There were 16 days between the day of death and the day of "being entombed". The heat was such that when Francisco of Borgia saw, the face of the woman who had been the most beautiful of her time, completely unrecognizable when the lid of the coffin was opened, he was so stricken that he would have said that, from that date on, there would be no more lord on Earth. He would dedicate himself, heart and soul, to the service of God. He became a widower in 1546 and entered into the Company of Jesus, having made his solemn vows in 1548. He was ordained a priest in 1551 and became the driving force behind the Christianization of Brazil and the Spanish colonies. Isabel of Portugal was canonized in April of 1671.

After Isabel's death, Charles V spent more time in isolation. He gradually left political affairs and abdicated in 1556 in favor of his son Philip, who ascended to the throne as Philip II of Spain, while his brother Ferdinand succeeded him as emperor of Germany.
In his younger days, Charles had a daughter, the fruit of his love for a Flemish woman, Marguerite Van der Gheist. This daughter would marry a Medici and then, already a widow, she married the Duke of Parma. Already as a widower of Isabel of Portugal, at the age of forty-five, Emperor Charles V had a love affair with a young woman, who bore him a son - John of Austria. In the seclusion of Yuste, Charles V did not completely withdraw from political life but led a modest life. Looking at Elizabeth's portrait, he would have recalled his years of happiness with the flawless empress.
Charles V of Germany, Charles I of Spain died on September 21, 1558. Isabel and Carlos were separated for some time in death also. But later, they were laid to rest side by side in the monastery of Saint Lawrence of Escorial, the pantheon of Spanish monarchs, commissioned by Philip II.
