This is part of a TIME CHARTER PARTY for Offshore Support Vessels between two entities - Owner and Charterer

19. Lien

The Owners shall have a lien upon all cargoes, fuel and equipment owned by the Charterers for all claims against the Charterers under this Charter Party and the Charterers shall have a lien on the Vessel for all monies paid in advance and not earned. The Charterers will not suffer, nor permit to be continued, any lien or encumbrance incurred by them or their agents, which might have priority over the title and interest of the Owners in the Vessel.

gravame vs. direito de retenção Entendo que sejam termos distintos, como se pode verificar a partir do trecho deste acórdão:
"I. O ónus a que se refere o artigo 257º, nº 1, al. a), do CPPT tem o sentido de uma limitação ou gravame do direito do adquirente face às expectativas que gizaram a aquisição, e que só por este pode ser invocado para o efeito de anular a venda, como claramente resulta do que dispõe o artigo 838º, nº 1, do CPC (anterior artigo 908º, nº 1) e, por conseguinte, o retentor não tem legitimidade para pedir a anulação da venda com fundamento no seu direito de retenção.” http://www.dgsi.pt/jsta.nsf/35fbbbf22e1bb1e680256f8e003ea931...

@Mark “Gravame” is already defined in the various references (including Marcilio’s Dictionary) that I provided in my answer. There is no indication that the term in the PT-AO example is a “catch-all”. Note the use of other specific terms such as “penhor”, “caucionada”, etc. I don’t see how “penhor” is specific, but “gravame” is not!

@Oliver, Gravame / direito de retenção I concede that gravame is used in Angolan Portuguese, and, to that extent, I stand corrected. However, as your Angolan reference shows gravame is a catch-all term. Gravame includes penhor, hipoteca, e inalienabilidade, and anything else that limits anyone's property rights, e.g. servidões, while the direito de retenção concept is limited and specific and corresponds to lien.

Em contexto imobiliário, o termo “gravame de hipoteca” é traduzido como “mortgage lien”, portanto “lien” pode ser traduzido como “gravame” ou “ônus”. “Gravame” é mais específico e, a meu ver, mais apropriado para o presente contexto.

Assuming that Mark Robertson is correct when he says the translation is into Angolan Portuguese, I found this example in “Diário da República: Órgão Oficial da República de Angola”:

I beg to disagree. “Gravame” is used in most of the Portuguese-speaking world, including Angola. See example I just added.
