London has always had a fog problem. The city lies in a natural basin surrounded by hills, with a major river running through it, and various waterways and marshlands all around. But these fogs are white or grey in their natural state. It was with the growth of London as the nation’s industrial capital that they began to be polluted by sulphur emissions from domestic coal fires and steam-driven industries. Thick yellow fogs occurred with growing frequency in the winter months when warm air above the river basin trapped cold air in the city below in a phenomenon known to meteorologists as temperature inversion. Unable to escape, London’s natural winter fogs became suffused with large sulphur particles, sometimes so intense that they turned from yellow to brown. As early as 1791, the composer Joseph Haydn, during his first triumphant musical visit to England, wrote on 5th November that ‘there was a fog so thick that one might have spread it on bread. In order to write I had to light a candle as early as eleven o’clock’
The fog experienced by Haydn might of course have been made worse by the bonfires and fireworks of Guy Fawkes’ Night. But fogs continued to increase in frequency and intensity with the rapid growth of the city. By the mid-nineteenth century fogs occurred more often and lasted longer, often going on for several days; they reached their greatest density and frequency in the 1880s, when many literary representations of London fog are set, even if written later, as with Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent, set in 1886 but published in 1907. Although they began to decline from then on, an effect even prompting an article on the decline of the Edwardian fog, they were still common in the twentieth century.2 Occasionally a really major fog, as in 1952, would still cover the city in a thick yellow blanket for days on end. The Clean Air Act of 1956, passed in response, combined with the growing use of gas and electricity as replacements for coal in domestic heating and industrial plants to bring them finally to an end. That is not to say that air pollution disappeared entirely: a major fog lasted several days in 1962. But it was the last. As time went on, however, exhaust fumes from motor vehicles have created a much more dangerous problem as the particulates created are small—small enough to enter the bloodstream. This creates a less visible haze than the traditional sulphurous fog, although it poses no less a threat to health; but it does not capture the imagination as the traditional London fog did, and is certainly not seen as a form of nourishment.
It is difficult nowadays to convey the sheer intensity of the classic yellow London fog, so dense in places that people were unable to see their hands when they stretched out their arms in front of them. E. F. Benson described one such fog in his The Book of Months: ‘January: Thick yellow fog, and in consequence electric light to dress by and breakfast by … The denseness … We blindly grope on the threshold of the future feeling here for a bell-handle, here for a knocker, while the door stood shut … From sick dead yellow the colour changed to grey’ It was thick and viscous, it smelt of sulphur and soot, and it made it difficult to breathe. Charles Dickens’s son, in his Dictionary of London, published in 1879, wrote that ‘Nothing could be more deleterious to the lungs and the air-passages than the wholesale inhalation of the foul air and floating carbon, which, combined, form a London fog. In this connection it may be taken as an axiom that the nose is nature’s respirator’. Much earlier the Illustrated London News in 1847 quoted an unnamed Scottish physician who posed the question: ‘If a person require half a gallon of pure air per minute, how many gallons of this foul atmosphere must he, as it were, have filtered by his lungs in the course of a day?’.
During the winter months, fog affected every area of life and all of the five senses, including taste. In 1874 the Illustrated London News described walking through a dense London fog:
around, a thick, substantial, clammy atmosphere, that weighs one down and clings and hangs to one … All that one eats or drinks has mingled with it the flavour and the odour of the dun atmosphere; it ‘burrs’ one’s throat and clings round teeth and palate, making even more miserable that most depressing of all things, a breakfast by lamplight—coffee, toast, eggs, everything, might, as far as taste goes, be red herrings or Indian soy.6
London fog not only changed the taste of all foods: from early on, people even referred to it as if it were a kind of food, above all, famously of course, pea soup. The artist John Sartain recounted in 1830 how he would ‘slink home through a fog as thick and as yellow as the pea-soup of the eating house’ (indeed, he soon emigrated to the cleaner air of America).7 In 1833 Thomas Carlyle complained bitterly about ‘that horrid flood of Spartan black-broth one has to inhale in London’.8 In his novel Maxwell (1834), Theodore Edward Hook described ‘the pea-soup atmosphere of London, which chilled every living thing, while a sort of smoky, misty, foggy vapour, hovering over the ground, made “darkness visible”’. Five years later, Rosina Bulwer Lytton, in her novel Cheveley, noted that ‘London in December’ presented ‘a pea-soup fog, which renders the necessary and natural process of respiration almost what Dr. Johnson’s idea of fine music ough‘t to be, impossible!’.10 The London satirical journal Punch (1860) fantasised that
a scheme has been devised for procuring the extraction of pea-soup from London fog. When the foreigner remembers that our fogs are now so frequent that the clear blue sky in England is never clearly seen, he may form a faint conception of the work which is cut out for this new Company of Soup-makers. The fog will daily furnish a lot of raw material, which English ingenuity will soon cook into soup.11
The American novelist Herman Melville wrote in 1860 in his Journal of a Visit to London and the Continent: ‘Upon sallying out this morning encountered the oldfashioned pea soup London fog—of a gamboge color’.12 Henry Vollam Morton in his book In Search of London, first published in 1951, recalled being caught in a ‘thick pea-souper which tastes like iron filings at the back of your throat’.13 Thomas Cook, the travel agent, used the term to promote winter cruises abroad as late as 1937, urging people to go abroad ‘when London is groping its way home through a typical “pea-souper”’.14
Melville’s description of the colour of the fog as ‘gamboge’ highlights its yellowness (gamboge was a deep yellow pigment derived from the resin of the gamboge tree and commonly used as a dye). We usually think of pea soup as green, not yellow like the colour of fogs; but the pea soup that lent its name to London fog was not the same as the pea soup we know today. It was indeed yellow, rather than green, made from dried split peas, and was traditionally a staple food of the urban poor, high in protein but inexpensive to purchase. In an era before household refrigeration, fresh ‘garden peas’ could not be kept for more than a few days; split-peas, turned yellow by the drying process, would last far longer, although they were much less palatable. The association with poverty is made clear in Thackeray’s story ‘A Little Dinner at Timmins’s’, first published in Punch in 1848, towards the end of the ‘hungry forties’: Mr. Timmins suggests to his wife that they should invite a friend to dinner, but she replies with ‘a look of ineffable scorn’, that ‘the last time we went there, there was pea-soup for dinner!’.15 The densest London fogs were often described, like pea soup, as a form of sustenance fit only for the poor, avoided by anyone who had the means to do so. Punch in 1850 observed that ‘March is said to come in like a lion, and go out like a lamb: but of November, on account of its fogs, it may generally be said, that it comes in like a basin of pea soup and goes out like a plate of peas pudding’.
This was another dish made of yellow split peas and consumed mainly by the poor. Known as pease-pottage, peas-pudding or peas-porridge, it was given to convicts on their way to Australia. Poor people kept a cauldron of it warming over the open fire, enriching it by throwing in all kinds of vegetables and cheap meat products day after day—as the nursery rhyme, ca. 1760, had it: ‘Pease porridge hot, Pease porridge cold, Pease porridge in the pot, Nine days old’.17 In 1852 Thomas Miller wrote of being in a London fog: ‘It is something like being imbedded in a dilution of yellow peas-pudding, just thick enough to get through it without being wholly choked or completely suffocated. You can see through the yard of it which, at the next stride, you are doomed to swallow, and that is all’.18 The Canadian writer Sara Jeannette Duncan emphasised these aspects in even more positive terms in her novel An American Girl in London (1891): ‘It was no special odour … that could be distinguished—it was rather an abstract smell—and yet it gave a kind of solidity and nutriment to the air, and made you feel as if your lungs digested it. There was comfort and support and satisfaction in that smell’.19 The American feminist Inez Haynes Irwin, who lived mainly in Boston, writing in her travel book The Californiacs (1916), described the white fogs found in San Francisco and the Bay Area as ‘Not distilled from pea soup like the London fogs’.20 The British detective novelist Margery Allingham published a story in 1952—the year of the great smog—entitled The Tiger in the Smoke, in which a serial killer commits his deadly acts within a foggy London. She used the traditional pea-soup imagery to describe it, but gave it her own singular twist: in the appropriately named Crumb Street, she wrote, ‘The fog slopped over its low houses like a bucketful of cold soup over a row of dirty stoves’.21 Here the soup is thoroughly unpalatable (‘pease porridge cold’), as chilling as the fog it describes, and through the image of the chimneys pumping out dirty smoke from its ‘dirty stoves’, the novelist makes it clear that Crumb Street is an abode of the poorest part of London’s population. Even Bob Hope, the famous London-born American comedian, could make it the basis of one of his numerous gags that Californian fog was ‘fog with the vitamins removed’.22 Fog could thus appear as a kind of food, ingested or inhaled: not air or vapour but something stronger and more solid, nourishing and filling, if not food of the grandest or most pretentious kind.
So frequent were London fogs between the 1830s and the 1960s that Londoners coined quite a variety of phrases to denote them. ‘London Particular’ was another term for fog, pregnant with meaning. It conveyed a familiar intimacy—the writers of Slang and Its Analogues, published in seven volumes between 1890 and 1904, noted that it meant ‘a thick or black fog, the product of certain atmospheric conditions and carbon: formerly peculiar to London’. ‘Particular’, they added, however, was another name for a mistress, perhaps hinting that Londoners felt as ambivalent about fog as some married men may have felt about their extramarital affairs.23 More importantly, a ‘London particular’ was a special quality of fortified brown Madeira wine produced solely for the London market, referred to, for example, in Thomas Love Peacock’s comic novel Melincourt (1817), where the Reverend Mr Portpipe, ‘a man of exquisite taste’, invites his guests to enjoy a ‘good ale and a few bottles of London Particular’.24 ‘London Particular’, widely used as a term for the combination of fog and smoke, came during the second half of the nineteenth century to be employed with a degree of nostalgia. As early as 1855 the New York Times, describing a home-grown American fog, wrote that it had ‘nothing of the characteristics of our old London particular except density’.25
The terms London Particular and pea-souper were brought together in the twentieth century by a recipe called ‘London Particular’ which was in fact, not surprisingly, a traditional pea-soup, brought up to date and dissociated from poverty by being described as ‘low-fat and low-cholesterol’.26 This particular recipe is illustrated with a scene of the character Krook’s demise from ‘Spontaneous Combustion’ in Charles Dickens’s novel Bleak House. As J. Hillis Miller writes: ‘Krook is transformed into the basic elements of the world of the novel, fog and mud. The heavy odor in the air, as if bad pork chops were frying, and the “thick yellow liquor” which forms on the window sill as Krook burns into the circumambient atmosphere, are particularly horrible versions of these elements’.27 In this central passage in the book, one of the main characters is dissolved back into the elements described in the famous opening passage: flesh turns into fog.
An attempt was made to rid London fog of its ‘nourishing’ qualities through a suggestion in 1904 to rename it. The scientist Henry Antoine Des Voeux, honorary treasurer of the Coal Smoke Abatement League, suggested that it should be named ‘“smog,” to show that it consists much more of smoke than true fog’.28 ‘Smog’, a portmanteau word combining the basic elements of smoke and fog, was designed to indicate that London fog was in fact a combination of the natural phenomenon of fog with the man-made smoke exuding from the many industrial and domestic chimneys in the capital, suggesting strongly that it was the latter that constituted the evil to be eliminated. But ‘smog’ was not popularly accepted until the 1950s, when it was used to refer to photochemical air pollution from motor vehicles, rather than the sulphurous mixtures of coal and smoke. Most people continued to prefer using ‘pea-souper’ or ‘London particular’ when yellowish fogs settled on London in the winter months.
For some, London fogs became part of the city’s identity, signifiers of what George Gershwin’s song called ‘A foggy day in London town, had me low, had me down’. For many Londoners it was an aspect of London Pride, the ‘grey city…. smokily enchanted’, as Noel Coward’s patriotic Second World War song called it. After all London is still referred to as ‘The Big Smoke’. The emissions pouring out into the atmosphere from the factories of the capital city showed that the economy was thriving. Industry provided jobs, and the sight of a smoking chimney standing out tall and proud from a factory meant that there was employment, while smoke from humbler domestic chimneys meant that people could afford coal to light and heat their homes, as well as to cook their food. Writers could see the positive side of air pollution. M. H. Dziewicki wrote ‘In Praise of London Fog’, its beauty and mysterious charm, in The Nineteenth Century magazine in 1889.31 Artists such as James McNeill Whistler, Claude Monet, and Yoshio Markino, fascinated by the shifting effects of light shining through the fog, also saw the beauty of foggy days and tried to capture them on canvas.
Yet people were early on aware of the dangers that London fog posed to their health, through consuming this thick yellow mixture. A tombstone in Kensal Green Cemetery in north-west London provides an early testimony to this perception with its inscription: ‘L. R. / Who died of suffocation in the Great Fog of London /1814’.33 In the revised edition of his book, The Climate of London, published in 1833, the meteorologist Luke Howard reported on a fog that occurred on November 11 and 12, 1828: ‘The effect was most distressing, making eyes smart and almost suffocating those who were in the street, particularly asthmatic persons’. Fog, as Charles Manby Smith, author of Curiosities of London Life, pointed out in 1853, created ‘a misty atmosphere fraught with catarrh and influenza’. The growing frequency and intensity of the yellow London fogs in the 1830s paralleled the rise of miasmatic theories of disease, which reached their height in the 1850s: these ascribed infections such as cholera to harmful vapours (caused by putrefaction) rising from the ground, and people tried to protect themselves from inhaling the fog by covering their mouths with handkerchiefs.
Animals suffered as well—birds flew around unable to find a spot to land and would fall down exhausted, unable to breathe. The animals at London Zoo were noted to have ‘very dirty coats … Polar bears and birds with soft white plumage, such as Spoonbills and White Peafowl, become extremely dirty… many Felines in the Lion house die from chronic bronchitis, fibrosis and gangrene to the lungs associated with blackening of the lungs by dust deposit’.36 The Smithfield Cattle Show, moved to the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington in 1863, was held annually in December, a month noted for its fogs. During December 1873 one of the first fogs of the season enveloped London and lasted for five to six days, coinciding with the annual Cattle Show. Animals began to be distressed as early as the first day of the fog and ‘exhibited symptoms as if they had been inhaling a noxious gas’.37 The organisers tried to create more ventilation by leaving the doors and windows open but, of course, this meant only that more of the dirty fog came in. The American writer Mark Twain, who was in England performing some readings (which were also heavily affected by the fog), commented that ‘the cattle are choking & dying in the great annual Cattle Show, & today they had to take some of the poor things out & haul them around on trucks to let them breathe the outside air & save their lives. I do wish it would let up’.38 The Daily News reported on the distress of the animals: ‘By daybreak two had died where they lay in the Hall, and by nine o’clock the reception yard was full of the great suffering animals, panting piteously in a state closely akin to suffocation; while in the interior of the hall sobbed and panted others nearly, if not quite, in as bad a state’.39 By the end of the week, ninety-one cattle had been removed at the request of their owners and ‘of these, 50 were slaughtered, some died in the vans in which they were taken away’.40 Contemporaries coined the phrase ‘fog fever’ to describe the epidemic of respiratory ailments and deaths among the cattle. The Daily News had no doubt as to the cause: ‘the sole ailment is suffocation … proved by an examination of the animals that have died or been slaughtered, their lungs being found gorged with black blood’.41 The same thing occurred to the Smithfield Cattle Show of 1952; fewer cattle died but some ingenious masks were applied including one that was soaked in whisky to act as a disinfectant.
But it was not only animals that suffered. The Medical Times and Gazette of that week in 1873 raised the issue under the title ‘Killed by the Fog’. The title distinguished between those people who were killed by accidents caused by poor visibility in the fog and those killed because of the fog’s direct impact on their health and above all their respiratory system. It cautioned people against following the age-old advice of ensuring good ventilation because this would simply let the fog into the house. Most people who could not afford to sit inside and just shut their windows to wait it out, resorted to homemade masks using a scarf or a handkerchief over the nose and mouth to protect themselves from the dirty particulates in the air.42 Fog had an impact even on healthy people, who suffered bodily discomfort and smarting eyes, frequently accompanied by severe headaches; but for those already suffering from lung complaints, or the vulnerable, such as the very old or the very young, ‘the combination of cold and smoky air’ caused ‘violent coughing; and whilst the patient coughs he cannot breathe, and cough materially interferes, moreover, with circulation’.43 The publication of the weekly statistics on deaths quantified in human terms the deadly impact of the fog and sparked an ironic outburst from The Times: ‘We are very glad indeed to hear that 780 Londoners above the average died the week before last of the fog. We do not want them to die, of course, but if they were to die, it is better that they should die of the fog, and so get rid at once of the superstition that the most disagreeable, inconvenient, dangerous, and spirit depressing visitation which falls on Londoners is somehow “good for us”. It is not good for us, any more than for cattle, but bad, as the Registrar’s return shows’.44 In fact, this figure of 780 was too low—the death toll is now estimated well above 1,000: during the smog of 1952, 4,000 extra deaths were acknowledged at the time, although it is now thought that probably as many as 12,000 extra deaths occurred.
Plants also were in a way suffocated by the fog. A plant’s stomata were likely to be clogged with soot, and the intensity of the light reaching the chlorophyll was also likely to be reduced. During the winter months, when fogs were most common, plants growing outdoors are usually in a dormant phase: ‘Evergreens were, however, coated with a thick greasy deposit of soot … not likely to be washed off very readily with rain’.45 Winter flower gardens at Kew were completely destroyed in the smog of 1952.46 One answer was to find fog-resistant plants and trees. The most successful was the ubiquitous London plane tree—its leaves are shiny, which means any soot from the air can easily be washed off, while its bark very picturesquely peels off almost continuously, thus allowing it to breathe and renew itself.
Since the late eighteenth century and Lavoisier’s discovery of oxygen, scientists had been investigating the constituents of the air, but it was not until a century later that they succeeded in liquefying oxygen, hydrogen, and other gases. As Alain Corbin showed in his The Foul and the Fragrant (1986), the growth of the respectable middle classes stimulated the emergence of the perfume industry, replacing musky scents that enhanced natural body odours with perfumes that disguised them. This highlighted the poor even more through the sense of smell. The poor became distinguished by what the middle classes considered their repulsive smell, and, along with this, their exposure to noxious miasmas of the kind that were thought to cause the spread of cholera, explaining, it seemed, the higher death rates from the disease in the poorer districts of the city. Judges at the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court in London, carried nosegays of highly scented cut flowers to protect their olfactory systems from the unpleasant and supposedly disease-ridden vapours wafted towards them by the criminals who were brought up from the damp and unhealthy cells below. In addition, the prevailing westerly winds tended to concentrate London fog and smoke in the poorer districts of the East End, where much of London’s industry was also located. Increasingly, however, as fog became more prevalent across London, including its wealthier West End, the distinction in air quality became less noticeable. Many who could afford to do so just moved further out of London. As The Times complained in 1853, industrialists ‘have a vested interest in compelling us to consume their smoke’.47 Living in the clean air of the suburbs, they come into town once a week by rail ‘to see how the chimney draws and how the till fills’, then go back home, leaving the inhabitants of ‘modern Babylon’ to suffer as ‘smoke penetrates the pores of our skin and the air vessels of our lungs, converting the human larynx into an ill-swept chimney’.48
John Timbs, writing in 1855, noted: ‘Suppose the wind to change suddenly to the east, the great body of smoke will be brought back in an accumulated mass; and as this repasses the town, augmented by the clouds of smoke from every fire therein, it causes the murky darkness’.49 When fog spread westward during the dockers’ strike of 1889, gangs of striking workers stormed into the fashionable districts of the West End, smashing shop windows and terrorising respectable passers-by. The fog and the strikers appeared combined as a threat of disorder to the placid lives of the middle classes, turning day into night in a social and political sense as well as an atmospheric one. And often fog and crime appeared in people’s mind as one. London fogs might be a means of concealing crime and disorder, as Sherlock Holmes noted in ‘The Bruce-Partington Plans’ (1908) when he gazed from his first-floor window in Baker Street at the fog-bound streetscape below (Plate 16.3):
The London criminal is certainly a dull fellow … Look out of this window, Watson. See how the figures loom up, are dimly seen, and then blend once more into the cloud-bank. The thief or the murderer could roam London on such a day as the tiger does the jungle, unseen until he pounces, and then evident only to his victim.50

The image was taken up again by Margery Allingham, in whose novel The Tiger in the Smoke the murderer is actually known by the nickname ‘the tiger’, stalking the gloomy and fog-shrouded streets of the city with evil intent. But London fog also suggested an antidote to the crime and disorder seemingly veiled under a cloak of mist: a warm fire in an open hearth, perhaps especially in the poorest homes, providing security and stability for the family—after all, a smoking chimney meant that people could afford a coal fire. The domestic coal fire was sacrosanct, and politicians disturbed it at their peril, while factory owners lobbied successfully against effective smoke abatement for decade after decade, arguing that economic progress and prosperity were the best guarantees of social order.
In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, unease about the atmosphere of London and the medical consequences of these urban fogs took on a figurative form in a series of popular novellas and short stories. Depictions of fog were now beginning to enter the realm of popular fiction. One such novella published in 1880 by William Delisle Hay purported to recall events which the author imagined taking place in February 1882. The Doom of the Great City; Being the Narrative of a Survivor, Written A.D. 1942 describes a dense smoke-fog that had lasted since Christmas and destroyed all life in the capital on the fateful day of the narrator’s birthday. The story was written as a warning of an impending ecological disaster brought about by the dirty atmosphere and constituted a hyperbolically imaginative response to the medical and scientific literature of the time, which had begun to warn against the smoky atmosphere. It also reflected a widespread feeling that cities such as London were growing too rapidly at the expense of a supposedly more idyllic lifestyle in the countryside, and expressed the threat of degeneracy posed by excessive urbanisation. The narrator’s highly critical description of London centres on its ‘murky atmosphere, the dingy gloom’.51 The fog is both a symbol of the corruption of the city and a veil through which the narrator sees ‘the odious colours of the evil that lies hidden behind the awful pall … Among the higher ranks of society immorality was so common as to excite but small attention … while up from the lowest depths there constantly arose a stream of grosser, fouler moral putrescence, which it would be libel on the brutes to term merely bestiality’.52 London is cut off by a wall of fog with the few people escaping London relaying horror stories of death. The narrator, desperate to know the fate of his mother and sister, whom he has left behind at their home, makes his way through the foggy barrier. He finds all of London dead; and death seems instantaneous. A sentry on guard outside Buckingham Palace still stands upright, as he has died at his post, and further down the social scale ‘two miserable little bodies in the gutter, two poor little ragged urchins … their meagre limbs cuddled round each other in a last embrace’.53 No one is spared: even the narrator’s mother and sister, innocent of the general corruption of the city, are seated next to each other, with a cat on the chair, but all are dead (Plate 16.4).

Thus London fog, with its sooty particles and its sulphurous constituents, could be a form of poison as well as a kind of nutrition in the popular and literary imagination. Medical opinion only gradually gained a decisive influence on attitudes towards London fog, helped by the rise of epidemiology and medical statistics, modern communications and news media. In the great killer fog of 1952, daily bulletins issued over the radio charted the rapid rise in deaths from bronchitis and other pulmonary conditions, eventually totalling an excess mortality of 12,000 over the normal number of deaths during the short period in which it lasted. The founding of the National Health Service after World War II created a widespread expectation that government would act to protect people’s health, and the Clean Air Acts were the result, bringing the history of London fog to a close. At the time of writing this essay, however, scientists have announced that air pollution is one of the major causes of death in our rapidly urbanising world today, having overtaken cancer and tobacco smoking.54 So there is still much more to do.
Nowadays, we only need to see a scene on television or in a movie of a foggy street dimly illuminated by a gas lamp to know we are in London in the 1880s or 1890s, and a crime or outrage is about to be committed. Modern dramatisations of Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories or films and dramas featuring Jack the Ripper almost invariably shroud the action in a thick London fog, though the technology does not seem to be available to give it the proper yellow colour. Yet in fact only one of the Sherlock Holmes stories, ‘The Bruce-Partington Plans’, uses fog as a central part of the drama. And although Jack the Ripper is inevitably shown shrouded in fog from his first fictional outing in Marie Belloc Lowndes’ 1911 novel The Lodger, via an episode of The Avengers in which a Ripper-like figure is called the ‘gas ghoul’, to an episode in the original Star Trek featuring a ‘Jack the Ripper’ figure hailing from the foggy side of a planet and butchering women, in fact all of the Ripper murders took place on clear nights.
From being the breath of life, a symbol of Victorian progress and well-being, through figuring as the breath of death, a vector of moral judgment on the evils of the big city, London fog has become a kind of free-floating signifier of Victorian crime, as artificial as the machines that produce it in the film studio or as the cans of ‘London Fog’ sold to tourists in the 1970s.

Londres sempre teve um problema com a neblina. A cidade é localizada numa bacia natural, cercada por colinas, é atravessada por um grande rio, e há vários canais e pântanos por toda parte. Mas essa neblina é branca ou cinza em seu estado natural. Foi com o crescimento de Londres enquanto capital industrial da nação que ela passou a ser poluída por emissões de enxofre da queima doméstica de carvão e das máquinas industriais a vapor. Nevoeiros grossos e amarelos ocorriam com crescente frequência nos meses de inverno, quando o ar quente sobre a bacia do rio prendia ar frio na cidade logo abaixo, num fenômeno conhecido pelos meteorologistas como inversão térmica. A neblina vivenciada por Haydn pode certamente ter sido intensificada pelas fogueiras e fogos de artifício da Noite de Guy Fawkes. Mas os nevoeiros continuaram a aumentar em intensidade e frequência com o rápido crescimento da cidade. Na metade do século XIX, neblinas aconteciam com maior frequência e duravam mais tempo, muitas vezes seguindo por vários dias a fio; elas alcançaram sua maior densidade e frequência nos anos 1880, período em que se passam muitas representações literárias da neblina de Londres, ainda que tenham sido escritas posteriormente; tal é o caso de The Secret Agent, de Joseph Conrad, que se passa em 1886, mas foi publicado em 1907. Ainda que tenham começado a diminuir dali em diante, um efeito que até gerou um artigo sobre o declínio da neblina eduardiana, elas ainda eram comuns no século XX. Uma neblina realmente intensa, como a de 1952, ainda cobria ocasionalmente a cidade num cobertor grosso e amarelo durante dias. Nos dias de hoje, é difícil expressar a intensidade absoluta da clássica neblina amarela de Londres, tão densa em alguns lugares que as pessoas estendiam os braços para a frente e não conseguiam ver as mãos. E. F. O filho de Charles Dickens, em seu Dictionary of London, publicado em 1879, escreveu que “Nada poderia ser mais nocivo aos pulmões e vias aéreas que a massiva inalação do ar pútrido e do carbono flutuante, os quais combinados formam uma neblina de Londres. Nessa conexão, pode ser tomado como axioma que o nariz é o respirador da natureza”. Muito antes, em 1847, o jornal Illustrated London News citou um físico escocês, não nomeado, que propôs a questão: “Se uma pessoa precisa de dois litros de ar puro por minuto, quantos litros dessa atmosfera pútrida ela deve, por assim dizer, filtrar pelos pulmões ao longo de um dia?”.
Durante os meses de inverno, a neblina afetava todas as áreas da vida e todos os cinco sentidos, incluindo o paladar. Em 1874 o Illustrated London News descreveu a caminhada por uma neblina densa de Londres:
ao redor, uma atmosfera grossa, encorpada, pegajosa, que pesa no indivíduo, se agarra e se pendura a ele... Tudo o que se come ou bebe tem a si misturado o sabor e o odor da atmosfera cinza; ela 'raspa' a garganta e se prende em torno dos dentes e palato, tornando a coisa mais deprimente de todas ainda mais miserável: um café da manhã à luz de lâmpadas — café, torrada, ovos; tudo, em termos de sabor, tanto faz se for arenque vermelho ou molho de soja.
A neblina de Londres não apenas mudava o sabor de toda a comida: já antigamente, as pessoas até mesmo se referiam a ela como se fosse um tipo de comida; sabidamente, acima de tudo, sopa de ervilha. O artista John Sartain contou em 1830 como ele “se esgueirava até sua casa por uma neblina tão grossa e amarela como a sopa de ervilha de um restaurante de esquina” (de fato, logo ele emigrou para os ares mais limpos da América). Em 1833, Thomas Carlyle reclamou amargamente sobre “aquela horrenda enchente de sopa negra espartana que se respira em Londres”. Em seu romance Maxwell (1834), Theodore Edward Hook descreveu “a atmosfera londrina de sopa de ervilha, a qual arrepiava todo ser vivente, enquanto uma espécie de vapor fumacento, nevoento, neblinoso, pairando sobre o solo, tornava ‘a escuridão visível’”. Cinco anos mais tarde, Rosina Bulwer Lytton, em seu romance Cheveley, registrou que “Londres em dezembro” apresentava “uma neblina de sopa de ervilha, que torna os processos naturais e necessários de respiração tais como a ideia que Dr. Johnson tem do que boa música deve ser: impossível!”. O Punch, periódico satírico de Londres, fantasiou que
foi elaborado um esquema para conseguir-se a extração de sopa de ervilha da neblina de Londres. Quando o forasteiro se lembrar de que nossas neblinas são agora tão frequentes que o céu azul da Inglaterra nunca é visto com clareza, poderá ele formar uma vaga ideia do trabalho que é reservado para essa nova Companhia de Sopeiros. A neblina fornecerá diariamente uma porção de matéria-prima, com a qual a ingenuidade inglesa logo ferverá em sopa.
O romancista americano Herman Melville escreveu em 1860 em seu Journal of a Visit to London and the Continent (“Diário de uma Visita a Londres e ao Continente”): “Ao sair esta manhã, encontrei a antiquada neblina de sopa de ervilha de Londres — cor de gamboge”. Henry Vollam Morton em seu livro In Search of London, publicado pela primeira vez em 1951, relembrou ter sido pego numa “grossa pea-souper cujo gosto é de limalha de ferro no fundo da garganta”. Thomas Cook, o agente de viagens, usou o termo para promover cruzeiros de inverno no exterior em 1937, incitando as pessoas a viajar ao exterior “quando Londres está tateando pelo caminho de casa no meio de um típico ‘pea-souper’”.
A descrição de Melville da cor da neblina como “gamboge” destaca sua amarelidão (gamboge era um pigmento amarelo intenso derivado da resina do mangostanzeiro, frequentemente usado como corante). Normalmente imaginamos uma sopa de ervilha na cor verde, e não amarela como a cor dos nevoeiros; mas a sopa de ervilha que deu seu nome à neblina de Londres não era a mesma que conhecemos hoje. Era de fato amarela, ao invés de verde, feita de ervilhas secas cortadas, e era um alimento básico tradicional entre os pobres da área urbana, alto em proteína e barato de se adquirir. Numa era anterior à refrigeração caseira, ervilhas frescas “de jardim” não podiam ser armazenadas por mais que alguns dias; ervilhas cortadas, amareladas pelo processo de secagem, durariam muito mais, porém eram bem menos saborosas. A associação à pobreza fica clara no conto de Thackeray “A Little Dinner at Timmins's”, publicado pela primeira vez no Punch em 1848, por volta do fim da “Fome dos Anos 1840”: Sr. Timmins sugere a sua esposa que eles convidem um amigo para o jantar, mas ela responde, com “um olhar de inefável desprezo”, que “da última vez que fomos visitá-lo, havia sopa de ervilha para o jantar!”. Esse era outro prato feito com ervilhas amarelas cortadas e consumido principalmente pelos pobres. Conhecido como guisado de ervilhas, pudim de ervilhas ou mingau de ervilhas, ele era servido para presidiários a caminho da Austrália. Os pobres mantinham um caldeirão dele esquentando em fogo aberto, jogando nele todo tipo de vegetais e produtos baratos à base de carne, dia após dia, para enriquecê-lo — como dizia a canção infantil, em cerca de 1760: “Pease porridge hot, Pease porridge cold, Pease porridge in the pot, Nine days old” (“Mingau de ervilha quente, mingau de ervilha frio, mingau de ervilha na panela, de nove dias atrás”). Em 1852, Thomas Miller escreveu sobre estar em meio a uma neblina de Londres: “É como estar encastrado num pudim de ervilha amarelo, diluído, mas ainda grosso o bastante para que você o atravesse sem acabar engasgado ou sufocado. Seu alcance de visão limita-se apenas à porção dele que você está fadado a engolir no próximo passo”. A escritora canadense Sara Jeannette Duncan enfatizou esses aspectos em termos ainda mais positivos em seu romance An American Girl in London (1891): “Não era um odor especial... que pudesse ser distinguido — era mais como um cheiro abstrato — e ainda assim ele dava uma espécie de solidez e nutrimento ao ar, como se os seus pulmões o digerissem. Havia conforto, amparo e satisfação naquele aroma”. A feminista americana Inez Haynes Irwin, que viveu principalmente em Boston, ao escrever seu livro de viagem The Californiacs (1916) descreveu as neblinas brancas vistas em San Francisco e em Bay Area como não sendo “destiladas de sopa de ervilha, como são as neblinas de Londres”. A romancista policial britânica Margery Allingham publicou uma história em 1952 — o ano da grande smog — intitulada The Tiger in The Smoke, na qual um assassino em série comete seus atos mortíferos numa Londres enevoada. Ela usou o tradicional imaginário da sopa de ervilha para descrevê-la, mas lhe deu seu próprio toque pessoal: numa rua apropriadamente chamada Crumb Street (Rua da Migalha), escreveu ela, “A neblina derramava-se sobre as casas baixas feito um balde de sopa fria numa fileira de fogões sujos”. Aqui, a sopa é totalmente intragável (“mingau de ervilha frio”), tão gélida quanto a neblina que descreve, e através da imagem das chaminés expelindo fumaça suja de seus “fogões sujos”, a romancista torna claro que Crumb Street é a moradia da parcela mais pobre da população londrina. Até mesmo Bob Hope, o famoso comediante americano nascido em Londres, pôde usar o conceito como base para uma de suas numerosas piadas de que a neblina da Califórnia era “neblina com as vitaminas removidas”. A neblina poderia, portanto, assimilar-se a uma espécie de alimento, a ser ingerido ou inalado: não ar ou vapor, mas algo mais forte e sólido, nutritivo e saciante, senão alimento da espécie mais grandiosa ou ostentosa.
Entre os anos 1830 e 1960, as neblinas de Londres eram tão frequentes que os londrinos criaram uma grande variedade de frases para representá-las. Um outro termo para a neblina era “London Particular”, repleto de significado. Ele carregava uma intimidade familiar. Os autores de Slang and Its Analogues (“A Gíria e seus Análogos”), publicado em sete volumes entre 1890 e 1904, registraram que o termo significava “uma neblina grossa ou negra, produto de certas condições atmosféricas e carbono. Anteriormente peculiar a Londres”. Os autores adicionaram, no entanto, que “particular” era uma outra palavra para “amante”, talvez uma dica de que os londrinos sentiam-se tão ambivalentes quanto à neblina como certos homens casados se sentiriam acerca de seus casos extramaritais. Mais importante: uma “London particular” era uma qualidade especial de vinho Madeira marrom fortificado, produzido unicamente para o mercado londrino. Ele é mencionado, por exemplo, no romance humorístico Melincourt (1817), de Thomas Love Peacock, onde o reverendo Sr. Portpipe, “um homem de gosto excêntrico”, chama seus convidados para saborear “uma boa cerveja e umas garrafas de London Particular”. Abertamente usado como um termo para a combinação de neblina e fumaça, “London Particular”, na segunda metade do século XIX, passou a ser empregado com um tom de nostalgia. Já em 1855, o New York Times, descrevendo uma neblina conterrânea da América, publicou que ela não possuía “nenhuma das características da nossa velha London particular, exceto a densidade”.
Os termos London Particular e pea-souper foram reunidos no século XX, por uma receita chamada “London Particular”. Sem surpresa alguma, era de fato uma sopa de ervilha tradicional, atualizada e dissociada da pobreza por ser descrita como “baixa em gordura e baixa em colesterol”. Essa receita em particular é ilustrada com a cena da morte por “combustão espontânea” do personagem Krook, do romance A Casa Soturna, de Charles Dickens. Como escreve J. Hillis Miller: “Krook é transformado nos elementos básicos do mundo do romance: neblina e lama. O odor pesado no ar, como se estivessem fritando costeletas de porco estragadas, e o “caldo amarelo e grosso” que se forma no parapeito da janela enquanto Krook arde na atmosfera circunvizinha, são versões particularmente horríveis desses elementos”. Nessa passagem central do livro, um dos personagens principais é dissolvido de volta aos elementos descritos na famosa passagem de abertura: carne se torna neblina (Figura 16.2).
Foi feita uma tentativa de remover as qualidades “nutritivas” da neblina de Londres, em 1904, através da sugestão de que ela fosse renomeada. O cientista Henry Antoine Des Voeux, tesoureiro honorário da Coal Smoke Abatement League, sugeriu que ela deveria se chamar “smog”, para mostrar que a neblina consiste muito mais de fumaça que de neblina propriamente dita. “Smog”, um portmanteau que combina os elementos básicos de “smoke” e “fog”, foi criado para indicar que a neblina de Londres era, na verdade, uma combinação do fenômeno natural da neblina com a fumaça criada pelo homem, a qual era exalada pelas várias chaminés industriais e domésticas na capital. O nome sugeria fortemente que a fumaça era o que constituía o mal a ser eliminado. Mas “smog” não foi um termo popularmente aceito até os anos 1950, quando foi usado para se referir à poluição fotoquímica do ar causada por veículos motorizados, ao invés das misturas sulfurosas de carvão e fumaça. A maior parte das pessoas seguiu preferindo usar “pea-souper” ou “London particular” quando neblinas amareladas se instalavam em Londres nos meses de inverno.
Para alguns, as neblinas haviam se tornado parte da identidade de Londres, significantes daquilo que a canção de George Gershwin descreveu como “A foggy day in London town, had me low, had me down” (“um dia de neblina na cidade de Londres me deixou deprimido, me deixou mal”). Para muitos cidadãos, era um aspecto do London Pride (Orgulho Londrino), a “cidade cinza (...) encantada de fumaça”, como Nöel Coward a chamou em sua canção patriótica da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Afinal, Londres ainda é chamada de “The Big Smoke” (A Grande Fumaça). As emissões que as fábricas da capital derramavam na atmosfera eram amostra de que a economia estava prosperando. A indústria gerava empregos, e a visão de uma chaminé de fábrica, alta e imponente, soltando fumaça, era sinal de que havia gente empregada; enquanto a fumaça das chaminés das casas, mais humildes, era sinal de que o povo podia pagar por carvão para iluminar e aquecer seus lares, tal como para cozinhar seu alimento. Escritores eram capazes de olhar o lado positivo da poluição do ar. M. H. Dziewicki escreveu “In Praise of London Fog” (“Elogio à neblina de Londres”), sua beleza e misterioso charme, na revista The Nineteenth Century, em 1889. Pintores como James McNeill Whistler, Claude Monet e Yoshio Markino, fascinados pelos efeitos de mutação da luz brilhando através da neblina, também viam a beleza dos dias neblinosos e tentaram capturá-los em tela.
Contudo, muito cedo as pessoas já tinham a noção dos riscos que a neblina de Londres representava à saúde, pois elas consumiam aquela mistura amarela e grossa. Uma lápide no cemitério de Kensal Green, no noroeste de Londres, dá um antigo testemunho dessa percepção. Em sua inscrição: “L. R. / Que morreu de sufocamento na Grande Neblina de Londres / 1814”. Na edição revisada de seu livro The Climate of London (“O Clima de Londres”), publicada em 1833, o meteorologista Luke Howard relata uma neblina ocorrida em 11 e 12 de novembro de 1828: “O efeito era muito angustiante, fazendo arder os olhos e quase sufocando aqueles que estavam nas ruas, em particular as pessoas asmáticas”. Como apontado em 1853 por Charles Manby Smith, autor de Curiosities of London Life (“Curiosidades da Vida Londrina”), a neblina criava “uma atmosfera brumosa carregada de catarro e gripe”. A crescente frequência e intensidade das neblinas amarelas em Londres nos anos 1830 foi paralela à ascensão da teoria miasmática das doenças, que chegou ao auge nos anos 1850: ela atribuía infecções, tais como a cólera, a vapores prejudiciais (causados por putrefação) saídos do solo, e as pessoas tentavam se proteger de inalar a neblina cobrindo suas bocas com lenços.
Animais também sofriam. Pássaros voavam em círculos, incapazes de encontrar um lugar para pousar, e caíam no chão, exaustos, sem conseguir respirar. Foi relatado que os animais do Zoológico de Londres sempre tinham “pelagem muito suja (...) Ursos polares e pássaros com plumagem macia e branca, tais como colhereiros e pavões brancos, ficavam extremamente sujos (...) muitos felinos na casa dos leões morrem de bronquite, fibrose e gangrena pulmonar, associada ao escurecimento dos pulmões por depósito de poeira”. A exposição de gado Smithfield Cattle Show, que havia mudado para o Royal Agricultural Hall em Islington em 1863, ocorria anualmente em dezembro, um mês notável por suas neblinas. Em dezembro de 1873, Londres ficou envolvida numa das primeiras neblinas da temporada, que durou de cinco a seis dias, coincidindo com a exposição anual de gado. Já no primeiro dia de neblina, os animais começaram a ficar aflitos, e “exibiram sintomas de como se houvessem inalado um gás tóxico”. Os organizadores tentaram aumentar a ventilação deixando as portas e janelas abertas, mas, é claro, isso apenas fez com que mais da neblina suja entrasse. O escritor americano Mark Twain, que estava na Inglaterra dando leituras (as quais também foram bastante afetadas pela neblina), comentou que “o gado está sufocando e morrendo na grande exposição anual de gado, e hoje tiveram que levar alguns dos pobrezinhos para fora, carregando-os em caminhões para que pudessem respirar o ar do lado de fora e salvar suas vidas. Espero que a neblina passe”. O jornal Daily News reportou o desespero dos animais: “Ao amanhecer, dois haviam morrido em seus lugares no Hall, e pelas nove horas o pátio da recepção estava lotado de animais sofrendo, ofegando lamuriosos num estado de quase sufocamento; enquanto no interior do salão outros choramingavam e ofegavam em similar, senão na mesma, péssima situação”. Ao fim da semana, noventa e um animais haviam sido removidos a pedido de seus donos e “desses, 50 foram sacrificados. Alguns morreram nos furgões em que estavam sendo transportados”. Contemporâneos criaram a frase “febre da neblina” para descrever a epidemia de problemas respiratórios e mortes dentre o gado. O Daily News não tinha dúvida de qual era a causa: “o único sintoma é o sufocamento (...) provado por examinação dos animais que morreram ou foram sacrificados. Seus pulmões foram encontrados forrados de sangue preto”. Ainda que com menor mortalidade, a mesma coisa aconteceu na Smithfield Cattle Show de 1952; mas nesta, fez-se o uso de criativas máscaras, inclusive uma que era embebida em uísque, para que ele agisse como desinfetante.
Mas não eram só os animais que sofriam. O jornal médico Medical Times and Gazette daquela semana de 1873 levantou a questão sob o título “Killed by the Fog” (“Mortos pela Neblina”). O título fazia distinção entre as pessoas mortas por acidentes causados pela baixa visibilidade na neblina e aquelas mortas pelo impacto direto da neblina em sua saúde, sobretudo seu sistema respiratório. Ele advertia as pessoas a irem contra o tradicional conselho de garantir boa ventilação, pois isso simplesmente permitiria que a neblina entrasse na casa. Sem condições de apenas ficar em casa de janelas fechadas e esperar a neblina passar, a maior parte das pessoas recorria a máscaras caseiras, usando um cachecol ou lenço sobre o nariz e boca, para se proteger das partículas de sujeira no ar. A neblina abalava até mesmo pessoas saudáveis, que sofriam de desconforto físico e ardência nos olhos, com frequência acompanhadas de fortes dores de cabeça. Mas para aqueles que já sofriam de problemas pulmonares ou para os mais vulneráveis, como aqueles muito velhos ou muito novos, “a combinação de frio e ar fumacento” causava “tosse violenta; e enquanto tosse, o paciente não consegue respirar, e a tosse interfere significativamente, acima de tudo, na circulação”. A publicação de estimativas semanais de mortes quantificava em termos humanos o impacto fatal da neblina, e inspirou um desabafo irônico do jornal The Times: “Estamos muito contentes em ouvir que morreram 780 londrinos a mais do que a média na semana retrasada, devido à neblina. Não queríamos que morressem, claro; mas se era para morrerem, melhor seria que morressem da neblina, livrando-se assim de uma vez da superstição de que a aparição mais desagradável, inconveniente, perigosa e espiritualmente depressiva a assolar os londrinos — a neblina, seria, de alguma forma, ‘boa para nós’. Não é boa para nós, não mais do que é para o gado. É ruim, como mostra o relatório do Oficial de Registro”. Na realidade, essa quantia de 780 era bem baixa — a contagem de mortos hoje é estimada em bem mais de 1.000. Durante a smog de 1952, 4.000 mortes a mais foram reconhecidas na época, mas hoje pensa-se que podem ter ocorrido até 12.000 mortes a mais.
Plantas também, a seu jeito, eram sufocadas pela neblina. Os estômatos das plantas eram propensos a ficar entupidos de fuligem, e a intensidade da luz que atingia a clorofila também podia acabar reduzida. Durante os meses de inverno, quando as neblinas eram mais comuns, as plantas que cresciam em ambientes externos costumavam estar em fase de hibernação: “Sempre-vivas ficavam, porém, cobertas por uma camada grossa e viscosa de fuligem (...) que provavelmente não iria ser lavada pela chuva tão cedo”. Os jardins floridos de inverno em Kew foram completamente destruídos na smog de 1952. Uma resposta foi encontrar plantas e árvores resistentes a nevoeiros. A mais bem-sucedida foi o ubíquo plátano de Londres. Suas folhas são brilhantes, portanto qualquer fuligem do ar é lavada facilmente, e a casca de seu tronco, de forma muito pitoresca, descasca-se quase sem parar, permitindo assim que a árvore respire e se renove.
Desde o fim do século XVIII e a descoberta do oxigênio por Lavoisier, cientistas estiveram investigando a composição do ar, mas só um século depois tiveram sucesso em liquefazer o oxigênio, o hidrogênio e outros gases. Como mostrou Alain Corbin em seu livro The Foul and the Fragrant (1986), o crescimento das classes médias respeitáveis estimulou a emergência da indústria do perfume, substituindo as fragrâncias almiscaradas, que realçavam os odores naturais do corpo, por perfumes que os disfarçavam. Isso destacava ainda mais os pobres, através do sentido do olfato. Os pobres tornaram-se distintos pelo que as classes médias consideravam como seu cheiro repulsivo, e também pela exposição que tinham aos miasmas tóxicos do tipo que se pensava disseminar a cólera. Isso parecia explicar o porquê da taxa de mortalidade da doença ser mais alta em distritos mais pobres da cidade. Juízes no Old Bailey, o Tribunal Central Criminal de Londres, levavam consigo ramalhetes de flores de corte, muito perfumadas, para proteger seus sistemas olfativos dos vapores desagradáveis (e, supostamente, carregados de doenças) que lufavam dos criminosos trazidos das celas úmidas e insalubres no subterrâneo. Além disso, os prevalentes ventos do oeste tendiam a concentrar a neblina de Londres e a fumaça nos distritos do East End, os mais pobres, onde também se localizava grande parte da indústria londrina. Entretanto, cada vez mais a diferença na qualidade do ar foi se tornando menos perceptível, pois a neblina tornou-se predominante por toda Londres, incluindo a área mais rica do West End. Muitos dos que podiam arcar com os custos se mudaram para mais longe de Londres. Conforme a queixa do The Times, em 1853, industrialistas “têm um interesse particular em nos estimular a consumir sua fumaça”. Morando no ar limpo dos subúrbios, eles vêm de trem à cidade uma vez por semana “para ficar olhando a chaminé fumar e o caixa encher”, daí voltam para casa, deixando os habitantes da “Babilônia moderna” sofrendo enquanto “a fumaça penetra nos poros de nossa pele e nas vias aéreas dos nossos pulmões, convertendo a laringe humana numa chaminé suja”.
John Timbs, escrevendo em 1855, observou: “Supondo-se que o vento mude de repente para o leste, a grande nuvem de fumaça será trazida de volta numa massa acumulada; e conforme ela passa novamente pela cidade, sendo aumentada pelas nuvens da fumaça de cada combustão na região, ela provoca a lúgubre escuridão”. Quando a neblina se espalhou para o oeste durante a greve dos estivadores de 1889, gangues de trabalhadores em greve invadiram os elegantes distritos de West End, quebraram janelas de lojas e aterrorizaram os respeitáveis transeuntes. A neblina e os grevistas vieram combinados como uma ameaça de distúrbio às plácidas vidas da classe média, transformando dia em noite, num sentido tanto sociopolítico quanto atmosférico. E, com frequência, neblina e crime surgiam na mente das pessoas como um só. As neblinas de Londres podem ser um meio de ocultar crimes e tumultos, como observou Sherlock Holmes em “Os Planos do Submarino Bruce-Partington” (1908), ao olhar de sua janela no primeiro andar da Baker Street para a paisagem urbana tomada de nevoeiro abaixo.
O criminoso londrino é incontestavelmente desprovido de imaginação (...) Espreite por essa janela, Watson. Repare como surgem os vultos dos transeuntes, quase invisíveis, para desaparecerem novamente no aluvião de névoa. Como o tigre pela brenha, o ladrão ou o assassino pode vaguear livremente por Londres, num dia como este, sem ser pressentido, até o momento de dar o golpe, perceptível apenas para sua vítima.

A imagem foi retomada por Margery Allingham, em cujo romance The Tiger in the Smoke o assassino é conhecido pela alcunha “o tigre”, vigiando as ruas soturnas e enevoadas da cidade com intentos maléficos. Mas o nevoeiro londrino também sugeria um antídoto para o crime e a desordem que parecia ocultar-se sob o véu de névoa: uma chama morna numa fornalha, que providenciava, até mais nos lares mais pobres, segurança e estabilidade para a família. Afinal, uma chaminé fumegante era sinal de que o povo podia pagar por fogo de carvão. A fogueira doméstica de carvão era sacrossanta, e os políticos a perturbavam por sua conta e risco. Enquanto isso, década após década, donos de fábricas organizavam com sucesso campanhas contra medidas de redução efetiva de gases, argumentando que o progresso econômico e a prosperidade eram as melhores garantias de ordem social.
No último quarto do século XIX, as inseguranças acerca da atmosfera de Londres e das consequências médicas desses nevoeiros urbanos tomaram formas figuradas, numa série de novelas e contos. Representações da neblina começavam agora a penetrar o reino da ficção popular. Uma dessas novelas, publicada por William Delisle Hay em 1880, tinha o propósito de rememorar eventos que o autor imaginava terem ocorrido em fevereiro de 1882. The Doom of the Great City; Being the Narrative of a Survivor, Written A.D. 1942 (“A Queda da Grande Cidade; Sendo a Narrativa de um Sobrevivente, Escrita em 1942 d.C.”) descreve uma densa neblina de fumaça que já perdurava desde o Natal, e que destruiu toda a vida na capital no fatídico dia do aniversário do narrador. A narrativa foi escrita como alerta sobre um iminente desastre ecológico que a atmosfera suja traria. A história constituía-se de uma resposta hiperbolicamente criativa à literatura médica e científica da época, que já começava a alertar contra a atmosfera fumacenta. Ela também refletia uma sensação, largamente difundida, de que cidades como Londres cresciam depressa demais, às custas de um estilo de vida supostamente mais idílico no interior; tal como expressava a ameaça da degeneração que a urbanização excessiva representava. A descrição intensamente crítica de Londres feita pelo autor centra-se em sua “atmosfera lúgubre, a baça melancolia”. A neblina é ao mesmo tempo um símbolo da corrupção da cidade e um véu através do qual o narrador enxerga “as odiosas cores do mal que se esconde por trás da horrível mortalha (...) A imoralidade dentre os escalões mais altos da sociedade era tão frívola que pouco atraía qualquer atenção (...) ao passo que, das profundezas, subia constantemente um jorro de putrescência ainda mais repulsivo e sórdido, o qual chamar de ‘bestialidade’ seria calúnia às bestas”. Desesperado para descobrir o destino de sua mãe e irmã, as quais deixara para trás em casa, o narrador atravessa a barreira de nevoeiro. Ele encontra toda a Londres morta; e a morte parece ter sido instantânea. Um sentinela de guarda em frente ao Palácio de Buckingham permanece de pé, tendo morrido em seu posto; e mais abaixo na escala social, “dois pequenos corpos miseráveis na sarjeta, duas pobres e esfarrapadas crianças de rua (...) seus braços macilentos se envolvendo num último abraço”. Ninguém é poupado: inocentes da corrupção generalizada da cidade, a mãe e a irmã do narrador permanecem sentadas lado a lado, e junto delas um gato na cadeira; porém todos mortos (Figura 16.4).

Portanto, a neblina de Londres, com suas partículas de fuligem e composição sulfurosa, poderiam ser tanto um tipo de veneno quanto uma espécie de nutriente no imaginário popular e literário. Foi apenas gradualmente que a opinião médica ganhou influência decisiva nas medidas acerca da neblina londrina, com apoio da ascensão da epidemiologia e estatísticas médicas, e dos meios modernos de comunicação e notícias. No grande nevoeiro assassino de 1952, boletins diários transmitidos no rádio mapearam o rápido aumento nas mortes por bronquite e outras doenças pulmonares. Eventualmente, foi totalizada uma mortalidade excedente de 12.000 óbitos em relação ao número normal, ao longo do curto período em que o nevoeiro durou. A fundação do Serviço Nacional de Saúde, após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, criou uma expectativa geral de que o governo agiria para proteger a saúde da população, e as Clean Air Acts foram o resultado, trazendo um fim à história da neblina de Londres. Entretanto, na época em que este ensaio está sendo escrito, cientistas anunciaram que, nesse nosso mundo em rápida urbanização, a poluição do ar é uma das maiores causas de morte, tendo superado o câncer e o cigarro. Portanto, ainda há muito a se fazer.
Nos dias atuais, seja na televisão ou em um filme, é preciso apenas ver uma cena de alguma rua repleta de neblina, iluminada por uma fraca lâmpada de gás, para saber que se está na Londres dos anos 1880 ou 1890, e que um crime ou atrocidade está prestes a ser cometido. Dramatizações modernas das histórias de Sherlock Holmes, de Conan Doyle, ou filmes e peças sobre Jack, o Estripador, quase sempre envolvem a ação num denso nevoeiro londrino. Não parece, porém, que haja tecnologia disponível para dar a ela a coloração amarela apropriada. Contudo, na verdade apenas uma das histórias de Sherlock Holmes, “Os Planos do Submarino Bruce-Partington”, usa a neblina como parte central da trama. Jack, o Estripador, é inevitavelmente mostrado envolto em névoa: desde sua primeira excursão na ficção em 1911, no romance The Lodger, de Marie Belloc Lowndes; num episódio da série The Avengers no qual uma figura similar ao Estripador é chamada de “carniçal de gás”; até um episódio da série Star Trek original, onde um personagem que é uma espécie de ‘Jack, o Estripador’, vindo do lado nebuloso de um planeta, retalha mulheres. Mas a verdade é que todos os assassinatos cometidos pelo Estripador ocorreram em noites de clima límpido.
De ser o sopro da vida, um símbolo de bem-estar e do progresso vitoriano, até tornar-se a representação do sopro da morte e um vetor do julgamento moral dos males da cidade grande, a neblina de Londres se tornou uma espécie de significante flutuante dos crimes da Era Vitoriana, tão artificial quanto as máquinas que a produzem nos estúdios de cinema, ou quanto as latas de “neblina de Londres” que vendiam-se aos turistas nos anos 1970.

The Tale of the Two Worlds
There is usually some truth to legends, but the truth is at best misty, lost in the fog of oral history. Many historians that recorded the ancient and early medieval times of Ireland preface their tomes with a disclaimer indicating that it is unknown as to whether what is said and written is real or legendary. In the ancient poem, Lebor Gabala Erenn, it tells that, in the stories about the first kings of Ireland, “…the truth was not known beneath the sky of stars, whether they were of heaven or of earth.” Thus, the dichotomy of the historical and legendary. “Tuath” is the Irish term for “people, tribe or nation.” The race of these people is called Tuath de Danann. The Tuath De came on dark clouds from four mythical cities in northern Ireland – Gorias, Murias, Falias and Finias. The Tuath De were of earth then, and taught their subject people the sciences, architecture, literature, the arts, magic and necromancy. Necromancy is the practice of communicating with the dead, and includes learning the skills of alchemy, fortune-telling, and healing. When the Tuatha (plural for Tuath) came to the island, there were people there– the Fir Bolg. The king of the Tuath, Nuada, made contact with the Fir Bolg, and demanded half of the island on which to settle. As would be expected, the Fir Bold refused. It is said that the Tuath de Danann was the world of mankind. However, as the old Irish will inform the reader, they did not continue to live in the corporeal world. There are many sagas that tell how that happened. Battle of Magh Tuiredh The king and champion of the Tuatha, Nuada, challenged the hero of the Fir Bolg people to a battle. Streng was the champion of the Fir Bolg. He fought with an iron mace, swinging it high, and sure enough, it descended upon Nuada. However, when Nuada lost an arm in the battle, he had to be replaced by the half-Fomorian Bres. “Fomorian” refers to the supernatural race in Ireland – deities, in other words. In those days, as in any chivalrous battles in the medieval times, the champion had to fight to the death. It wasn’t permitted for him to concede; he was replaced instead. After his injury, Nuada was carried off the field under the protection of Dagda, a Celtic god and a Druid. Bres fought with his heavy broadsword, sharpened on either side. The two combatants hacked and swung, wildly at first, and then with determined blows. After the hard battle was won, it was Bres, the half-Fomorian, who emerged victorious. Now, it is well-known in Irish legends that the Fomorians are monstrous beings, who come from the depths of the sea. They are cruel and merciless. As the king, Bres was a tyrant whom the people rejected. Dian Cecht, the god of healing, then healed Nuada’s arm, and he was reinstated as King. Bres was resentful and complained, and his complaints reached Balor, the head god of the Fomorians. Balor had an evil eye that could wreak destruction upon man and beast. Another battle was fought, and Nuada was slain by Balor’s poisonous eye. Balor, in turn, died at the hands of Tuath De’s next champion, Lugh. Lugh is the god of warriors and the god of craftsmen.
