Fetal surgery – or operating on babies while they’re still in their mother’s womb — is a relatively new field of medicine that’s evolved over the last 30 years.
Surgeons can now operate on a fetus's spine
Advances in science and technology have opened the door to exciting possibilities for surgeons to do prenatal operations that can, in some cases, prevent the death of a fetus or improve the quality of life for babies with certain birth defects.
Among the most common birth defects is spina bifida, a condition where a baby’s spinal column doesn’t form properly.
In its most severe form (myelomeningocele), spina bifida leaves part of the baby’s spinal cord and nerves exposed through an opening in the baby’s back.
Because of the nerve damage they sustain, most children with spina bifida cannot walk, and many have trouble controlling their bowel or bladder functions.
The baby’s spinal fluid can also leak out, causing a condition called hydrocephalus that can lead to brain damage, seizures or blindness.
Surgery can fix the abnormal opening once the baby is born, but it can’t undo any damage that’s already been done to the exposed nerves.
Babies with spina bifida may also need to have additional surgery to have a plastic shunt inserted into their brain to drain off the excess fluid caused by hydrocephalus.
But performing the corrective surgery on babies while they’re still in the womb could reduce the damage by shielding the nerves and sealing in spinal fluid sooner.

Please follow these precautions while using this unit at the beach or near water. Failing to do so can seriously damage the camera and may void the warranty.
If lint, hair, sand or any other foreign material is present on the areas shown in the figure (the inner side of the door/cover), water can leak into this unit within a few seconds and cause permanent damage.

Do not open or close the door/cover if your hands are wet or there are any traces of sand on this unit.
Sand and dust etc. will adhere to this unit by lodging in between the gap around the door/cover when used in the following locations:
– Where sand is floating , such as in a body of water.
– Where there is a lot of sand or dust, such as at the beach or in a sand box etc.
[1] Checks prior to use
Before closing the door/cover (C), confirm that there are no foreign objects (hair, lint, sand, dust, fluid, etc.) on part (D) colored red in the figure.
Wipe with a dry, soft cloth if there is any liquid.
Closing the door/cover with water droplets left on this unit may allow water to enter and cause a malfunction.

We suggest cleaning this unit indoors. Your hands should be clean and free of sand, salt water and sunscreen lotion.
Do not open the door/cover until all external sand, salt water and foreign material has been rinsed off this unit using fresh water. After rinsing please follow the steps below:
Recommended Maintenance
Following use in salt water allow this unit to soak in a shallow container of fresh water for about 10 minutes.
Dry this unit and allow it to stand upright on a clean dry cloth so any residual water can drain. Some drainage is normal.
After this unit is allowed to dry naturally, please inspect the door/cover to be sure no sand or foreign material is present. Clean as required.
About the waterproof/dustproof and anti-shock performance of this unit
This unit can be used underwater to a maximum depth of 3 m for a maximum of 60 minutes.
Do not leave this unit in extremely cold places where the temperature will go below 0 °C.
Do not leave the camera anywhere where the temperature may exceed 35 °C. This includes inside a locked car where it may be exposed to direct sunlight.
Supplied accessories are not waterproof.
This unit should not be used in spas, hot tubs, natural hot springs or anywhere the water temperature may reach high temperatures.
Please note: the waterproof integrity of this unit is not guaranteed if this unit was subjected to impact as a result of being dropped. Any damage caused by mishandling or misuse may void your warranty.
