ProZ.com powwow: Translation in East Anglia

October 29, 2011, 1:00 pm
Reino UnidoCambridgeIn personinglês

It is 8 years since we last held a Powwow in Cambridge - in the days when UK Powwows were still a rarity.
Last time we met at the Fort St George in England, by the river on Midsummer Common and attracted translators from all over East Anglia and further afield.
We could repeat the exercise - or find somewhere closer to the station if preferred.

Looking promising Sep 7, 2011

Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest. This looks quite a healthy number of possibles at this early stage.
I am allowed one more "advert" and am planning to post in the "Translation in the UK" forum in early October.
I have suggested 12:00 noon because, last time, quite a number of people had travelled from elsewhere and wanted something to eat, which anyway was some return for the landlord, who gave us the room for free. The London Powwows usually start at 3:00 pm tho

If anyone has any special topics they would like to discuss, do please air them here; some preparation might lead to a more productive discussion. Equally, if anyone has a special expertise or area of knowledge that might be of interest, volunteer presentations would be welcome.

I spoke to the Manager of the Fort St George yesterday - very helpful. The room we used last time is not ideal in its present format but an imminent refurbishment will correct that and, if we are fewer than 15, we can use the snug. There is no fee and no obligation to buy food, though it is available - he is sending me a current menu, which I will try to make available.
In the unlikely event that the refurb over-runs (it is scheduled to finish by the 22nd), they will find us a room in one

In the unlikely event that the refurb over-runs (it is scheduled to finish by the 22nd), they will find us a room in one of their other 16 pubs in Cambridge.
For anyone travelling and unfamiliar with Cambridge, I shall prepare some guidelines on how to reach the venue.
Off to the States for 2 weeks, visiting my son and grandson.
More in October.

Hi Gillian.

Obviously we can compromise, but I am conscious that we are getting the room for free and this is no doubt based on the proprietor's expectation that some people at least, will order something to eat.

Let's see what others think.

Transport etc. Oct 10, 2011

As promised, here are some suggestions on how to reach the Fort St. George.. I live outside Cambridge myself, so any corrections or better suggestions from city residents will be very welcome.

If you are lucky, it may be possible to find on-street parking in the Hamilton / Pretoria / Aylestone Road area, here: http://g.co/maps/x2zs6 and cross the footbridge to Midsummer Common.

If you are lucky, it may be possible to find on-street parking in the Hamilton / Pretoria / Aylestone Road area, here: http://g.co/maps/x2zs6 and cross the footbridge to Midsummer Common.

The postcode of the pub is CB4 1HA but for anyone using SatNav, this will take you to the area on other side of the river, mentioned above.

The nearest City car-parks are at the Grafton Centre West: http://g.co/maps/vvtyv or at Park Street: http://g.co/maps/afqrx There are short cut paths across Midsummer Common and Jesus Green but both are over half a mile from the Fort St. George.

There are five Park & Ride sites around Cambridge: http://tinyurl.com/yzfe3la None of the bus routes runs very close to the Fort St. George; all except those from the Trumpington Road site stop at the Eastern side of the Grafton Centre shopping centre: http://g.co/maps/5p7gt

Bus service Citi 1 runs frequently from the Station, via St. Andrews Street (close to the Drummer Street Bus Station: http://tinyurl.com/6cbmdrs ) to the Mitcham’s Corner part of Chesterton Road: http://g.co/maps/4mza8

If anyone needs further help or advice, please let me know: http://www.proz.com/?sp=mailsend&eid_s=35845

Confirmation please Oct 21, 2011

As the date of our Powwow in Cambridge is fast approaching, it would be very helpful to know more accurately whether you are planning (or still hoping) to attend.

We can then decide which room in the Fort St. George to reserve.

Could you please update your entry on this page as soon as convenient - even if you are still uncertain but still hoping to attend - by clicking on the double arrow in the Will Attend column - to the right of your Name and Note - and then selecting

If anyone wishes to comment on Gillian’s note about the time, suggest a subject for discussion or volunteer a short presentation, this would be a good opportunity to do so.

Equally, if anyone has any particular requirements or difficulties that I might be able to help with, do please e-mail me, through my profile - http://www.proz.com/?sp=mailsend&eid_s=35845.

Identity Verification (or VIDing) is intended “to increase mutual trust across the site, in particular among users who don't know each other personally” as described here: http://www.proz.com/faq/2407#2407 . This is the meaning of the tick shown next to people’s names in Forum posts etc.

Anyone wishing to have their identity verified at the Powwow, free of charge, may like to refer to the requirements here: http://www.proz.com/faq/2419#2419 .

Attendance at a Powwow qualifies for 200 “Browniz”, which can count towards the 4,000 needed for a discounted membership fee.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week.

Russell

I will be there from 12 if anyone else is planning to be. Hi Rachel

Interesting point. Whether it's right or wrong though, I can't change it. The ProZ.com Powwow organisation page makes you select from a 24 hour clock.

Our fellow ProZians appear to agree with ProZ.com system though, automated or otherwise: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/English/other/567249-12pm_vs_12am.html

I didn't really mean that you'd stated the time; I'd like to come, though doubt I'll be able to I'm afraid.

Next time hopefully, but in the meantime... Jan 13, 2012

Sorry to have missed this, I hope you had a good time. I'll definitely try and be there next time. In the meantime, if any of you local Cambridge translators can help me out with a few hours Trados (2007) training, I would be very grateful. I would of course be happy to pay. I've been translating for quite a while, but I'm only just starting to use Trados and some local training would be great.
