Dutch term

Lekensamenvatting

Layman's summary

Non-expert summary is fine but your original makes use of the word Leken which denotes people who are not members of the clergy, i.e. the laity. Lay summary or Layman's summary would be the literal translation.

"Summary for the Unitiated" would also serve your purposes.

Sorry, missspelling. "Summary for the Uninitiated."
Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : non-expert sounds like a translation, layman sounds like idiomatic English. seems that the assumption remains that 'anything goes' when it comes to English

Thanks, Writeaway, although IMHO non-expert is OK. Nonetheless, it CAN sound denigrating
agree Chris Hopley : fwiw, I prefer 'lay summary', e.g. http://tigger.uic.edu/depts/ovcr/research/funding/writing_su...
