Bio

As a Canadian-born child of German parents, my first language is German. I attended English-speaking schools but continued to speak German at home, as well as on frequent family visits to Germany. My bilingualism made it easier for me to learn French, and I developed a love of language. This fascination for the idiosyncrasies between languages and a desire for perfection led me to pursue languages at the undergraduate and graduate levels, eventually leading to a career in translation, technical writing and editing.

I completed my undergraduate studies in French and German. As a part of my undergraduate studies, I spent one year in France and another in Germany, which improved my language skills immensely. On my return to Canada I completed my M.A. in French, in which I focused on translation. In the five years following my graduation, I worked as a technical translator from French and German into English. During this time I received my certification from French to English through the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario.

With the advent of machine-based translation, I expanded upon my translation skills when I moved to Toronto to work closely with a division of Siemens-Nixdorf to provide technical support to customers who had purchased their translation system, tailoring the system to meet their needs.

Over the following 10 years, due to successive mergers, my job evolved into that of Technical Writer and Instructional Designer in the field of Supply Chain Management Software.

In my 10 years as a freelancer I have edited newsletters for various smaller companies and not-for-profits, edited academic works, and have also done translations for various companies and organizations.

I'm flexible with my working hours. I look forward to hearing from you!
