English term

trip off

English to French Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation
The relaying and protection requirements are different based on the mode of operation of the mini-grid, as described below.
Generation equipment contributes to circuit fault currents and need to be tripped off or isolated first.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Oct 18, 2018:
@ Kim Please do not tease! It's not the time or place.
Kim Metzger Oct 18, 2018:
Herr Gleim Why would you look for "drip of"/off?
Johannes Gleim Oct 18, 2018:
@ Tony I looked for both possibilities, "to trip off" and "to drip" of, in case of typing errors. I did not found any suitable hit with electrical context, neither in Electropedia, IATE, Merriam-Webster or The Free Online Dictionary. I concluded from that a very uncommon use und looked for circumscriptions and alternate wordings, correspondingly.

I have nothing against "disjoncter/disjoncteur" (circuit breaker) provided that the context deals with Low Voltage installations. But here we have "Power Generation" requiring special switchgears, e.g. disconnectors (sectionneurs, interrupteurs).

I am sure as electrical engineer you will underline this.
Tony M Oct 18, 2018:
@ Johannes A simple typo is understandable, but the whole point was that your argument was based on the fact it had nothing to do with 'goutte' and water, which seemed to imply you had completely misread the source term! I quote:

" "drip off" is no [sic] normal speech. Normally it means "="drop off faire égoutter, couler" "
Johannes Gleim Oct 18, 2018:
trip off Do you excuse typing errors or not?
Kim Metzger Oct 17, 2018:
Herr Gleim wrote: "drip off" is no normal speech." Absolutely! The standard term is "trip off"

disjoncter

Les générateurs doivent être disconectés du circuit. En général, pour cela, on utilise le disjoncteur spécifique à chaque groupe d'équipements.
Example sentence:

neutral Tony M : That is indeed what needs to happen — but here, they are discussing the specific methods for doing so. 'Ont besoin de...' is rather too literal here and sits uncomfortably in FR, where an impersonal expression would probably be more appropriate.

interrupter, déconnecter, sectionner

"drip off" is no normal speech. Normally it means "="drop off faire égoutter, couler", but here it means obviously "interrupter, déconnecter, sectionner".

There are different possibilities for paraphrasing the 2nd sentence:

Les générateurs de courant apportent aux (augmentent les) courants de défaut des circuits et doivent être déclenchés (coupé, interrompus, sectionné, mises hors tension) ou isolés (séparés, déconnectés) en priorité (d’abord).
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : You have missed the point of the S/T — it is talking about 2 different ways of achiving this isolation, either by using a specific isolator, or by simply tripping out the circuit-breaker provided. The latter is the aspect required here.

What is an Overload?
When in its normal operation a circuit has carried a little too much flow a little too long, so that the wires will be getting too hot to be safe, the breaker will trip off. This is called an overload -- you were trying to run a bit too much at once on that circuit. http://www.thecircuitdetective.com/glossary.php
