Spanish term

sangre gorda

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) a condition or complaint
This is another term in a list of various medical complaints - it may be an old-fashioned term. Not sure what is meant by it - wonder if it could be "thick blood", as elsewhere "thinning" of the blood is mentioned.
Should have added that the terms are from Spain.

Discussion

Sharon Heller Feb 14, 2014:
Thanks Appreciate the detailed explanation David, very helpful!
David Brown Feb 13, 2014:
Thick blood I believe that thick or thin are "lay" terms to describe a condition to patients, and medically refers to the number of platelets (thrombocytosis or thrombocythaemia), red cells (polycythaemia) and other macromolecules (cryoglobulins, lipids, etc)
Sharon Heller Feb 9, 2014:
Sangre espesa This is definitely the more common term in Spanish for thick blood. See links below, but I would like to hear opinions from medical experts too. I will do some more research.

Peer comment(s):

agree David Brown : not a very medical term, "viscous" may sound better

Yes, viscous does sound better. I was never able to find out whether there is a difference between "sangre gorda" and "sangre espesa". "Sangre espesa" seems to be the more common term in Spanish, any thoughts on this?

"thick [thickened] blood". Seems to support Sharon's proposal.

Thick blood (also known as hypercoagulability, Antiphospholipids, and Hughes Syndrome) is a condition where the blood is more viscous (thicker and stickier) than normal. The unusual increase in the thickness of blood is due to an abnormality in the clotting process.

The thickened blood hinders the circulation of oxygen, nutrients, and hormones and prevents them from being transferred successfully to tissues and cells throughout the body. This may result in widespread nutritional and hormonal deficiencies as well as Hypoxia, a condition in which cells have a low level of oxygen.
