On the first day of March, 1905, David pauses to take stock of his life. It is, he tells Amalie, a time when, more than any other moment in the 24 years he had been alive, his life is flowing “in mighty, rolling, roaring waves”. Although in earlier years he had taken his studies very seriously, now that he is facing the university exams that will determine his future, he is living as if the exams were “froth and fragrance”. He has run a zig-zag course so far, but now he is determined to make a binding decision about his life. For his career, he is weighing “the goalless rambling of being without a profession,” against “the solidity of an official position” - that is, the choice he had mentioned earlier between attempting to continue his scholarly work after he graduates, and becoming a schoolteacher.
