La tomografía de coherencia óptica (OCT) macular ha supuesto uno de los mayores avances en las técnicas diagnósticas en la subespecialidad de retina y en la oftalmología en general. La OCT permite el estudio del área central y de máxima visión de la retina, la mácula, con un detalle prácticamente histológico, pudiendo identificar varias de sus capas y, actualmente, con una muy elevada resolución, y de forma no invasiva.
