“However, what has happened in far too many of our relationships is that we have lost some of those special qualities that our wives once admired.
Instead of a man they are in love with, we become a man they are concerned about. Often they don’t know how to express their concerns, and just as often, we aren’t willing to deal with them and resolve difficulties honestly. Thus resentment flows like a fast-moving stream that erodes and undercuts the steep, soft bank of intimacy. Like a precarious stream bank, we may not notice how bad the situation has become until the bank
collapses and dumps us into the waters of marital crisis.
“Phil, like most men, your failure to honestly hear and deal with her legitimate concerns makes you less of a real man in her eyes, and when she loses respect for you, you can be certain that problems with intimacy will follow.”
“Can I get her back?”
“You can, but it depends upon your willingness to change your focus from trying to get what you want to becoming a man she can admire—one she not only loves but also to whom she loves to give herself because she is loved and appreciated. I know, Phil, because my marriage was not always what it is today.
“For years Sally had tried to visit with me, talk about her troubles and trials, and I always brushed her concerns aside as unimportant, silly, or just plain foolish. But after we moved to the wilderness I got a rude awakening when I found out that every one of those burdens she had tried to share with me had not disappeared but had simply been stuffed down and tucked away. When I was at last ready to deal with her honestly and really hear what she was saying, I had a lot of past problems to deal with. I discovered that for Sally, my time and my affirming words toward her were more important than anything else. And there was a
reason. I showed I cared by listening and hearing what she had to say and by not tuning her out. When I tuned out she knew it, and the message
she got was that she wasn’t worth hearing—that she was dumb and stupid—and why would she want to be intimate with someone who saw her that way? Only as she was heard, valued, and appreciated did she feel loved and cherished. When she felt loved, intimacy was an easy byproduct. I must confess that I had a much larger learning curve than Sally did in meeting my partner’s needs. For you see, from the start
Sally had intuitively understood that I responded best to loving acts of service, and she had done a wonderful job of meeting my needs.
“Now every person is different, and what matters to Sally or to me may not matter to you or your spouse. What is certain is that everyone
has special things they respond to. Sometimes it’s gifts, sometimes just uninterrupted time. For others it may be the tender touches of love or
a combination of things. Phil, you know your wife. What did you do when you were courting her that she loved?”

„Poţi, dar totul depinde de dispoziţia ta de a nu te mai concentra atât de mult asupra încercării de a obţine ceea ce doreşti, ci asupra încercării de a deveni un bărbat pe care să-l admire – unul pe care nu doar să-l iubească, ci unul căruia să iubească să i se dea, pentru că este iubită şi apreciată. Ştiu asta, Phil, deoarece căsnicia mea nu a fost întotdeauna cum este astăzi.
Ani de zile, Sally a încercat să menţină o relaţie bună între noi, să vorbească despre necazurile şi încercările ei, iar eu întotdeauna i-am dat la o parte îngrijorările ca fiind lipsite de importanţă, prosteşti ori de-a dreptul nebuneşti. Însă după ce ne-am mutat în sălbăticie, am avut parte de o trezire bruscă la realitate atunci când am descoperit că niciuna dintre acele poveri pe care încercase să mi le împărtăşească nu dispăruse, ci fusese pur şi simplu îndesată adânc în inimă şi ascunsă acolo. Atunci când am fost, în sfârşit, pregătit să mă ocup de ea în mod onest şi să ascult cu adevărat ce spune, a trebuit să mă confrunt cu o mulţime de probleme din trecut. Am descoperit că, pentru Sally, timpul meu şi cuvintele mele care îi confirmau faptul că sunt atent la ea erau mai importante decât orice altceva. Şi asta dintr-un motiv. Îi arătam că ţineam la ea ascultând ce avea de zis, şi nu prin lipsa mea de atenţie. Atunci când nu eram atent, ştia, iar mesajul pe care i-l transmiteam era că ea nu merita să fie ascultată – că era proastă şi tâmpită – şi atunci, de ce ar mai fi vrut să aibă relaţii intime cu cineva care o considera în felul acela? Doar atunci când era ascultată şi apreciată se simţea iubită şi preţuită. Atunci când se simţea iubită, intimitatea era un produs secundar care venea uşor. Trebuie să mărturisesc că, în comparaţie cu Sally, am avut o curbă de învăţare mult mai mare în ce priveşte modul în care să întâmpin nevoile partenerei mele. Pentru că, vezi tu, Sally înţelesese în mod intuitiv că eu răspundeam cel mai bine la actele iubitoare de servire şi îmi întâmpinase în mod minunat nevoile.
Acum, fiecare persoană este diferită şi ce contează pentru Sally sau pentru mine s-ar putea să nu conteze pentru tine sau pentru soţia ta. Un lucru e sigur: fiecare are anumite lucruri speciale la care răspunde. Uneori e vorba de daruri, alteori doar de timp lipsit de întreruperi. Pentru alţii, ar putea fi atingerile tandre de dragoste sau o combinaţie de lucruri. Phil, tu îţi cunoşti soţia. Ce anume din ce făceai tu în perioada curteniei îi plăcea?”
