Recently, when I was applying for the job of General Worker Supervisor, because of my age, I felt that I was treated unfairly. The details are as following: -
I am 58 years old this year and I work as a general worker. I responded to the job advertisement for the position of General Worker Supervisor in our company, to which I did not receive any reply. Despite being an experienced worker, I was not even given the opportunity for an interview. I later learned that a young fellow who was only 25 years of age was appointed. I complained to the company pointing out the requirements stated on the advertisement: “The ideal candidate should be young, healthy, with 4 to 5 years of work experience....” I believe this is a discrimination, as anyone aged above 30 would be automatically excluded, this holds prejudice against older workers. I requested the chairman to review my application but my request was turned down. The chairman had threatened that if I were to continue causing any trouble, he would either transfer me elsewhere or even dismiss me. I suspect that the company policy has no intention of hiring anyone above the age of 40, and certainly does not plan to execute any policy of equality and age diversity. I feel that I am being discriminated because of my age, in addition to that, I am seriously affected by the harassment from the chairman. Therefore, I believe I have the right to be compensated. I have heard that you have legislations regarding accusations on age discrimination, I would appreciate it if you would send me a copy of it. This would be very helpful when I file for compensation claims at the Employment Tribunal.
I hope that I can have your assistance.
