Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Eileen Brophy (asker) Feb 23, 2010:
Phil, I don't have the document to hand right now but it was talking about old material published by a magazine, thus I opted for background as in the background of present day material. I simply do not like historical material... Old, or previous could also be alternatives, as could prior too, simply again that I am not crazy about prior as an adjective for prior material, I tend to use prior as an adverb rather than adjective.

Background material

another option!
Peer comment(s):

disagree philgoddard : It means "old", ie historical - hence "tanto histórico como nuevo".

historical material

Historical= belonging to, or set in the past (Concise Oxford) which is what is meant here (the opposite of "nuevo")

Historic: Famous or important in history, or potentially so (no indicatioN of that here)
Note from asker:
I am perfectly aware of the meaning of historical, the question is if it is the correct term here or should I use a synonym like old or another and should it be material or issue, subject, etc. given the context.

II.3 Identification and removal of legacy material

"Each relevant course will be scrutinized to identify and remove legacy material that is outdated or tangential to the learning outcomes identified for a particular course or program. Legacy material will be identified by examining the relevance and contribution it makes to the learning outcomes."

http://jn.physiology.org/cgi/content/full/90/4/2087
"The Journal of Neurophysiology now makes available on-line its content back to 1966 through the American Physiological Society's Legacy Project, and by next year every paper published by the Journal of Neurophysiology since its inception in 1938 will be available to all individuals or libraries who pay a modest one-time fee to the APS to obtain access to the Legacy material. Making the older literature available on-line is an important step and one that I would urge all journals to undertake. These papers are important not only as historical oddities, but because they contain valuable experiments that often still need to be read, evaluated, and discussed."

Historical data

This is just another option, but I always feel it tends to cover just about all types of "material", but sounds just a bit more natural. Just my opinion.
