Spanish term

portante

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Insurance An insurance clause

"portante" as "bearing" or "carrying" doesn't seem to make sense in this context. Can anyone please help?

Helena Chavarria Mar 1, 2015:

I believe the best way to think of this is as "supporting this amount" (as in allowing for an upper limit). We use this root in English as well (portage, portable, etc) which always implies carrying and supporting a weight, in the sense of your translation it is not bearing a weight, it is supporting and allowing for a quantity. As in "The bank account is able to support a maximum transaction amount of $1,000 daily."
Example sentence:

The largest increase is included in the sum insured at first loss of the policy, considering that it supports this amount, as the maximum amount that any loss can be compensated, without being considered under-insured.

disagree Paul Stevens : This is, IMHO, absolute nonsense, and the wrong answer has been chosen.

In this case its probably a good idea to ask the client if this was a typo in this case, it makes sense to me either way but the meaning changes a bit. Their answer will most likely clarify this issue.

Assuming a typo for "por lo tanto", which would make good sense.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helena Chavarria : I've just seen a Word doc. with the identical wording, except for 'portante', which is 'por tanto'.
