Russian to English: A research project description
Source text - Russian Объект исследований - исследование твердых отходов, находящихся в отстойниках и илонакопителях действующих обогатительных фабрик.
Цель работы - вовлечение вторичных топливных ресурсов для сжигания на ТЭС Украины.
Метод исследования - анализ работы углеобогатительных фабрик Украины за период с 1958 по 2000 годы с целью установления объемов и качества выданных в илонакопители и шламовые отстойники отходов. Выполнены исследования гранулометрического, фракционного составов и качества отходов фабрик, обогащающих угли различных марок.
В Украине имеются 123,7 млн. т углесодержащих отходов, находящихся в отстойниках и илонакопителях, которые могут рассматриваться в качестве ресурсов вторичного топлива для пылевидного сжигания на электростанциях.
Translation - English Investigation object. Investigation of solid waste products in settling tanks of functioning washeries.
Purpose of the project. Involving secondary fuel resources in combustion at power stations of Ukraine.
Investigation method. Performance analysis of coal washeries of Ukraine for the period of 1958 to 2000 in order to determine the volume and quality of waste products discharged into silt and slurry settling tanks. Determinations were carried out for size distribution, fraction composition and quality of waste products from plants for preparation of different coal types.
In Ukraine there are 123.7 million tons of coal-containing waste products in settling tanks which can be regarded as secondary fuel resources for dust combustion at electric power stations.

English to Russian: A congress leaflet

India's Capital city, New Delhi is the most widely used entry point into the country, and is on the route of most major airlines. It is well linked with rail, air and road to all parts of the country. Air India is India's National Flag Carrier and has a worldwide route network connecting over 50 cities abroad with India. Indian Airlines, which is the national airline and five other private air taxi operators, serve all the metros, mini-metros and many towns of India besides almost all the tourist destinations in India.
Clothing: At the time of Congress, Delhi will be pleasant. The temperature would range from 25 - 35 degrees Celsius. Light woolen clothing may be required in the evenings.
Languages: English is commonly used in all business transactions; however, the main spoken language is Hindi. Official Language of the Congress will be English.
Currency: The currency of India is Rupee, which is 100 paise. Rupee currency comes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. The present conversation rate is 1 USD = Rs. 46 approx.
Visas: To be obtained from the Indian Missions abroad. One should possess a valid National Passport, (except in the case of Bhutanese and Nepalese citizens, who may carry only suitable means of identification). Visitors are generally required to make an oral identification of their baggage and foreign currency in their possession. For assistance, please contact International Travel House.
Immunization: Valid Yellow Fever inoculations are necessary for all delegates coming from or transiting through endemic Yellow Fever Countries.

English to Russian: An extract from a coal processing draft standard
Source text - English 6.3 Dilatometer furnace
A furnace capable of heating two or more retorts (6.6) to a temperature of 550 °C at a rate of 3 K/min.
The furnace shall comply with the following operating conditions.
Heat the furnace at a rate of 3 K/min, and measure the temperature at the standard sensing point, i.e. at a position equivalent to that of the centre of a normally sited test piece 30 mm above the internal base of a retort.
When the temperature has reached about 450 °C, measure the temperature over the lower 250 mm of the retort.
The difference between the probe temperature and the mean temperature shown at the standard temperature sensing position shall be not more than:
A suitable furnace (for heating three retorts) is illustrated in figure 2 and consists of a casting fitted with a base and a top cover.
The cover supports in a centre hole a cylindrical block of copper-aluminium alloy (CuAI10Ni5Fe4), complying with ISO 428, as manufactured (i.e. not annealed), of 65 mm diameter and 460 mm long.
The block has three holes of 380 mm minimum depth and 15,0 mm ±0,1 mm diameter, drilled as shown in figure 2.
The top surface may be insulated by an appropriately shaped piece of board.
The block is heated electrically by an insulated resistance winding, capable of raising the temperature of the block to 550 °C at a rate of 3 K/min.
6.4 Temperature controller
The temperature controller shall be a separate instrument from that used to record the rise of temperature during the test. It shall be of the automatic, programmed type capable of maintaining a mean rate of temperature rise of 3 K/min ±0,05 K/min between 250 °C and 550 °C with a variation of not more than ± 1 K per 30 K rise in any 10 min period, with a precision of ± 1 K.

Печь должна соответствовать следующим рабочим условиям.
Печь нагревают со скоростью 3 К/мин и замеряют температуру в стандартной точке чувствительности, т. е. в положении, соответствующем центру обычно расположенного испытательного бруска, на 30 мм выше внутреннего основания реторты.
Когда температура достигнет 450°C, измеряют температуру над нижними 250 мм пространства реторты.
Разница между температурой, замеренной датчиком, и средней температурой, полученной в стандартной точке чувствительности не должна превышать:
Подходящая печь (для нагревания трех реторт) представлена на рисунке 2. Она состоит из литого oснования, снабженного верхней и нижней крышками.
В центральном отверстии крышки монтируется цилиндрический блок из сплава меди и алюминия (CaAl10Ni5Fe4) в исходном виде (т.е. не прокаленный), в соответствии с ISO 428. Диаметр блока - 65 мм, длина - 460 мм.
Блок имеет три отверстия, просверленных как показано на рисунке 2. Минимальная глубина отверстий - 380 мм, диаметр - 15 мм ± 0,1 мм.
Верхняя поверхность может быть изолирована при помощи щита соответствующей формы.
Блок нагревается посредством электричества, при помощи изолированной обмотки, способной поднимать температуру блока до 550°С со скоростью 3 к/мин.
6.4 Регулятор температуры
Регулятор температуры представляет собой отдельное устройство, используемое для регистрации повышения температуры во время испытания. Регулятор должен быть автоматическим, с программным управлением, способный поддерживать среднюю скорость повышения температуры 3 К/мин ± 0,05 К/мин в диапазоне от 250°С до 550°С с отклонением не более ± 1К на повышение температуры на 30 К за любые 10 мин, с точностью измерения ± 1 К.

Since as a student I majored in linguistics and literature (Master's Degree in English and Bachelor's Degree in Russian) I have a passion for translating ficrion, drama and poetry. But I also spent 8 years working for Ukrainian Technical Committee for Standardization "Coal and Products of Its Processing", translating international standards and draft standards in coal sampling, preparation and analysis (English>Russian) as well as the company's business correspondence with other standardization organizations like ISO (English>Russian, Russian>English). Thus, my main fields of expertise are general literature and coal processing. However, having been a free-lance translator for a few years by now I've been challenged with all kinds of projects outside the fields of my expertise. I'm open for new challenges and learning opportunities.
