Japanese term

Japanese to English Science Manufacturing Quality Control
Can anyone confirm for me whether this term can sometimes be generally translated as "appearance" or "presence" of, rather than "adhesion" or "attachment of".

The context is a quality control checklist for a glass product. The checklist describes critical, major, and minor defects. The term appears multiples times in the defect descriptions in phrases such as "血痕の付着", "ガラス片の付着". It seems odd to translate these as "adhesion/attachment of bloodstains/glass particles".
