Italian term

La storia riscuote sempre i suoi debiti

Italian to English Art/Literary History Social commentary
From the preface of a novel, where the author is talking about various problems affecting the world - terrorism, environmental disasters - and how we can go about solving them. I understand the meaning here - the past always catches up with us, sooner or later, mistakes will always have to be paid for, later down the line, but I was just wondering if there was a neater way of putting the part in asterisks.

Thanks in advance for any input.

"***La storia riscuote sempre i suoi debiti***. E quelli che abbiamo accumulato negli ultimi anni sono ahimè ormai pesanti come macigni."

The debts of the past always catch us with us.... will fit with the following sentence. Or begin it with "And the debts we've accumulated..."
James (Jim) Davis May 19, 2016:
The past always catches up with us I vote for this one.
Elena Aclasto May 19, 2016:
I was thinking the same Fiona, your proposal sounds just perfect to me ;-)
Kate Chaffer May 18, 2016:
The past always catches up with us I presume Fiona can't use that as it wouldn't fit with the second sentence.
James (Jim) Davis May 18, 2016:
Can't think of anything neat and closer to the original than your ideas. However, trying to brainstorm: two ideas come to mind, one is "as history teaches us" followed by your "the past... " or by "everything has its price..." or
Another line of thinking is "the sins of the fathers" but of course it is the Bible not history doing the teaching.

agree with Tom: you totally nailed it, Fiona.

Your own translation is fine! What's wrong with " the past always catches up with us"?

I can't think of anything better ! Go for it !

the past claims its due

Though actually I like your "past catches us with us" too.

In history mistakes are always paid for

sooner or later!

Along the lines of your own thoughts, this is how I would phrase it-and if we are talking about politics, war, ecology and the like it should fit. Similar concept to when Santayana said those who ignore history are doomed to repeat its mistakes!
