German term

Faden

German to English Tech/Engineering Metallurgy / Casting Care of butchers\' knives
From a document about knife steels - Faden are some sort of unwanted byproduct of the knife-grinding process.

Does anyone know how Faden should be translated in this particular context?

Thanks

burr / thread

Grat and Faden are basically the same thing.

A curved burr will form towards the other side of the knife, which will remain after the last sharpening movement. However, only a very fine burr forms with alternate sharpening (also known as a thread), which is removed by bending it back and forth.

agree Ramey Rieger (X) : But burr is also good!//As I understand it, burrs are the small fragments of metal and threads are the, duh, threads. The first is like the burrs that stick to your clothes when you walk over fields, the second like longish, thin shavings.

Thanks, Ramey. Actually I'd never heard of thread in this context!
