johaina (asker) Dec 22, 2008:
Stephen Chalk Dec 19, 2008:
"vacataires" wider than "éducation nationale"? As far as I was aware, the principal use of the term "vacataires" was for replacement/supply teachers - very often not possessing the CAPES teaching qualification - in the French national school system. However, Sheila is pointing out I think that the term is much wider than this. So either the translation should avoid being too need specific as she says... or more context would be needed to find the best translation.
Sheila Wilson Dec 19, 2008:
May need to beware of being too specific These contracts have various uses: they are often used as a means for a school teachers to find extra work over and above their full-time job (eg during the school holidays or supply teaching); but they are also used by educational establishments as a means of bringing in professionals eg a business person doing a few hours in a university passing on some words of wisdom. These people are not necessarily teachers.

adjunct contract (visiting teacher/professor)

Hello,

This is a just like a visiting professor/teacher. However, they can be renewed.

vacation = short-term/temporary/visiting

I hope this helps.
Peer comment(s):

agree liz cencetti (X) : More or less, yes. In a higher ed college they teach part time there while having a full time job in a school (lycée usually). Pay awful (and only twice a year), renewable as often as wanted, but easily disposable if no longer needed. (Bin there!)

Thanks, liz!
agree Andrew Mason : Not sure I've heard adjunct used like this in UK English, it may well be a US expression. But, there is no requirement for a vacation to have any time limit on it nor involve replacement. My wife has had vacations for 15 years and replaces no-one

Thanks, Andrew!
agree Stephen Chalk : I get the impression that this is more for American English than for British?

Thanks, Stephen. That's what I gather.

temporary work contract

A vacation is often a teaching job in replacement of a teacher
Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Chalk : this is also possible actually. It's factual. Appropriate to certain types of schools I would say (e.g. summmer schools for example or TEFL etc.) I guess johaina who has the full details will have to judge! Would you agree with supply teaching contract?

I would agree, yes! I often work with "vacation "contracts either for Education nationale or for private schools

Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Chalk : Hello Ahmed, I see you already had "Supply Teacher Contracts". Sorry! Sheila Wilson above suggests that "vacataire" is a wider term than just supply teaching. Given context I think Supply Teaching/Teacher Contract for British use.

It's ok Stephen :)
agree Martin Cassell : with "Supply Teaching/er contract"
