"U" is an abbreviation of voltage.
I can only imagine they mean that power cannot be connected to the top of the light fitting but has to be connected beneath or at the side, but the Fr. is hardly very clear.

Soit être vissé dans le sens contraire, soit recevoir une ampoule en forme de U ???
Sans illustration, je ne peux qu'imaginer, mais ... à tout hasard, il s'agit peut-être déjà d'une traduction (to take a U ...) ... retrouvable en googlant quelques mots-clés
