Well, it is not, what you wrote before.
Marian Greenfield Mar 15, 2005:
ahh... a little more context makes a difference... in that case rip or tear would be appropriate...

E.g. If a nail protrudes from a board, when a man passes by, his clothes are caught by the nail....

yea
neutral Mikhail Kropotov : You cannot rip a piece of clothing *with* something - the verb is transitive +++ Actually, I just saw that that's just a minor detail. However, I still don't like ripped. A material may rip by itself -- without a sharp object.

I have no idea what you are trying to say
agree JeffFish (X) : for the asker's example: The nail rips the cloth. Transitive, like SirReaL said

rip or tear? rip sounds like making a sound; tear sound like crying - I suppose it depends on the meaning one wants to project.

Peer comment(s):

disagree JeffFish (X) : How can you be so sure of this? Puncture means "penetrate" (poke through) in the examples you cited. Clothing that is penetrated isn't necessarily damaged. jianming is looking for a term for damage to clothing.
5 mins
Well, if you don't think an object poking through a garment is considered damage.....
neutral Mikhail Kropotov : what if a sharp object only scratches the material +++ a puncture is a different form of damage from a rip or a tear, the latter being all the more critical in terms of wearability
36 mins
well, that would be abrade..... and now that we're given a bit more context, yes, rip or tear would be more appropriate

tear

given the additional context, either rip or tear works... but tear is just slightly more formal.
