: You cannot rip a piece of clothing *with* something - the verb is transitive +++ Actually, I just saw that that's just a minor detail. However, I still don't like ripped. A material may rip by itself -- without a sharp object.

: How can you be so sure of this? Puncture means "penetrate" (poke through) in the examples you cited. Clothing that is penetrated isn't necessarily damaged. jianming is looking for a term for damage to clothing.

well, that would be abrade..... and now that we're given a bit more context, yes, rip or tear would be more appropriate
