Spaced retrieval

English to Greek Medical Psychology
Spaced retrieval
Spaced retrieval (SR) is a memory intervention technique that gives individuals with memory deficits practice at successfully recalling important information over progressively longer intervals of time. Clinical research using SR has demonstrated that individuals with Alzheimer's disease can be taught to remember compensatory strategies that help facilitate safety and greater levels of independence.
The use of this technique has helped individuals with memory impairments learn how to use a daily calendar, to effectively and safely use adaptive equipment, to remember the names of objects and items related to basic and medical needs, to perform activities of daily living at higher levels of independence and to learn safer swallowing behaviours (Brush & Cameron 1998).

...The information to be learned is presented, and then retrieved through questioning. The interval between presentation and questioning is increased as the client becomes more successful in retaining the information. For example, from 5 seconds to 10, then 20, 30, 40, and 60 seconds, and then by 30 second intervals. If the client cannot retrieve the information after an increase in the interval, the interval is reduced back to the level at which the client had been successful...

...According to Camp and McKitrick (1999), spaced-retrieval is a method in which information that is to be remembered is repeatedly retrieved at increasingly longer intervals of time...
...The schedule is expanded after successful recall with the objective of helping the individual to remember the information for longer and longer periods of time. Beginning with a 30-second interval of remembering, individuals might, over time, have the ability to recall specific information for weeks or even months.
In Mrs. G.’s case, a trainer might provide the following prompt question: “What is your daughter’s name?” The trainer then instructs Mrs. G. to say, “Elizabeth.” If Mrs. G. has difficulty remembering her daughter’s name when prompted again, the trainer can put the answer on a cue card. If Mrs. G. cannot answer the prompt, she can turn over the card and read the answer. Each session ends with the resident providing the correct answer and a “thank you” from the trainer for participating in the day’s session. According to Dr. Camp, when the SR interval reaches 12 minutes, the information has been successfully transferred to the resident’s long-term memory...

...In SR training, the clinician asks a question and requires an immediate response from the client. The interval between recall opportunities is systematically lengthened during training sessions until the client demonstrates recall of information in everyday situations. For example, the clinician may ask the client "How can you find out what to do today?" and the client has to answer "Look at my calendar." The client then must recall this information over increasingly longer time intervals. In some cases, the verbal response is paired with the demonstration of a procedure or skill; in this case, the procedure of checking a calendar...
