English term

Best before

English to Arabic Other Nutrition diary
Best before

Manufactured: 240 days prior to best before date.

A good expression is needed

It is mentioned under a nutrient content of a food product . No date is mentioned beside. It is repeated in every food type . I know its meaning. What are your best suggestions ?

Thanks to all of you for your great efforts.

Ali Alawadi Jun 21, 2007:
يا أخ زاكس
حقيقة أن لا أعلم لم هذا الإصرار على إدخال ترجمة خطأ للمصطلح و الإبقاء عليها لاسيما و أن الأخت لميس والأستاذ فؤاد قد أوردا ترجمتين أصح وأدق... فضلاً عدِّل ترجمة المصطلح كي لا يستعين به أحد الزملاء و هو خطأ.. شكرا جزيلا
Lamis Maalouf Jun 18, 2007:
...by a noun or an attached pronoun referring to it.
Example: توجد مدن كثيرة ولكن دمشق أقدمها
Lamis Maalouf Jun 18, 2007:
For Zax: In English, there are two degrees of comparison: The comparative and the superlative degrees. In Arabic, both degrees are indicated by a single pattern أفعل. For comparative we use من but for superlative we don't, but it is followed immediately..
Fathy Shehatto (asker) Jun 18, 2007:
Already contacted the moderator. Dear Mr Sam,

Thanks for your advice. I have already written to Mr Alla zeidan. Seems he is not available. sorry again for the mistake.
zax Jun 18, 2007:
الاجابه تقول "أفضلها/أحسنها" ولا تقول "أفضل من/أحسن من"وبالتمعن في كافة الاجابات نجد أنها تنصب في الاجابه أعلاه
Sami Khamou Jun 18, 2007:
Dear Fathy, mistakes can happen. But mistakes can be corrected by the moderator. I am sure my friend Zax wouldn't mind if you want to correct the mistake and give the points to the right answerer.
Lamis Maalouf Jun 17, 2007:
Mistakes happen. I wouldn't have minded if it was a right answer, but it is completely wrong. ما هو الضمير المتصل في أفضل وأحسن وعلامَ يعود؟
Lamis Maalouf Jun 16, 2007:
Yes sir. I am glad you understood me. I wish I could take some Assyrian lessons! ܒܣܝܡܐ ܪܐܒܐ
Sami Khamou Jun 16, 2007:
Dear Lamis you wrote "Thank you very much" in Assyrian or Syriac using Hebrew characters. In Syriac characters that would be ܒܣܝܡܐ ܪܐܒܐ

Dear Zac, these points were awarded to you by mistake, good luck.
Sorry Zax not Zac :)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Lamis Maalouf : "Best" in English doesn’t necessarily mean comparing something with other things.

الاجابه تقول" أفضلها/ أحسنها"ولا تقول "أحسن من/ أفضل من"ا اذا فالمقارنه هنا بنفس الشيء ف مدد مختلفه
disagree Ali Alawadi : Sorry Zax; but your translation is actually wrong. "Best" in this context is a superlative not of "good" but rather of "well", meaning "in the best way" and "to the best advantage". Your translation reads "their best"/"the best", but "the best" of what?!

disagree Ahmed Hamdy : ترجمة حرفية لا تعبر عن المعنى المطلوب إطلاقًا

يُفضّل استهلاكه قبل

There is a big difference between expiration date (تاريخ انتهاء الصلاحية)and best before (date). The second is more used to express the quality of food, so it will not be expired but it will lose its freshness and flavor. You will not find a date since the date will be stamped after packaging.

Sorry sister Lamis, points were awarded to Mr Zac by mistake . Really, he is a lucky man.
It seems I'm not ok today.
you are right. Best for refers to a period of time in which a Cheese still has its natural characteristics " taste, flavor, and odor "

شكراً أخي علي، كان جوابي صحيحاً لو لم يكن التعبير مسبوقاً ب"صنع قبل" ومتبوعاً بالمدة. أظن أن الزميل فؤاد وضع الجواب الأمثل

English term (edited): best-before date

تاريخ انتهاء مدة أوج الجودة

The expression "best-before," as used here, is a modifier of the noun date. It is not, as commonly used, the predicate in the implied sentence "This is best [used, consumed, or enjoyed] before [such and such a date]." Therefore the translation ought to reflect the source text structure, which should have hyphenated the phrase.

I suggest
تاريخ انتهاء مدة أوج الجودة

Manufactured: 240 days prior to best before date.
صُنع قبل انتها مدة أوج الجودة بمدة 240 يوماً
Peer comment(s):

agree Lamis Maalouf : Mr. Yahya, I admit that you are right. I am convinced by your explanation.
