Grace Anderson (asker) Aug 25, 2007:
Hi Kim and writeaway: As I put in the heading, they are fringe benefits/incentives given by employers to employees to pay for meals and snacks. They used to be tax free in the UK but I don't think that is the case any more. They are used quite extensively here in Italy where they are called "buoni pasto".
writeaway Aug 25, 2007:
Hi Grace-who are the vouchers for ? schools, tourists, employees?
Kim Metzger Aug 25, 2007:

meal voucher

John Hack and some friends were lunching together when he noticed people paying for their meals with slips of paper. Being curious, he asked a waiter about this and was told that the restaurant had arrangements with various companies whereby their employees could use these printed slips to pay for their meals. The restaurant then sent the slips back to each company who would then pay the restaurant.
This process involved any company who wanted to subsidise their staff lunches, but not run a canteen. However they had to have vouchers printed, make arrangements with two or three restaurants, check and count the vouchers when returned and then send a cheque to settle the catering establishment's account.

lunch voucher

Below is one example. I thing there were even UK websites which used "lunch voucher". In addition, I would not find "luncheon voucher" particularly strange or incomprehesible.

agree JaneTranslates : If it's limited to "luncheon," i.e. the noon meal, then this option is exactly right. Otherwise, either "meal ticket" or "meal voucher" would also be fine, and completely natural in U.S. English.

Yes, I even have had a "food voucher" from an airline whenthere was a long delay. However, if it means only the midday meal, then lunch is US-Eng.

meal ticket

... that's what we used to call them at JP Morgan..

although neither lunch voucher or meal voucher would sound odd to me... meal is probably more appropriate if it can be used any time of day.

coupon redeemable at a restaurant and entitling the holder to a meal

meal coupon

I think 'coupon' would be used in the US in place of 'voucher' in this case. Also 'lunch coupon'
Peer comment(s):

neutral JaneTranslates : I'm not saying you're wrong...but I've never heard "meal coupon." Usually I think of coupons as something that gives you a certain amount off the price; a voucher or ticket gets it for me with no out-of-pocket payment. But the US is a big country...
