But more and more of these are beginning to adopt the title of "high schools" (grades 7 through 12). In any case, Jianjun's suggestions are good. It's more common to say No. 1, etc. for schools / hospitals, even though it sounds wierd in Eng.

The translations are never consistent on the mainland (because it started off with some bad translations in the past when things first opened up in China). Many schools (high schools, in US sense) used to be called middle schools...

I think the reason to use No. 1 is because actually there could be a No. 63 Middle School, No. 101 or even more than that. Using 101st Middle School may sound a little awkward though. :) anyway it's Chinese system.

Thank you for your very useful information. I am doing some proofreading and the current version is "first". But the 1st few google hits say it's "No. 1", so i just want to be sure.

Well, it's hard to say. No. 1 is used prevailingly in Tianjin at least. I don't know if it's common in Beijing or other Chinese cities. I used to teach in Tianjin No. 3 middle school, so it is so. :D

FYI

In mailand China, we usually use Pin Yin to transliterate school names. 一中 is No. One Middle school.
