Adygs or Circassians (endonym - adyge) - general name of a single ethnic group in Russian and abroad, divided in Soviet times into Adygeans, Kabardians Circassians (residents of Karachay-Cherkessia) and Shapsugs. Autochthonous population of Kabardino-Balkaria,
Often Adygs (Circassians) include Ubykhs (self- named "peh", "b'eh"), including published in in the late XEX - early XX centuries. Encyclopedia of Brockhaus and Efron, but, mentioning that it was "one of the Circassian tribes", "very mixed in its composition". However, some researchers, particularly, famous anthropologist, linguist, caucasologist L.Y. L'Huillier, who perfectly knew the Circassian language and compiled in the 1820s the first adygsky alphabet based on Cyrillic, believed that "Ubykhs speak a special language, which don't have any similarity with the Circassian or the Abkhazian." Nevertheless, most Ubykhs spoke on Abadzekh dialect of Circassian (Adyghe) language. Many authors of XIX century noted that in the midst of Ubykhs not even heard their language because of the "general Circassian usage".
Soviet sources determine Ubykhs as people, related by language, culture and way of life to Abkhazians, Circassians, Abazians, and refer Ubykhs language to Abkhazo-Circassian languages. In conclusion about ethnonym “Circassian" and toponym “Cercassia", made in 2010 by the head of Caucasian Department, University of Ethnology and Anthropology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, doctor of historical sciences, professor S.A. Arutyunov noted, that “current Ubykhs ’ descendants, or those, who consider themselves as such (which recorded the 2002 year census in Russia), are carriers of general Cercassian identity■ shares Circassian (Adyghes) cultural traditions and identify themselves with main part of modem Circassian (Adyghe) people”.
Abroad, ethnonym “Cercassian" continues to be used regarding descendants of Circassian (Adyghe) Muhadjirs, and also descendants of the Circassian (Adyghe) Mamelukes who ruled Egypt and Syria from (1390 to 1517), living in Adyghes’ diaspora. Etnonim Circassian and toponym Circassia beginning from the ХІП century- used to refer to the Adyghe people and their country in the North Kavkaze. As a result of the Russian- Caucasian war, administrative reforms in Russian empire in XIX century, and later in USSR, Circassian (Adyghe) people in their homeland are represented by numerous enclaves, most of them are administratively and geographically grouped into four array, called Shapsugs, Adyghes, Circassians (residents of Karachay-Cherkessia).
