В 1960-е годы сюрреализм становится ведущим направлением в среде представителей неофициального искусства, хотя в западном искусстве того же времени он теряет актуальность и постепенно растворяется в массовой культуре. Советские художники искали в сюрреализме альтернативные возможности формообразования и способы создания новых визуальных языков. Парадокс советской культуры: в то время как западные сюрреалисты 1920-1930-х годов использовали эстетику научной иллюстрации для того, чтобы развенчивать миф о техническом прогрессе, советские сюрреалисты 1960-х стремились объединить художественные открытия с научными открытиями и разработками в области физики, биологии, кибернетики. И хотя на официальной художественной сцене сюрреализм был практически невозможен в варианте картин или скульптур, сюрреалистическая эстетика была вполне приемлема в оформлении научно-популярных изданий, и ряд художников протаскивали её «контрабандой» в иллюстрациях, сделанных в частности для таких журналов как «Знание-сила». Отечественным искусством сюрреализм был воспринят как состоявшаяся целостность вне учёта его внутренней стилистической динамики. Это предопределило многоликость почти синхронно возникших, ориентированных на альтернативную реальность фантазмов, грёз и сновидений. В практике советских художников сюреалистическая поэтика предметных и телесных трансформаций сочеталась со стремлением к абстракции и сплаву образа и текста, что отчасти перекликалось с идеями «автоматического письма» французских сюрреалистов. Впрочем, у советского сюрреализма были и свои собственные корни – литературный абсурдизм 1920-х, связанный с практикой Даниила Хармса и поэтов группы ОБЭРИУ. В сознании «шестидесятников» текстовые фантасмагории Хармса органично накладывались на сюрреалистическую визуальность, как это происходит в ранней работе Ильи Кабакова «Дух-Душа-Тело», открывающей путь к концептуалистских интерпретациям образов.
Translation - English FROM SURREALISM TO CONCEPTUALISM: PAINTING AND GRAPHIC ART
In the 1960s, Surrealism became the movement of choice among representatives of unofficial art, although in the western art of that period it lost its relevance and gradually dissolved into mainstream culture. In surrealism, Soviet artists sought alternative possibilities for exploring new forms and ways of creating new visual languages. This was the paradox of Soviet culture: whereas the western surrealists of the 1920s and '30s had employed an aesthetic of scientific illustration in order to debunk the myth of technological progress, the Soviet surrealists of the 1960s strived to unite artistic breakthroughs with scientific discoveries and new developments in physics, biology and cybernetics. And although in the official art scene it was practically impossible to embrace Surrealism in paintings or sculptures, the surrealist aesthetic certainly lent itself to being adopted by scientific and popular publications, and numerous artists managed to sneak it through as 'contraband' in the form of illustrations, particularly in such journals as 'Knowledge is strength'. These marginal graphic works served in the long term as one of the most important resources in terms of forming an aesthetic for the Moscow school of Conceptualism, and several of its leading representatives preserved the surrealist 'gene' in their works forever. By way of comparison: the systems introduced by Joseph Kosuth - the founder of western Conceptualism – can also be traced back to René Magritte's surrealist flights of fancy.
Surrealism was seen by the Russian art world as a single whole, something that had already taken place, regardless of its internal stylistic dynamics. The fantasies, dreams and imaginings which sprang up almost simultaneously, and which were focused on an alternative reality, were of a diversity that had thus been predetermined. In the work of Soviet artists, the surrealist poetics of the transformation of objects and bodies was combined with a striving for abstraction and the merging of the image and the text, resulting in a partial overlap with the 'automatic letter' ideas of the French surrealists. Incidentally, Soviet Surrealism had roots of its own, as well: the literary absurdism of the 1920s, linked to the work of Daniil Kharms and the OBERIU group of poets. To the minds of the 'men of the sixties', the textual phantasmagorias of Kharms chimed with the surrealist vision, as is the case in the early work of Ilya Kabakov, 'Dukh-Dusha-Telo' ('Spirit-Soul-Body'), which opened up a path to the conceptualised interpretation of forms.

Sur le plateau où a commencé le tournage du remake de Voyage en Italie, le metteur-en-scène a la sensation de se retrouver dans une cage face à deux tigres. Ses deux stars, qui sont toutes les deux en compétition au festival de Cannes, tournent leur première scène d’amour. Leurs lèvres se touchent. L’opérateur du son entend battre violemment leur cœur. Cameramen, techniciens, machinistes, attachés de presse, figurants sont tétanisés: la foudre vient littéralement de tomber aux pieds des deux fauves. Prêts à se déchirer quelques minutes plus tôt – il lui reproche de le snober, elle de jouer son rôle de « riche et beau à mourir » - ils sont visiblement hypnotisés l’un par l’autre. Aimantés par ce baiser qui n’a rien d’un baiser de cinéma et dure au-delà du raisonnable.
Avec sa filmographie parfaite, elle incarne déjà la star des stars de ce culte païen que la cité des anges a inventé : l’adoration des étoiles. Quant à lui, héritier un brin désinvolte d’une tribu qui s’est illustrée de Washington à Wall Street, sa carrière a subi quelques trous d’air ; compensés par sa présence quasi quotidienne dans la presse people, aux côtés des plus glamoureuses de la planète mode ou cinéma.
Montée des marches
Les rumeurs les plus folles ont déjà commencé à circuler à Cannes où les deux stars, qui ont interrompu le tournage, sont attendues pour la montée des marches. L’un est au Martinez, l’autre au Carlton et leurs attachés de presse s’arrachent les cheveux. Quand elle descend de sa Rolls, c’est l’émeute. Elle porte une robe en faille de soie bleu nuit qu’un grand couturier a conçue pour elle; une fine résille brodée d’un nuage de brillants retombe doucement sur son front. Lui se tient à une distance respectable, il n’a qu’un second rôle dans le film qu’ils présentent. Mais une chose est sûre : il est déjà amoureux fou. 43 carats assortis à ses yeux
Le lendemain, il se rend à la seule adresse qui vaille pour ce néo-dandy qui s’est toujours contenté du meilleur: Bulgari, sur la Croisette. La boutique a fermé ses portes pour le laisser seul. En un éclair, il choisit la star de la nouvelle collection, créée d’après un sublime sautoir des sixties ayant appartenu à une divine aux yeux bleus à couper le souffle, « comme les siens ». Avant leur départ de Cannes, prévu le lendemain, il lui a proposé un souper à deux au large du cap d’Antibes, à bord d’un yacht loué pour l’occasion. Il compte lui demander de l’épouser dès la fin du tournage.
C’est au Sri Lanka que Bulgari a trouvé ce saphir exceptionnel qu’il va lui passer autour du cou. Ce coussin de 43 carats en forme de pain de sucre fait partie de ces miracles de la nature que convoitent les « chasseurs » de pierres d’exception. Même dans l’obscurité, sa clarté et son éclat perdurent. Quelques petits éléments coniques sont disposés autour de lui comme un éventail. Les gouttes de saphir parfaitement calibrées qui composent le collier, rehaussées de diamants, confèrent à l’ensemble une grande légèreté.
Le pendant en platine, diamants et saphirs en forme de corolle a été réalisé en « tremblant », et renvoie aux prouesses joaillières des années dolce vita de Bulgari: une gamme de broches extraordinaires, au thème floral, dont la monture, pourvue de mécanismes à ressorts, « tremblait » au moindre souffle. On the plateau on which they had begun filming the remake of Journey to Italy, the artistic director is overcome by a feeling of having been caged in with two wild tigers. With her perfect filmography, she already embodies the 'star of stars' of this pagan cult invented by the city of angels: hero-worship. As for him - the rather laid-back heir to a family that has earned renown from Washington to Wall Street, his career has suffered several setbacks; but this is more than made up for by his almost daily coverage in the popular press, alongside the most glamorous stars of the silver screen or the catwalk.
Climbing the steps
Wild rumours have already begun to circulate in Cannes, where the two stars, who have called a halt to the shoot, are expected for their formal arrival, when they will walk up the famous staircase. One is staying at the Martinez, the other at the Carlton, and their press attachés are tearing their hair out. When she steps out of her Rolls, there are riotous scenes. She is wearing a dark-blue, silk faille dress, custom-made by a designer; a fine-laced hairnet, brocaded with a cloud of diamonds, falls gently over her forehead. For his part, he maintains a respectable distance; he plays only a supporting role in the film they are presenting. But one thing's for sure: he is already head-over-heels in love. He senses that it might just be the real deal this time...but he's going to need to pull out all the stops. Throughout the whole evening, they can't take their eyes off each other. The dance of desire has begun.
43 carats before her eyes
The next day, this neo-dandy turns up at the only address which matters to him now. He has always enjoyed the best: Bulgari, on the Croisette. The boutique has closed for business, to give him some space. In a flash of inspiration, he opts for the star of the new collection, based on a sublime chain from the sixties which belonged to a goddess with breath-taking blue eyes, "just like hers". Before their departure for Cannes, scheduled for the next day, he invites her to have dinner with him on the cap of Antibes, aboard a yacht specially hired for the occasion. He plans to propose to her once the shoot is over.
It was in Sri Lanka that Bulgari found the exceptional diamond he plans to slip around her neck. This 43 carat cushion, shaped like a sugar-loaf, is one of those miracles of nature so coveted by those who like to go 'hunting' for exceptional gem-stones. Even in the half-light, its brightness and dazzling beauty are evident. It has small conical elements dotted around it, like a train. The necklace consists of some perfectly-sized sapphire droplets, backed up with diamonds, which confer a wonderful lightness of touch on the ensemble.
The platinum pendant, and the diamonds and sapphires shaped like a corolla, were designed to have a 'trembling' effect, and recall the great feats of jewellery of Bulgari's dolce vita years: an extraordinary array of brooches with a floral theme, the backing for which, with its spring mechanisms, 'trembles' at the slightest breath of air. It is that same incredibly delicate shuddering that Bulgari has recreated in this poem in precious stones - like an homage to the female star, before whose devastating light he has decided to succumb.
It is midnight on board ship. They get ready to retire to their respective palaces, purely for the sake of form - for the whole world is already in on their secret. Не обязательно скучать на переполненных пляжах. Те, кто не побоится сойти с проторенных путей, увидят совсем иную Хорватию
Мы плывем уже четвертый час, а острова все нет. За бортом парома медленно тянутся поросшие колючим густым кустарником неприступные холмы, скалы из бежеватого камня, одинокие яхты, лысые макушки гор, новые скалы и новые острова.
Публика постепенно меняется: пропадают большие итальянские семьи с детьми. Шаркая сланцами, выгружается стайка бэкпэкеров. Вялые, обгоревшие на солнце туристы расползаются по сетевым отелям, к аниматорам, бассейнам и шведским столам. Их места занимают аборигены с дочерна загорелыми лицами, увесистым багажом и ленцой в глазах. Пока паром швартуется на очередном острове, успеваю разглядеть пирс с горсткой ржавых баркасов, десяток черепичных крыш, приземистую колокольню и пару помятых пальм. Появление парома – событие, и к причалу, кажется, вышел весь остров.
Еще в XII веке монахи- бенедиктинцы устроили на острове экологическую катастрофу, соединив пресноводное Большое озеро с соленым морем. За века экосистема острова восстановилась, а канал пригодился, чтобы выходить по нему в море на каяке, каноэ или обычном водном велосипеде
Нарядные аборигены заглядывают в иллюминаторы, дети кричат, волны бьются о берег. Наматывая круги по брусчатке, носится одинокий велосипедист...

Начинает темнеть. Алый, полыхающий по всему горизонту адриатический закат сменяется синими сумерками, паром издает длинный гудок, меняет курс и разворачивается носом в открытое море. Я окончательно не понимаю, где мы и куда плывем. И мне точно страшно.
Вообще-то Хорватия – последнее место в мире, где может потеряться даже совсем нерадивый турист. По оценке ЮНЕСКО, здесь самый низкий уровень преступности в Европе, хорватский язык похож на русский настолько, что при желании понимать друг друга можно без словаря, а в сезон любой отрезок побережья заполнен людьми. Из-за последнего факта мы и отправились в путь.
В Хорватии живут чуть больше 4 млн человек, но летом к каждому из них прибавляется еще по три – с фотоаппаратами и надувными матрасами наперевес. Пытаться найти нетуристические места в одной из самых туристических стран мира казалось сомнительной затеей. Вопрос решался просто: мы взяли карту и наугад ткнули в один из 1185 принадлежащих Хорватии островов. Выпал Млет. О Млете мы не знали ровным счетом ничего. Туристические форумы хранили молчание. Lonely Planet называл остров «раем Адриатики», но в подробности не вдавался. В русском путеводителе было сказано только одно: Млет существует.
...Паром подошел к берегу совсем ночью. С палубы было видно несколько домиков и крошечное кафе. Сразу за столиками начинались поросшие густым лесом горы, разбегались вверх по склонам темные пустые шоссе. Паром ткнулся носом в берег, матросы, позевывая, спустили трап. Немногочисленные пассажиры подхватили свои баулы, спрыгнули на землю и растворились во тьме. Причал вновь стал безлюден, свет в кафе выключился, тишина накрыла нас, как подушкой. Перспектива ночевки на пляже приблизилась вплотную.
Нашего спасителя звали Бранко. Бранко с приятелем лениво допивали пиво на пороге кафе, когда я налетела на них вихрем, слезно умоляя помочь мне найти такси и отель.
– Куда езжай, моя езжай, – быстро сориентировался Бранко, с трудом подбирая английские слова. – Жить ходи, ночевать ходи, у меня будешь жить, апартаменты дешево, да-а?
Чувствуя себя на ташкентском базаре и в Неаполе одновременно, мы обнаружили, что Бранко уже кладет наши чемоданы в багажник раздолбанного «Фиата», рассовывает нас по сиденьям, отмахивается от вопросов о цене и, сорвавшись с места, мчится куда-то в ночь. Деревня называлась Собра. В темноте было видно единственную улицу с морем по одну сторону и рядом домов по другую.
Апартаменты Бранко оказались большим коттеджем на берегу, половину которого он сдавал. Коттедж был просторным, комнаты – уютными, вход – отдельным, цена – смешной.
– Пляж тут, – Бранко махнул рукой куда-то на балкон. – Мини-маркет там, – взмах туда же. – Конобы (хорватский вариант таверны – прим. ред.) сразу за мини-маркетом.
В первой лучше мясо, во второй – пицца.
Он развернулся и пошел к двери.
– А рыба? – робко окликнула я.
– А рыбу я не люблю, – смутился Бранко и захлопнул дверь.
Утром солнце ворвалось в дом, наплевав на ставни. Стоило распахнуть окно, как свет залил комнату. Я вышла на балкон. Подо мной не было ничего кроме моря – того нереально-бирюзового оттенка, какой обычно встречается только в рекламных проспектах тропических островов. Вся деревня состояла из двух рядов выбеленных солнцем каменных домиков и дороги вдоль моря. Сев на обочину, можно было свесить ноги в теплую Адриатику и пялиться на горизонт. У берега разбросаны круглые мелкие острова, дальше, сквозь синюю дымку, виднелась ломаная линия холмов полуострова Пелешац.
На скамейке у единственной улицы-дороги скучали, разглядывая прохожих, местные мужики. Женщина сметала с балкона листья дикого винограда, попутно переругиваясь с кем-то в доме. Внизу прогрохотал грузовик. Водитель остановился поздороваться с мужиками, затем с женщиной, затем с продавцом магазина, затем cел в ближайшей конобе и до вечера, кажется, уже не вставал.
Пляж оказался небольшим выступом скалы с уходящими в воду перилами, зато мы были на нем одни. Мини- маркет – магазин типа «сельпо», где стояли рядом тазы, шампуни и йогурты, а также свежие багеты, сыры, круглые желтые дыни, домашний песто и убедительная коллекция хорватских вин.
Столы конобы выстроились вдоль дороги со стороны моря. Список пицц в меню мог бы составить гордость итальянского пиццайоло, а блюд в разделе «Рыба» было больше, чем дней нашего отпуска.
За конобами обнаружилась рыбная лавка. По утрам к ее дверям причаливали потертые, пропахшие морем баркасы. Блестела на солнце серебристая чешуя, звенели пересыпаемые в мешок ракушки, весело переговаривались бородатые рыбаки. Сдав улов, они чистили зубы и умывались, стоя посреди своих посудин, а порой ложились на палубе вздремнуть.
Привычное для Хорватии ощущение курорта пропадало напрочь. Остров оказался идиллической сельской глушью: жизнерадостной, колоритной, с налетом приморской лени и удивительным вкусом к жизни.
Расположенный неподалеку от Дубровника, остров Корчула четыре века принадлежал Венецианской республике, что могло плачевно сказаться на местных жителях, но хорошо – на архитектуре. Древний город Корчула напоминает и Венецию, и Дубровник одновременно: узкие улицы, готический собор Святого Марка, черепичные крыши и дух Средневековья.
Вскоре выяснилось, что мы – единственные сухопутные крысы на целый остров. Остальные туристы прибывали на яхтах. Вставали на рейде, закупали провизию в мини-маркете, ужинали в конобах. Потом, не отходя от столов, прыгали в шлюпки и, пьяно выписывая по воде кривые, отважно отчаливали в закат.
Вскоре мы тоже тронулись в путь.
Прокат машин на острове оказался всего один. Назывался он «Брум» и состоял из очень маленьких, очень старых машин. Владельцы «Брума» разрисовали их в веселенькие цвета, расписали цветочками и полосами «под зебру», а «Фольксваген» 1960-х годов даже обшили белым мехом, вдохнув в машины новую жизнь. Нам достался «Фиат» кабриолет, помнящий, вероятно, студенческие волнения в Европе, войну во Вьетнаме и визит Брежнева в Белград. Матерчатая крыша складывалась с громким скрежетом, двигатель иногда глох, но крутые подъемы он штурмовал, как горный козел: уверенно и с отвагой.
Вообще-то Млет вытянулся поперек Адриатики всего на 37 км, но с учетом серпантинов – на все 150. Если заруливать в самые интересные места и не брезговать остановками в конобах, путь с одного края острова до другого занимал целый день. За это время на сетчатке отпечатывались залитые светом долины, теряющиеся в синей дымке холмы, сосновые рощи, виноградники и сумасшедшее, бьющее в лицо, вездесущее солнце. К вечеру глаз пропитывался синевой и светом, уши – гулом ветра и криками птиц, кожа – запахом хвои, а сил оставалось только на то, чтобы плюхнуться на стул в конобе и спросить домашнего вина.
В деревне Помена на западной оконечности Млета обнаружились 50 местных жителей и единственный на острове отель «Одиссей» с бассейном, шведским столом и толпами рыхлых туристов. После пустынной Собры он выглядел средоточием цивилизации, поэтому наш «Брум» улепетывал оттуда со всех ног.
За Поменой начинался национальный парк Млет с двумя солеными озерами невероятной синевы и бенедиктинским монастырем XII века на острове в центре одного из озер.
К острову курсировала юркая лодка. Лодочник напевал себе под нос американский хип-хоп. Мы словно оказались в центре гигантской обрамленной зелеными холмами чаши, залитой водой. Чувство возникало молитвенное, как в католическом храме: ты маленький, мир большой, и где- то наверху – Тот, кто создал все, что мы видим вокруг. Ясно, почему здесь построили монастырь.
Столица острова, деревня Бабино-Полье, напоминала зачарованное место. Расположенная на склоне холма, она, кажется, беспробудно спала. Туристы сюда не добирались, машины не тревожили застывший в солнечном мареве воздух, в виноградниках вокруг на глазах набухали темные, почти черные ягоды, и море внизу виделось сквозь полупрозрачную дымку, словно сотканную из печного дыма, винного духа и звона церковных колоколов. За столиками на террасе потягивали ракию несколько стариков. Мы заказали кофе, его принес веселый длинноволосый дед. Обжегся, подул на пальцы, спросил, откуда мы, и радостно вспомнил, как был в Эрмитаже в 1975 году. Кофе был крепким, горьким, словно пропитавшимся запахами кипарисов и пиний. Счет мы не получили: терраса оказалась частным домом, а не кафе.
В Бабино-Полье был единственный на острове газетный киоск. Кроме таблоидов недельной выдержки он предлагал жвачку, печенье, лотерейные билеты и одну лишь книгу: роман автора Lav Nikolajevič Tolstoj под названием Ana Karenjina.
На закате на шоссе по дороге к Собре мы увидели старика. Опершись на посох и картинно поглаживая белую бороду, он сидел в тени фигового дерева как живой памятник писателю Lav Tolstoj. На прилавке перед писателем белели круги домашнего сыра, свешивались гирлянды сушеных смокв. Узнать виды сыров помешал языковой барьер. Убедившись в полном нашем непонимании, старик вздохнул и, показав на сыр слева, громко проблеял. Ткнув пальцем в правый, убедительно замычал. Мы купили оба.
Авторы овечьего сыра нашлись чуть дальше. Освещенные закатным солнцем, они, легко взбираясь по крутому холму, позвякивали колокольчиками и жалобно блеяли: «Мле-е-ет... Мле-е-ет...» Звук метался между горами, и казалось, что вся долина тихонько зовет: «Мле-е-т...»
Мы еще не знали, что, вернувшись в Москву, тоже частенько будем причитать: «На Млет, на Млет...» Всю зиму, до следующего лета.

Had enough of overcrowded beaches? If you're brave enough to get off the beaten track, you'll see a completely different side to Croatia
We've been on board ship for four hours now, but there's still no sign of the island. We sail slowly past inaccessible hills covered in thick, prickly shrubs,
beige cliffs, lonely yachts, bare mountain-tops, yet more cliffs, and yet more islands.
The cast of holiday-makers is gradually changing: the huge Italian families, with their crowds of children, are becoming fewer and farther between. A herd of backpackers comes into view, shuffling over the pebbles. Crowds of tourists, withered and burnt by the sun, crawl off to their chain hotels, children's entertainers, swimming pools and buffets. Their places are taken by the locals, with their dark-as-pitch sun-tans, heavy luggage
and hint of laziness in their eyes. As the ship moors up at yet another island, I manage to make out a pier with a handful of rusty launches, dozens of brick rooftops, a squat bell-tower and a couple of crumpled palm trees. Our ship's arrival is a real event,
and it looks as though the whole island has come down to the harbour. Some well-dressed locals check out the port-holes, children scream and shout, and the waves beat against the shore. A lonely cyclist circles around, completing laps of the paved harbour...
After this stop, we are really going to be in the back of beyond - and for this part of the world, that's saying something. Every other passenger bumps into someone they know, and every third carries a rubber plant or mattress with them. A man with a string-bag full of tomatoes is asleep in the chair next to me, snoring peacefully.
"Are you sure we want to be going somewhere where even tomatoes have to be taken across the water?" my travelling companion comments, mischievously. He's feeling a little scared, no doubt.
Darkness begins to fall. The scarlet, Adriatic dusk blazing right across the horizon is replaced by a blue twilight, and the ferry gives a long blow of its horn, changes course and points its nose out into the open sea. I haven't got the slightest idea where we are or where we're headed. And I'm feeling a little scared, too.
To tell the truth, Croatia is the last place in the world where anyone -
even the most clueless tourist - could get lost. According to
UNESCO this place has the lowest crime rate in Europe, Croatian is so similar to Russian that if you make an effort you can get by without a dictionary, and during the tourist season every stretch of coastline is brimming with people. It was down to this last fact that we set off in the first place.
here are just over 4 million people living in Croatia, but in the summer months, for every member of the population, three more people arrive - with cameras round their necks and inflatable mattresses under their arms.
Trying to find some non-touristy spots in one of the most tourist-friendly countries in the world didn't seem to be an enviable task. But we found a simple solution: we grabbed a map and picked out, at random, one of the 1185 islands that belong to Croatia. We ended up with Mljet. The sum total of what we knew about Mljet was a big fat zero. The tourist forums told us nothing. Lonely Planet called the island "an Adriatic paradise", but did not go into details. As for the Russian guidebook, it had only one thing to say: that Mljet did indeed exist.
...The ferry drew up to the bank when night had well and truly fallen. A few little houses and a tiny cafe could be seen from the deck. Right behind the cafe's tables were the foothills of some mountains covered in dense forest, whilst some dark, empty highways climbed their way up the slopes. The ferry plunged its nose into the bank, and the sailors, yawning, let down the ship's ladder. The few remaining passengers picked up their trunks, jumped ashore and dispersed into the gloom. The harbour once again stood empty, the light in the cafe went out, and silence fell around us like a pillow. The prospect of spending the night on the beach was fast approaching.
Our saviour was a fellow named Branko. Branko and his friend were lazily finishing their beers on the doorstep of the cafe, when I flew into them like a whirlwind, and beseeched them to help find me a taxi and a hotel, with tears in my eyes.
"Where you go, my go," Branko said, quickly taking control of the situation, and struggling to find the right English words. "Come live, come stay night, you live with me, apartments - very cheap, ye-e-s?"
Feeling as though we were in a Tashkent bazaar and in Naples all at the same time, we discovered that Branko was already putting our cases in the boot of a smashed up Fiat, shoving us onto the back seat, waving off our questions about the cost, and tearing off into the night. The village was called Sobra. In the darkness we could see the only street, with the sea along one side and a row of houses along the other.
Branko's apartments turned out to be big holiday cottages on the coast, half of which he rented. Our cottage was spacious, the rooms were cosy, the entrance was separate and the price was ridiculously cheap.
"The beach is over there," Branko said, waving his hand towards the balcony. "The mini-market's there," he added, waving in the same direction. "The konobas (Croatian taverns – ed.) are right behind the mini-market. The first does good meat, and the second does good pizza." 2
He turned and headed for the door.
"What about fish?" I ventured shyly.
"I don't like fish," Branko said, with an embarrassed look, and slammed the door.
In the morning the sun burst in, paying no heed to the shutters. We flung open the windows and the room was bathed in light.
I went out onto the balcony. There was nothing beneath me but the sea - that same surreal shade of turquoise that you normally only see in advertising brochures for tropical islands. The entire village consisted of two rows of stone houses, made white by the sun, and a road which bordered the sea. If you sat down on the roadside you could dangle your legs in the Adriatic and stare off into the horizon.
Strewn around the shore were small, round islands, whilst further away, through the blue haze, the broken line of hills of the Peljesac peninsula could be seen.
Some local men were sitting on a bench on the only street / road, watching the passers-by and looking bored. A woman was brushing wild vine leaves from her balcony, shouting at someone inside the house as she did so. A lorry roared up from below. Its driver stopped to say hello to the men, then to a woman, then to a shopkeeper, and then sat down in the nearest konoba, with every intention, it seemed, of staying put till evening.
The beach turned out to be a small bay in the cliffs with hand-rails heading out into the water, but we had it all to ourselves. The mini-market was a 'selpo'-type place, with buckets, shampoos and yoghurts all lined up together, along with fresh baguettes, cheeses, round, yellow melons, home-made pesto and an impressive collection of Croatian wines.
The konoba's tables were spread along the road on the side
looking out to sea. The list of pizzas on the menu was enough to make any Italian pizzaiolo proud, and there were more dishes in the "Fish" section than there were days available on our holiday.
We discovered a fish stall behind the konobas. In the morning, dirty launches steeped in the aroma of the sea moored themselves to its doors. Silver scales shone in the sunlight, crabs clattered inside a sack, and bearded fishermen exchanged banter. Having put down their rods, they cleaned their teeth and washed, standing amid their catches, or sometimes lying down on the deck and snoozing.
The usual feeling one gets in Croatia of being in a resort was nowhere to be found. The island turned out to be an idyllic rural back-water: full of joie-de-vivre and local colour, with a hint of maritime laziness and a fascinating taste for life.
Behind the fish stall, Sobra came to an end - literally. The road wound slightly further along the cliffs and then disappeared
around a bend. The mountain stood there, a dark-green mass, and the smell of herbs, hot stone and salt hung in the air. The
sea murmured right under Branko's balcony, in the back court stood an orange grove, and hedgehogs came up to the doors by night. We wished we could stay forever.
It soon became apparent that we were the only landlubbers on the island. The other tourists had all arrived on yachts. They got out onto the road, bought some
provisions at the mini-market, then had dinner in one of the konobas. Then, without going beyond the tables, they jumped back into their sloops and, making drunken circles in the water, sailed off into the sunset heroically.
Soon we too set off from the island.
It turned out there was only one car hire site on the island. It was called "Brum" and consisted of very small, very old cars. The owners of "Brum" had painted them in jolly little colours, covering them with flowers and "zebra stripes", and one 1960s Volkswagen had even been given a new lease of life with a covering of white fur. We ended up with a Fiat cabriolet, which was rather reminiscent of student uprisings in Europe, the Vietnam War and Brezhnev's
visit to Belgrade. Its fabric roof folded over with a great screech, and its engine cut out at times, but it took steep ascents by storm, like a mountain goat: confidently and fearlessly.
Mljet stretched a mere 37 km along the Adriatic,
but the winding roads meant that there were 150 km on which to drive. If you headed to the most interesting places and didn't mind making a few stops at the konobas, you could spend a whole day getting from one side of the island to the other. In that time, valleys bathed in light, hills lost in blue smoke, pine groves, vineyards and the insane, ubiquitous sun, which beat down relentlessly on your face, all imprinted themselves on your retina. By evening the eye had gorged itself on light and azure blue, the ear - on the howling wind and the birdsong, and the skin - with the aroma of pines, and all you had the strength left to do was to collapse onto a chair in a konoba and ask for a bottle of house wine.
In the village of Pomena, on Mljet's western extremity, we found 50 locals and the hotel's only hotel, the "Odyssey", which boasted a pool, a buffet and crowds of podgy tourists. Compared to the deserted Sobra, it felt like the centre of civilization, so our "Broom" couldn't wait to get out of there. Beyond Pomena was the Mjlet National Park, with its two incredibly blue salt-water lakes and a 12th century Benedictine monastery on an island in the middle of one of the lakes.
A nimble little boat took us out to the island. The boatman was singing some American hip-hop to himself. We literally found ourselves in the middle of a gigantic cauldron, full of water and with green hills around its edges. The sense of prayer came over us, like in a Catholic church: you feel tiny, the world seems huge, and somewhere up above is He who created all that we see around us. You could see why they had built a monastery here.
The island's capital, the village of Babino-Polje, was liked an enchanted place. Situated on the slope of a hill, you got the feeling it could never be roused from its slumbers. No tourists came here,
no cars polluted the air, which had congealed in the sun's haze; dark, almost black grapes could be seen swelling in the little vineyards all around us, and the sea far below could be seen through the semi-transparent mist, which was like a patchwork formed of chimney smoke, the spirit of wine and the ringing of church bells. Behind some tables on a terrace, a few old men were sweeping up with a broom. We ordered a coffee, and it was brought out to us by a jolly, long-haired chap. He burnt his fingers, blew on his fingers, asked where we were from, and fondly recalled a visit he had made to the Hermitage in 1975. The coffee was strong and bitter, and infused with the aromas of cypresses and pines. We didn't get a bill: the terrace turned out to belong to a private house, rather than a cafe.
Babino-Polje boasted the island's only newspaper stand. Besides a weekly tabloid it also offered chewing-gum, biscuits, lottery tickets and a solitary book: a novel by one Lav Nikolajevič Tolstoj entitled Ana Karenjina.
At dusk, we saw the old man on the road back to Sobra. Leaning on his stick and stroking his white beard like someone in a painting, he was sitting in the shade of a fig tree, like a living memorial to Lav Tolstoj. On a stall set out in front of the writer we could see white rolls of home-made cheese, and garlands of dried figs. The language barrier meant that it was hard to work out which cheeses were on offer. Seeing that we couldn't understand a word, the old man sighed and, pointing to the cheese on the left, let out a loud bleat. Pointing his finger at the cheese on the right, he gave a definite low moo. We bought both of them.
We discovered the creators of the sheep's-milk cheese a little further down the road. Lit up by the setting sun, and easily making their way up a steep hill, they were tinkling their bells and bleating pitifully:
"Meeeh... Mle-e-eh..." The sound rang out between the mountains, and it was as though the valley was gently calling out to us: "Mlje-e-t..."
We were as yet unaware that when we got back to Moscow, it would be a lament that we too would often find ourselves muttering: "To Mjlet, to Mjlet..." ...all winter long, till the following summer.
