You also have the latest open-source software [like LibreOffice] that can do for completely free and without any limitations 99% of what paid software can do. Most people use barely 5 -10% of what Word or Excel can do, so they'll NEVER need the missing 1% anyway.

I still use my very old version of Word for some intricate formatting you don’t get with LibreOffice - but most people don't bother with the level of customising I love to indulge in, so LibreOffice would be a perfect 'free alternative' for them.

I am thinking to do it pro-bono. I was once on 100% invalidity and what i learned is a pensioner is always in need of money.

I am simply opposed to a production or work tool based on a subscription model. With a subscription, you no longer own your tool - you become a "subscriber" and are potentially exposed to all the uncertainties that come with that arrangement.

For instance, while a ProZ membership isn't strictly necessary - I don't mind being a "subscriber" or a "member", but having a TMS or an editing tool is essential for my work. I prefer to have it at my disposal, to own it, even if my tool is 10 years old.

They seem to have weird priorities like a few personal antipathies, while cyber threat actors are maybe testing what it takes to brake through their "security" measures. And not to mention the improperly implemented Cloudflare watchdog that is probably preventing clients from using the site = us from making money...

For the past several months, I’ve been developing LOXIS, a tool born out of the small frustrations I’ve encountered in my work as a translator: scattered instructions, hard-to-navigate reference documents, character limits that are tedious to keep track of...

I wanted easy access to all this information without changing the way I work or giving up my usual CAT tools, such as memoQ.

LOXIS analyses and organises a project’s resources: style guides, character profiles, locations, items, world-building information, reference documents... For each segment, it automatically selects the relevant information and presents it clearly, directly within the translation environment.

LOXIS is not designed to replace translators. Its purpose is to give us better tools and reduce repetitive tasks, whether or not we use AI to translate.

I’m now preparing an initial beta integrated with memoQ, and I’m looking for a few translators willing to test it on real projects. No technical expertise is required: above all, I’m looking for honest feedback on how useful it is in day-to-day work.

I pretty much agree that it doesn’t make much sense to introduce more CAT tools. The market is already more than saturated, and the existing offerings are very comprehensive. Established companies have teams of experienced engineers and offer solid products. They vibe code just as all budding coders. You use Fable 5 or GPT5.6 SOL? So do they.

I wonder how it is possible that OBVIOUS spam threads continue to pass vetting. Are you using AI for this job? What if a really dangerous post gets published, including malicious links (sooner or later this will be the case with this carelessness)?

I read a report about the increase in the number of software offerings on the market, around 30%. But sales figures remain stable. That said, with Vibe Coding, we produce more softwares, but people aren't buying more. That means more productivity and more products don't necessarily lead to more sales...

I believe that the same applies to any other AI output: for instance, more AI-generated content does not mean that readers are reading more. Nor does it bring in more readers.

Ultimately, what is the point of all this AI-driven productivity growth if people don't buy/read more?

I've just finished yesterday my first ProBono work - 9000 words of subtitles translation for a certain project/documentary.
My doubt is:

Work done through ProBono, being voluntary, and with humanitary purposes, can I add it to my Portfolio?

I don't want to infringe any rules.

Also, when text-translations via ProBono are made, can they be used as translation samples in order to improve our certified pro application?

You are telling a 4-year-old about love and sex, and the only idea in his head is that a girl is going to see his dick, which terrifies him. Only developers with humanitarian background, like Yves Champollion or the MemoQ team can overcome this "Programmer's Plague", the rest fall victims to it. (Not sure about CafeTran, we'll see it soon).

@Samuel - OK, I stand corrected, however my main point is to kill as many automatic One Drive processes as you can. As I said - it's a tedious manual process (default "save" locations etc.). The main point is - stop One Drive from Syncing anything. Then work from there.

Not if the file in the cloud is in a folder that is not being synced. The first thing you must do is turn off everything in the One Drive "Back up folders on this PC" dialog. Then turn off One Drive from your Settings -> Apps -> Startup. Then work from there.

I believe this is exactly the point the OP was trying to make. The issue is not Gmail itself. Many legitimate professionals use Gmail addresses.
The concern arises when someone claims to be the Founder & CEO of an established company but contacts you through a generic email address unrelated to the company’s official domain.

In that context, it becomes a red flag because it does not match the professional identity the person is claiming to represent.
Of course, a Gmail address alone does not prove that someone is a scammer, but combined with other warning signs (fake payment confirmations, Telegram communication, requests for upfront fees, etc.), it is a relevant element to consider.
A red flag I personally pay attention to is when people introduce themselves as “Mr”, “Mrs” or “Dr” in unsolicited business emails.
This alone is not proof of anything, but combined with generic wording, exaggerated compliments and a lack of a verifiable corporate identity, it often matches patterns I have seen in scam attempts.
The use of a Gmail address, particularly one containing random numbers, is another red flag in this specific context. It is not because Gmail itself is suspicious, but because someone claiming to represent an established company would normally be expected to use a professional email address linked to that company’s domain.
These are the types of messages I have increasingly been seeing in my inbox lately, and they are immediately deleted.
