Source text - English In a robust meta-analysis of 8 head to head randomised controlled trials (N=1610) conducted to date comparing prostaglandin analogues, bimatoprost 0.03% (LUMIGAN®) currently available, showed greater ability to reduce IOP than either latanoprost or travoprost (Aptel et al 2008)
However that same meta-analysis also demonstrated relative equivalence of the incidence of hyperaemia of bimatoprost 0.03% (up to 51%) and travoprost (up to 53%) while bimatoprost 0.03% demonstrated approximately 15% more reported hyperaemia than latanoprost (up to 36%)
Ocular adverse events are recognized as a barrier to some patients’ overall adherence to treatment
New formulation of bimatoprost 0.01% (LUMIGAN® 0.01%) has been developed to improve overall ocular tolerability without compromising the overall greater ability to reduce IOP of bimatoprost 0.03%
IOP lowering by bimatoprost 0.01% and bimatoprost 0.03% were compared over a 48-week period during which IOP was assessed at 0, 4 and 8 hours post dose at weeks 2 and 6, and months 3, 6, 9 and 12.
At 95% confidence interval, the mean difference in IOP was within ± 1.5 mmHg at all time points and within ± 1.0 mmHg at 9 out of 17 time points between bimatoprost 0.01% and 0.03%
