Hainan Welcomes You
China’s only tropical island province is China’s most popular tropical seaside resort. Fresh air, plenty of sunshine, clean clear water, and no winter you can always enjoy the “Healthy Sunshine Island”. The Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization praised Hainan by saying that “Hainan is a paradise on earth, a joy to the Chinese people, and the pearl of all mankind.”
In the 22 years since Hainan became a Special Economic Zone the tourism industry has undergone considerable development and become a major part of the national economy. Relying on the unique ecological tourism resources and superior geographic advantages particular to Hainan Island the local government has worked towards building up a strong tourism infrastructure capable of sustained economic growth and the creation of an international holiday-oriented brand-oriented island. Golf, spa, sports, and Chinese medicinal therapy are among Hainan’s most famous products at home and abroad.
With the goal of gradually building the infrastructure to a highly internationalized level Hainan is currently working towards becoming an International Tourism Island. We believe that the beautiful ecological environment and cultural charm of this unique area will lead to the investment of time and money by domestic and foreign talent. The “Reform and Opening Up” strategy which brought China onto the international scene in the 1980s will bring Hainan onto the international scene in the early 2010s.
Sun island; vacation paradise.
We welcome you.

Fun on Hainan Island
Introduction to Hainan
Idyllic Ocean Island, Special Economic Zone, Vacation Paradise
What do Bali, Fiji, the Maldives, Miami, Hawaii, Phuket and Hainan Island all have in common?
Don’t know? Look at a map.
They’re all located at 18° north latitude. In terms of weather and ecology this is the perfect location for a tropical resort. Known throughout China and Asia as the “eco-island” Hainan has a first class natural environment with oceans, wildlife, plant life, mineral and tourism resources. Four seasons of spring like weather contribute to the forest coverage rate of more than 58%.
“阳光” Sun, “海水” Sea, “沙滩” Beach, “空气” Fresh Air, and “绿色” a Green Environment are the five necessary factors that make this unique tropical island into an ideal vacation paradise or home.
Hainan is that and so much more. It’s also the “sun island,” “healthy island,” “romantic honeymoon island,” “sports island” and China’s “International Tourism Island.”
Geography:
Hainan Province, also known as “琼” or the “Jade Island” is located on the southernmost tip of China. The province includes the main island, the Zhongsha (中沙) and Xisha (西沙) Islands, the Spratly Archipelago (南沙群岛) and the territorial waters surrounding these islands. With the largest ocean area (210 million square kilometers) and the smallest land area (3.4 million square kilometers), Hainan is both China’s largest and smallest province. Taiwan is the only Chinese island larger than Hainan. The provincial capital, Haikou, is located at the north end of the island.
Climate and Temperature:
Hainan has a tropical monsoon climate, fresh air, plenty of sunshine, abundant vegetation, long summers, and no winters of which to speak. The “sunshine island” gets approximately 300 days of sunshine per year. The mountainous center of the island has the lowest temperatures while the southwestern portion of the island reaches an average annual high of 23.8 ℃. January’s average temperature is 17.2℃. July’s average temperature is 28.4℃.
Population and Ethnic Groups:
Thirty seven distinct ethnic groups call Hainan home with the Han (汉), Hui (回), Li (黎), and Miao or Hmong (苗) having the largest populations. The total population of Hainan is 8.5 million - 1.4 million of which are ethnic minorities. With 1.1 million Li resident on Hainan Island the province is famous in China as a Li Minority region. Hainan is also well known for its high population of returned Overseas Chinese (more than 1 million).
Natural Resources:
Hainan’s abundant natural resources make her rich. Agricultural products grown on Hainan included bananas, binlang (or betel nut), coconuts, litchi, longan, mangoes and many other varieties of tropical fruit. With large tracts of tropical rainforest still undamaged by man Hainan boasts a forest coverage rate of 58% or more. There are over 4000 types of plants native to the island of which 630 are uniquely Hainanese. The coastline stretches 1528 kilometers with sixty eight natural harbors. More than 800 different kinds of sea life are found in the waters around Hainan. There are fifty nine different kinds of minerals found on Hainan, thirty six of which are both valuable and found in large enough quantities to mine. The coastal waters are rich in oil and natural gas of which it is estimated more than 700 billion cubic meters of the 1040 billion cubic meters will be extractable.
Economy:
Relying on its unique natural environment Hainan’s economy focuses primarily on tourism, real estate and tropical agriculture. In recent years real estate (especially winter properties) has shown rapid development and booming sales. Tropical fruits, seafood, and other agricultural products sell well on both the domestic and international markets. The current economy is primarily tourism based as rapid growth in this sector has produced a system capable of providing all the necessary requirements for tourist reception and service. The tourist economy of Hainan is built around five important factors: “吃” Food, “住” Housing, “行” Transportation, “游” Travel, “购” Shopping, and “娱” Entertainment. The current annual capacity is twenty five million visitors per year.
Today Hainan is trying to build itself into a world class International Tourism Island.
Hainan Resort Commodities
Green Ocean, Blue Passion, Marine Leisure
When God created the Heavens and the Earth he was kind to Hainan Island giving it a beautiful sea environment – sometimes wild, sometimes calm. God gave Hainan so many different colors of green and blue, a white sandy beach, a multicolored undersea world, over 1500 kilometers of coastline, and 200 million square kilometers of sea. Hainan was made into an island paradise perfect for marine sports and marine leisure.
Sports
Chinese and foreign visitors alike love the ocean and ocean sports. Ocean sports currently available in Hainan include diving, sailing, windsurfing, yachting, surfing jet skiing, beach volleyball, and beach soccer.
Beach Volleyball
Since October 2002 the Chinese national beach volleyball team has trained in Sanya. Starting in 2007 a permanent training base was built at Sanya Bay specifically for the use of the national team. In 2008 Sanya hosted a world-class Beach Volleyball competition.
Diving
Among the many ocean sports available in Hainan, diving is hot, hot, hot! If you want to dive in China, Sanya is currently the best place to go. At present there are five diving bases located in and around Sanya: Dadonghai 18° Ocean International Diving Club, West Island (西岛), Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛), Yalong Bay (亚龙湾), and Xiaodonghai (小东海). The water here is clear with visibility ranging from 8-16 meters (and in some places up to 25 meters). The environment attracts a splendid variety of colorful tropical fish. International diving experts agree that Sanya provides some of the best diving available in the South Pacific.
With an ever increasing number of tourists coming to Sanya to dive, many international diving schools provide diving instructors and/or have set up training centers and training courses in Sanya. These include ADS (the world's diving Coalition of Essential Schools), CMAS (World Water Sports Union), NAUI (International Diving Coaches Association), PADI (Professional Association of International Diving Coach), and SSI (Scuba Diving International School) among others.
Dadonghai Ocean Diving (大东海潜海潜水) Dàdōnghăi Qiánhăi Qiánshuĭ
Because of its rich tropical vegetation, wide variety of coral, and colorful tropical fish population the base at Dadonghai is one of China’s best known for diving. The year round water temperature is 20℃ or above.
West Island Ocean Diving (西岛潜海潜水) Xīdăo Qiánhăi Qiánshuĭ
West Island (also known as Turtle Island) is located in the Sanya Nature Reserve. The ocean around West Island is generally free from pollution and the water is exceptionally clear. The waters west of the island are a tourist diving area with imported diving equipment and more than thirty certified diving instructors.
Wuzhizhou Island Diving (蜈支洲岛潜水) Wúzhīzhōudăo Qiánshuĭ
Hainan’s most famous dive center must be the “Chinese Maldives” at Wuzhizhou Island. With underwater visibility of up to 27 meters, superior customer service, diving and snorkeling equipment, this is easily the best place to go swim and play and dive.
Yalong Bay Diving (亚龙湾海岸潜水) Yàlóngwān Hăi’àn Qiánshuĭ
Diving at Yalong Bay generally takes place at either the East or West Pai Islands. The sea water here is clear and clean with high visibility levels. There is a wide variety of hard coral and tropical fish to be seen here.
Jet Skiing
Jet skis can be found for rent at most nearly all seacoast resort hotels, Boundary Islet, West Island, Yalong Bay, Dadonghai, and other locations around Hainan.
Sailing and Windsurfing
The China General Administration of Sport National Sailing Base was built in Haikou 1984 and has been the main location for winter training camps for local, provincial, and national level sailing teams and the Chinese Sailing Championship Cup ever since.
Surfing
Hainan Island’s southeastern coast is dotted with a number of bays that provide great surf. These include: Clearwater Bay, Shimei Bay, Sun and Moon Bay, and Nanyan Bay. Although the surf scene in Hainan is no Hawaii waves can get up to four meters in height making the island suitable for surfing for the six months from October to April. The surf might not be perfect but the combination of surf and scenery makes it a surfer’s paradise.
Other Forms of Entertainment
Banana boats, deep sea fishing, night fishing, paragliding, platform fishing, ‘round the island yacht cruises, shore fishing, and underwater photography, are but a few of the other options available to tourists visiting Hainan.
Yachting
As China’s economic situation improves, yachting has become one of the newest emerging leisure consumer products in China. Haikou, Sanya, and Lingshui are currently in the process of constructing large scale international tourist resort areas featuring marinas and yacht clubs. The Clearwater Bay Yacht Club, Haikou Mayard Yacht Club, Mountain Peninsula Yacht Club, Prosperity Bay Yacht Club, Sanya Hong Zhou International Yacht Club, and Sanya Bay New City Yacht Club are but a few of the ones already built or currently under construction. As these facilities come online and are gradually put into use it is expected that yachting culture in Hainan will take off!
Cruises
The cruise ship industry in Sanya has increased rapidly in the past few years. Sanya is now the top Chinese port-of-call for cruise ships. Sanya boasts the first 100,000 ton cruise ship berth (located at the Phoenix Island International Cruise Ship Terminal) and the condition of the port at Sanya is constantly improving. Carnival and Royal Caribbean, the world’s foremost cruise lines, have already opened routes to Sanya. These are as follows: Hong Kong → Sanya → Halong Bay (Vietnam), Hong Kong → Singapore → Malaysia → Indonesia → Thailand, and Halong Bay → Sanya. International cruise traffic has been increasing rapidly with over ninety nine departures already scheduled per year. Sanya’s Phoenix Island International Cruise Ship Terminal currently has the largest number of international cruise ship departures per year of any port in China. Per year there are over one hundred thousand visitors from the US, France, England, and domestic locations who arrive and depart Sanya by sea.
Hainan is well on its way to being a high-end cruise ship vacation destination.
Cruise Ship Terminal:
Phoenix Island International Cruise Ship Terminal (三亚凤凰岛国际邮轮港) Sānyà Fènghuángdăo Guójì Yóulún Găng
Phoenix Island, an artificial island built 400 meters out into Sanya Bay, covers an area of nearly forty hectares. There are plans in the work for 50,000, 100,000 and 250,000 ton berths. One 100,000 ton berth has already been completed. This is China’s most complete cruise ship port. With investment of 100 billion renminbi the three terminals will be fully complete and in operation by 2014. Cruises leaving from Phoenix Island will go to Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Russia and Southeast Asia. It will be one of the world’s largest international cruise centers.
Yacht Clubs:
Hong Zhou International Yacht Club (三亚鸿洲国际游艇会) Sānyà Hóngzhōu Guójì Yóutĭng Huì
Sanya’s pleasant year round weather makes it especially suitable for boating. With a Bellingham style private pier and seventy two berths capable of holding boats up to 36 meters in length the Sanya Hong Zhou International Yacht Club is the only international standard private pier in Hainan. Located inside the harbor at the foot Deer Looking Back Mountain the Hong Zhou International Yacht Club facilities are easily able to withstand force 12 typhoons.
Noble Yacht Club (海口贵族游艇会) Hăikŏu Guìzú Yóutĭng Huì
Comfortable and luxurious at the same time, Haikou Noble Yacht Club was the first such yacht club built to international five-star standards in China. It has luxury villas, luxury suites, hotel rooms, meeting rooms, recreational facilities, hot springs, and (of course) yachts.
Seaside Resorts:
Lie on the beach. Close your eyes. Listen to the waves. Feel the warm sunshine on your skin. Take a leisurely dip in the swimming pool. Soak in the hot springs. Facials and massage at the spa. Enjoy the tranquility. Does life get any better than this?
Hainan’s unique location and geographical features have caused it to be chosen by numerous world-renowned design companies and top-ranking hotel management groups for their resort hotels. As a result the indolent lifestyle described above is within easy reach at Hainan’s many luxury resorts.
There are now nineteen international quality star rated resorts located in Sanya’s Yalong Bay Tourism Resort District. There are eighteen 5-star resort hotels planned for Crabapple Bay. The three bays on Lingshui’s Pearl Coast will eventually have over twenty five 5-star resort hotels. In 2010 Hainan will already have thirty six 5-star resort hotels in operation. More than twenty one of these resorts are located in and around Sanya City making it China’s “5-Star Resort City”.

Ideal Vacation Home:
The astonishingly beautiful natural environment coupled with clean air and balmy tropical breezes year round promises that the market for vacation property will continue to develop apace. More and more mainlanders and foreigners alike are coming to discover that Hainan Island is the perfect place to buy a second home.
In October 2009 Luneng Real Estate Investment Development Group began the Luneng City development project. The Luneng City project along with the Sanya Bay New City, Haikou Lanfuyuan, Haikou Peach Flower, and the second and third stages of Blue Sea Coconut Breeze real estate projects are unprecedented in the last sixteen years of development in Hainan Province. With 9 kilometers of coastline, Sanya Bay’s newest development area will cover an area of 6.8 square kilometers. Difficult as it may be to believe, that’s larger than the Guangzhou Pearl River New City CBD! Taken together, the luxurious Shanhaitian in Sanya’s Dadonghai and Haikou’s Lanfuyuan mean that Luneng Real Estate Investment Development Group has already completed construction on 19 square kilometers of property on Hainan Island.
Luneng Real Estate Investment Development Group’s major projects in Haikou and Sanya are not the only large sale real estate development projects currently underway in Hainan. In March 2009 the joint venture Clearwater Bay development project with a ten year development cycle and a development area of up to 900 million m2 of property was started. When this development is finished it will truly be possible to call Hainan an “International Tourism Island.”
The Cantonese R&F Properties real estate development company has also been investing heavily in the Hainan market. Since 2008 when the People’s Government of Lingshui County approved the creation and development of the three “Pearl Coast” bays R&F has begun work on developing Perfume Bay (香水湾) and Prosperity Bay (富丽湾). With more than thirteen major companies participating in Perfume Bay alone, there has already been more than 1.5 billion renminbi invested in the Pearl Coast projects.
Truly it is now possible to say that Hainan Island’s development is in full swing!
Dream of Beauty
As China's only tropical island, Hainan Island not only has the vast expanse of sky, clear water, soft sand, and the shade of swaying coconut palms it also has many historical and cultural sites of interest.
History
The history of human settlement on Hainan Island can be traced as far back as the late Paleolithic and early Neolithic periods. Remains over 10,000 years in age have been found at the Luobi Caves (落笔洞) in Sanya County and these continue to be the earliest traces found so far. The Zhuya Prefecture was set up during the early part of the Western Han Dynasty and remained a political entity throughout the Three States Period and Jin Dynasty at which point it became known as Zhuya Province. During the Tang Dynasty administration of the island was divided into the Yazhou and Danzhen Prefectures. These would later become known first as Qiongshan Prefecture and then Qiongzhou. Hainan remained known as Qiongzhou up through the Qing Dynasty and early Republican era at which point it was made a special administrative region of Guangdong Province. The Hainan Special Executive Office was established in April 1949 and the island was completely liberated and unified on May 1st,1950. Thirty four years later the People’s Congress and People’s Government of the Hainan Administrative Region were formally established eventually leading to the creation of Hainan Provincial People’s Government, the new province of Hainan, and China’s largest special economic region in April of 1988.
Historical Sites of Interest:
Ancestral Home of the Soong Family (宋氏祖居) Sòng Shì Zŭjū
The Soong Family originally came from Changsa Town in Wenchang County on the northeastern side of Hainan Island. At the museum here one can see revolutionary era artifacts, pictures from the childhood of Soong Ching-ling (宋庆龄) and her famous sisters, historical materials, photographs, charts, paintings and reproductions.
Dongpo Academy (东坡书院) Dōngpō Shūyuàn
Located in Danzhou County in the northwest part of Hainan Island the Dongpo Academy was originally known as the Daijiu Academy (载酒堂) but the name was changed over 900 years ago to honor the famous author SU Dongpo (苏东坡) when he was exiled to Danzhou for a three year period during the Song Dynasty. Before reaching its present form the Dongpo Academy was been expanded upon and repaired many times during its long history. It is now one of China’s National Key Cultural Relic Sites.
Five Officials Temple (五公祠) Wŭgōng Cí
Five Officials Temple is a welcome spot of peace and tranquility about five kilometers from downtown Haikou. Still well inside the city limits this temple is made up of a number of buildings and outbuildings including the Five Spirits’ House (五公精舍), the Studying Hall (学圃堂), the Sugong Memorial Temple (苏公祠), the Crop Watching Hall (观稼堂), the Eastern (东斋) and Western Halls (西斋), the Grain Spring (浮粟泉), the Wine Pouring Hall (洞酌亭) and a newly built exhibition hall.
Hainan Provincial Museum (海南省博物馆) Hăinán Shĕng Bówùguăn
The Hainan Provincial Museum is located in Haikou at #68 Guoxing Boulevard. There are 10 exhibition halls located in the museum. Permanent exhibits include those dealing with Hainan’s history, the native culture of Hainan’s ethnic minorities, the traditional lifestyle of the ancient Hainanese people, and over 1000 valuable cultural relics including a porcelain Tang Dynasty horse with three color glaze, a Yuan Dynasty sword, and Song dynasty pottery. Well worth a visit.
Hairui’s Tomb (海瑞墓) Hăiruì Mù
Xiuying District’s Binya Village in the southwestern part of Haikou City is home to the tomb and memorial of Hairui, an upright official of the late Ming Dynasty who was banished to Hainan in the 16th century. The complex features a number of delightful buildings and pieces of period statuary made from local volcanic stone. The center of the complex, of course, is the tomb which is about 4 meters tall.
Memorial Statue Commemorating the Red Brigade of Women (红色娘子军雕像) Hóngsè Niángzijūn Diāoxiàng
This 6.8 meter tall statue in the very center of Qionghai City commemorates the bravery of the “Women’s Army” (also called the Red Brigade of Women and the central topic of the famous Chinese ballet). On May 1st, 1931 the Women’s Army was formed. They consistently distinguished themselves with bravery and their revolutionary exploits served to mobilize the masses into fighting for their liberation.
Old Haikou (骑楼老街) Qílóu Lăojiē
These two and three story buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century used to be the center of downtown Haikou. While Shengsha Road (胜沙路), South Xinhua Road (新华南路), Zhongshan Road (中山路), Bo’ai Road (博爱路)and Jiefang Road (解放路) are no longer the cultural and economic center of the city they still retain more than a shadow of their former glory. Built in a style familiar across southeastern Asia and parts of southern Europe these buildings are an intriguing blend of East and West. This area was named a National Level Historical Street in June of 2009 and since that time has been the focus of an extensive restoration project.
Old Yazhou City (崖州古城) Yázhōu Gŭchéng
You will find the Tang Dynasty remains of old Yazhou City in what is now called Yacheng Town in the northwestern part of Sanya County (about 40km from Sanya City). The South Gate of the city has been repaired to look as it once was but the rest of the remains are authentic.
The Site of the First Hainan Communist Party Congress (琼崖“一大”旧址) Qióngyá Yīdà Jiùzhĭ
Look for the narrow Zhulin Alley on the north side of West Jiefang Road for a monumental piece of Chinese and Hainanese history. In this small (barely 20002m) courtyard house the first Hainan Communist Party Congress was held in 1920.
Wenchang Confucius Temple (文昌孔庙) Wénchāng Kŏngmiào
Established during the Northern Song Dynasty, the Wenchang Confucius Temple has a total area of 33002m. The entrance to the temple features a statue of Confucius as teacher while the inside of the temple has numerous shrines and ceremonial vessels. This temple is an especially unique tourist attraction as it is perhaps the most complete ancient building complex in southern China. Called Hainan’s “First Temple” it is a Provincial-Level Key Cultural relic Site.
Xiuying Battery (秀英古炮台) Xiùyīng Gŭ Pàotái
Just as modern Hainan is home to many naval bases so too was the Hainan of yesteryear. Sandwiched between Haixiu Road and Jinmao in the Xiuying part of Haikou City one will find a Qing period military base that along with Humen Battery (虎门炮台) in Guangdong, Wusong Battery (吴淞炮台) in Shanghai, and Dagu Battery (大沽炮台) in Tianjin was once a major part of China’s land/sea defense structure.
End of the Earth (天涯海角) Tiānyá Hăijiăo
Located in Tianya Town (天涯镇) at the west of Sanya County, the so called “End of the Earth” is a series of stones which were carved with Chinese calligraphy during November of the fifty third year of the Qing Emperor Kangxi (康熙). In the 300 years since then these rocks have become famous all over China.

Rural Tourism
Whether it’s because of climate, landscape, lifestyle, or farming practices, the villages of Hainan are quite different from those of Mainland China. At present there are more than 30 villages across the island that are specifically carrying out rural tourism projects. The goal set forth by these village communities is to preserve their rural lifestyle while also improving the local quality of life. Whether it be a tour of Chengmai County’s coffee growing villages or an eco-friendly hike in the mountains directly south of Haikou City the village tours will allow you to see the many varied folk customs and pastoral scenery of Hainan Province.
Primary Rural Tourism Routes:
With fishing communities, farm communities, and volcanic mountains there are primarily three different kinds of rural tourism in the vicinity of Haikou City.
West Route – The main attraction here is the rural villages of the Shishan volcano cluster. Villages include ancient Shishan Town (石山古镇), Rongtang Village (荣堂村), and Rujia Village (儒豪村). The scenery is best appreciated either on foot or by bicycle. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and well fitting clothing.
South Route – Enjoy the simple life in the villages of Haikou County’s Qiongshan District. For a mere 15rmb you can rent a pole and tackle and go fishing at Longlin Village (龙鳞村) or bird-watching at Tianxin Village (田心村)–also called Egret Heaven for the tens of thousands of birds that come to roost every April.
East Route – The attraction of these ocean fishing villages is immediately obvious upon arrival. One can take a boat around the Dongzhaigang Mangrove Forest (东寨港红树林区) before visiting the “Civilized Villages” of Yanfeng (演丰文明生态村乡). Extreme care has been taken at Yanfeng to make the area as pleasant as possible with carved wood street signs indicating the way to old style residences which have been consistently inhabited by generations of the same family. As the area is still lived in one has the opportunity to see fishing equipment both modern and antique.
Great Golf
Because of Hainan’s pleasant weather and unique environment, golf tourism on Hainan Island can be said to be in “full swing”. The climate is good, the environment is good, the courses are good, the landscape is good … mere words cannot serve to describe the charm of Hainan’s relatively inexpensive greens coupled with tropical scenery, hot springs, and delicious food. It’s difficult to resist the temptation. But, then again, why should you resist?
Most of the 21 already completed golf courses on Hainan are located on the eastern side of the island. Golf courses range from hilly terrain to lake view, seaside, suburban, and urban. There’s even a set of links built across a series of small islands. Tropical Rainforest – Natural Oxygen Bar
The wide variety of tropical rainforest found on Hainan Island is the best preserved tropical rainforest ecosystem in all of China. At present Bawangling, Diaoluoshan, Jianfengling, and Wuzhishan have been named tropical rainforest protection areas and National Forest Parks.
Hainan’s tropical rainforest feature a huge number of forest tree and vine species, many of which are not found outside of Southeast Asia.
Major Tropical Rainforest Areas:
Cruel Mountain (霸王岭) Bàwánglĭng
Spreading across parts of Baisha, Changjiang, and Dongfang Counties this area of nearly 120,000 hectares is almost entirely covered by forest. The forest here is typical of Hainanese tropical rainforest with a mild climate, abundant rainfall, numerous plant and animal species, and a high level of ecosystem integrity. Over 2500 distinct varieties of plants and animals have been categorized as living with the forest including the extremely endangered Hainan Black Crested Gibbon (Hylobates concolor) – only 19 are known to live in the wild. Bawangling is also home to the Chinese Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus), Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), and Sambar (Cervus unicolor).
Diaoluoshan (吊罗山) Diàoluóshān
This is one of the six areas in Hainan Province that still has virgin tropical rainforest. Spread across parts of Baoting, Lingshui, and Qiongzhong Counties the park covers an area of just under 18,400 hectares and is one both one of the largest nature reserves in China and a typical example of the rainforests native to southeastern Asia. The Cyatheacea trees (Alsophila spinulosa (Hook.) Tryon) found here are but one example of the many precious and endangered plants and animals found in this park.
Five Finger Mountain (五指山) Wŭzhĭshān
With a total area of slightly more than 13,600 hectares, Five Finger Mountain Nature Reserve (五指山自然保护区) is not the largest nature reserve on Hainan Island but, owing to it’s proximity to Wuzhishan Mountain it is one of the most famous. It is located between Wuzhishan and Qiongzhong Counties in central Hainan. The Wanquan (万泉河) and Changhua (昌化江) Rivers’ headwaters are located inside the nature reserve. Of the more than 400 types of plants flourishing here nearly 30 of them have recognized medicinal value and better than 60 of them have been accorded first or second level national protection status.
The Chicken Feather Pine (Podocarpus imbricatus pine), Hainan Five Needled Pine (Pinus fenzeliana), Hainanese Masson’s Pine (Pinus massoniana var. hainanensis) and Luohan Pine (Podocarpus annamiensis N.E. Gray) are but a few of the rare plants that can

Chapter 4 – Market Analysis
1. Present and Future: Coastal Resort Tourism Trends on the International Tourist Island
Status of Tourism in Hainan: in 2008 Hainan Island received a total of 20.6 million domestic and foreign tourist trips. This was an increase of 10%. The province’s total income from tourism totals 18.5 billion Renminbi (an increase of 8%) and has become China’s most important holiday destination for coastal tourism.
Goal of Becoming an International Tourist Island: By 2020 Hainan will have become China’s largest ocean maritime tourism center, the largest base for water sports, and a world-class marine tourism and leisure resort. For Chinese and foreign visitors alike it will be a shopper’s dream come true and a holiday paradise.
Chinese Tourism Market Trends: By 2015, China will have become the world’s largest domestic tourism market and will be the fourth largest source of international tourists.
2. Analysis of High-End Resort Hotels in Hainan
With regards to average occupancy rate and prices Sanya’s Yalong Bay Five Star Resort Area is a reference target for Shimei Bay Resort
In 2007 Yalong Bay’s five-star hotel’s had an occupancy rate of 63.5%. Sheraton and Hilton both had over 70% occupancy rates. This allows us to see that the market will support more high end hotels.
Yalong Bay’s hotel prices have shown year-on-year growth in average house prices. In 2007 they reached an average of 1109 renminbi per night with international brands like Sheraton and Hilton respectively averaging 1585 renminbi a night and 1309 renminbi a night.
Conclusion
1. The results of the average occupancy rate and average room price analysis show that there is a huge market in high-end resort hotels in Hainan and that the potential for further consumer demand for high quality tourist resorts is high.
2. The analysis of average room price shows that visitors are able to accept high prices and that as the Bay Area matures there will be opportunities for further tourism resort development.

Like so many people I came to China to teach English for a year after college and before graduate school. Seventeen years later, I still haven't gone to graduate school but the small translation company which I somehow found myself owning has offices in three cities.
I primarily translate tourism related materials followed by the sort of corporate back-end texts that hardly anyone ever sees but which must be done to a very high standard. More notable end clients in these fields have included CTrip and Alibaba's Ant Financial.
I prefer to translate things that I actually want to read. I will take massive pay cuts for the privilege of being allowed to translate things that are both difficult and interesting. Some of my better jobs over the years have included declassified materials for the Cold War International History Project at the Woodrow Wilson Library and books for the China Foreign Languages Press on topics ranging from economic development post Reform & Opening Up to the status of handicapped individuals.
