Su origen habría que buscarlo en la antigua ciudad romana que se levantaba en los alrededores de la Colegiata de Nuestra Señora del Manzano; con el tiempo esta ubicación se abandonó para ocupar las laderas del castillo en busca de la protección que éste brindaba, pasando a ocupar las zonas más bajas al albur del Camino cuando la ruta se trasladó hasta aquí por influencia real.
